Good morning! I’m back to sipping the hazelnut coffee. I do enjoy the coconut flavor as a change but it is so nice to be back to my true love. It has been a crazy week with a lot of good business. The heat has been hindering at times but the plants love it. I feel bad for the victims of the floods and having been a camp counselor in my past I relate. A time meant to be a fun memory becoming a nightmare. The 4th of July Celebration is great as I do love and appreciate where we all live and call home. I use to enjoy fireworks as a child and young adult so I try to be understanding. But my reality now is having one dog who fears the loud noise. Once they start sometimes before the sun goes down my furry boy Finn is done going outside. He is restless in bed with several nights the huge BOOMS going until the wee hours. That also means him wanting to get up really early to go potty. So I’m up late and rising too early. I don’t love fireworks like I once did. Snakes, sparklers, jumping jacks, M-80’s, Roman Candles and more have been replaced by major explosives. I got out of the game with all my fingers, toes and both eyes so I’m good.
Harsens Island Revenge
Currently we are in a holding pattern with Harsens Island Revenge to see if theaters will give us dates. We just finished a run at the Wells Flame and are ready for more. We are still waiting on dates from Emagine and Fridley who ran SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA. We might start planning some dinner and viewings that a few places offered but we wanted audiences to see it on the big screen first. We know 10/6/2025 will be our home video release on DVD and buy/rent streaming services.
We received word from the Red Letter Awards that I talked about last week saying that in the last category of Best Supporting Actor we had two nominations. I received a nod for playing WW1 veteran Axel and Dean Teaster for playing ruthless Abe Axler. Those two characters are polar opposites and even have a run in at the climax of the film. I think Axel was a cool cat and I loved the role and he was an extreme version of myself. As for Dean his role was way outside of his true personality and add in the accent. I would love to see Dean win for the role but I have no control over that. Matter of fact you can just run down our cast list for people I believe could have been nominated for Best Actors or Actress but I am biased. I love the Best Film nomination because it reflects on everyone. Any selfishly I do hope to win Best Writer as it is something I truly love. I even had talks this past week about agent or management representation for literary. I would love to sell off a property a year.
Wild Faith Christmas
Now that the holiday is about over director Shane Hagedorn will be getting together with Dennis Therrian for last listens on music and sound design. The VFX are being dropped in and we are working on end credits. This film will be wrapping up soon and we’ll start to work on the theatrical placement for the run up to the holidays. For those eagerly waiting theatrically will be the only way to see it this holiday season. 2026 will have the film releasing to home video with the theatrical window running into 2026. Again if you have not seen the first one join the tens of millions who have and meet some of the characters in advance. I’m excited for a listen through that will be forthcoming.
ROM COMS MUST DIE – Monday we have a studio watch through to do last looks on the edit, color, VFX and sound design. Once we lock it up we’ll prep it to move over to Dennis Therrian’s studio for music and mixing. This film is just straight up fun and pokes fun at ourselves as filmmakers, actors and artists. I think the goal here will be to do a premiere in Oct. maybe even an event at the McGraw studio or in a theater. After we’ll run it in theaters for 2026 and end with a fall 2026 release to home video. We might do some horror fest showcases in-between.
SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA – Many have been stopping at one of the ad-based video on demand sites like Encourage TV, Roku, Xumo, Tubi, etc…to watch this WW2 home front drama. I did a watch on the 7/1/25 the release date and it was pure joy to watch this story again. This was directed by Anthony Hornus who we are about to talk about in development. Yes. He is getting back into the director’s chair to tell a very unique and timely story.
DEVELOPMENT:
THE SECRET OF THE KINGDOM CHIP – While this film stands on its own it also falls into a story that fits after The Quest Trilogy. For those unaware of the trilogy they are biblical adventures told with a Star Wars-like vision. Good vs Evil and the Heroes Journey play into the three films FORTY NIGHTS, CHASING THE STAR and The Christ Slayer. I really thought that I had put on the robe for the last time as I’m not funded on the level to tell of the return of J.C.. But this story pulled from the news and given a SciFi (For now) spin is a great follow up. The film has been hailed by several readers as the very best of my scripts. I’m not sure on that but I’ll take it since most all the others have been recognized for the script and/or film itself. I always say that the script is not just a box on a check list of development it is EVERYTHING. We are still in talks over the last few pieces of the funding but the finish line is in sight. We are almost done with the casting save a few that we will be doing some reads for. We have the development crew in place and the schedule is being worked on. We’ve landed on our locations and I’m very excited about the shoot end of September.
Misc. Development-
We have a handful of other film projects that are coming together. That can include script, rough schedule, concept art, budgets and such. I will be following up on more of these projects as we get others out the door. I will say that I did over the weekend start work on a highly anticipated sequel script. I’m in no rush but if it comes out how I imagine it will be very powerful. A hint can be found in a short video segment I posted this weekend. I even put a little Metallica music behind the clip for fun.
WRAP UP:
I see almost daily of artists taken while still in their prime. I’m painfully aware of the friends I’ve lost both in the filmmaking world and outside of it. It makes me really appreciate each day as a gift. The sun, rain, birds, squirrels, my loved ones and my beloved work family. I hope I’m blessed with good health to keep doing what I do. I hope my friends and family also enjoy this good health. Even watching some of Black Sabbath and Ozzy perform one last time due to Ozzy’s health issues made me pause. What if I could no longer do the things I love? I would hope I would find new interests and purpose. I joke when I get frustrated about our biz that I want to go bartend at the Moose Lodge down the road and just tell stories. But I know I would miss storytelling on the grand level that we have taken it. I was doing accounting breakdowns this weekend preparing to report and do payouts to our investors. I really appreciate all those good folks who have supported storytelling and the arts. I’m going to wrap it up here. This week will be fun with birthday gatherings, film mixing and more. I hope you all have a great week ahead. Thank you once again for stopping by and sharing a few moments with me.
(July 7th and 8th – my parents have back to back Birthdays) * Little Me
Bangladesh, Finland, and France are just a few of the places where we have artists stopping by from and I welcome you all. I’m sipping some hazelnut coffee and pondering the long week. It was a week of setbacks and success. We have been working hard to get the schedule at a place to send out. So many variables that are factored into this ‘battle plan’ and we think we have it about there. I often say that communication is the key and say like in soccer, the difference between two talented teams often comes down to communication. This allows an organized defense or a coordinated attack and these same principles can be applied to filmmaking. We sent around an intro with W9 (for end of year taxes) and these docs but the wrong series of docs was sent. So moments after we provided a battle plan including cast days of work, we had to nix it. A correct one will be sent very soon. That email created a waterfall of communication that just created ‘noise’ when we are trying to fix the send out. It happens. It happened early. We caught it and we’ll be flowing like water again soon. I like CDI to work at a high level of professionalism and we really do put the work in but even so, sometimes we error also.
(I give team sports credit for many of the successes shared by our film crews – do you see blame?)
This weekend dispersement on the various films went out and that was two days of check writing and prepping for mail out. But it is a sign of a healthy flow and it is what keeps us moving from one project to the next. I also had two very special birthdays to celebrate this past week that being my momma and daddy. A few great meals to celebrate them and a few little love gifts. I also had a nephew hurt his wrists in a playground fall off a slide. As someone whose only cracked bone was a wrist from soccer, I know the uncomfortable situation it can be. But it could have been much worse. A child who just plays video games might not face the same injury (although I’m sure video game wrist injuries are real) but it is important to challenge oneself with outside play. We had woods near our house and so we spent countless days running, climbing and playing in the wild terrain.
Let’s look at a few of the artistic updates-
SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA has been back in the Algona, Iowa theater for four days and today is the last of this FOUNDERS celebration. We’re finishing some minor corrections and adjustments for the home video release. We hope to have those dates to you all very soon.
HARSENS ISLAND REVENGE as noted above – has lots going on. We’ve been gathering props and I’ll be heading to another flea market in a few to seek out more. A Sunday stop at the local PX might have found one of our few hard props to find. We’re having some good luck with sponsors and product partners and we’ll be announcing more of those soon. I’m looking forward to more meetings this week and once the schedule released we have many more tasks that can follow behind that. I’ve also been carving time out to just work on my role in the film. That has been fun to work the creative side by side with the business.
Development – SPIRIT LAKE MASSACRE and HASTINGS. These two 1800’s pieces in development are very different. One is a film and one is a TV series and the tones are very different. One is a brutally honest look at the true history and the other has a lighter family feel found in shows like LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. These projects will continue to be pitched as pieces are put into place.
I plan to return to some of my on-going scriptwriting although the winter months tend to be better unless it’s a paid writing job. I have a few other meetings over developing projects that will require a script. I do truly love to write and it is what keeps things moving. A project without a script is usually 2 year from filming at best. A script can take a good part of a year to get into form. So when I hear people wanting to jump into production without a solid script is fantasy. In all these years I’ve learned an order of business exists. Many like to do “fun” cart before the horse things but without a solid foundation this is just wasted energy. You cannot just work HARD you must work SMART.
I was doing a little producer work on a music video I’ll be helping to produce. As I’ve stated before- I really enjoy this medium for storytelling being of the MTV generation. More on this in the coming weeks but I like that CDI is getting involved in this medium.
(A few of the CDI Tribe)
WRAP UP THOUGHTS–
I had a meeting at the end of the week where I was basically imparting the fact that although we can make it look easy funding and producing these stories they are all very difficult. Many artists want more without having any idea of the true costs and efforts involved. CDI is not a large faceless company but a small company of artists who enjoy having more control through hard work versus whims of others. We are working hard to get us to that next level whereas I can put our producers around the table more frequently. When we are together we have less communication issues and we can work out or around any obstacles. I know we have it better than many and not as good as others. But even those others have more at stake and so the pressures are even greater.
As we are now about two months out from gathering to tell our next story (Harsens Island Revenge) people are getting excited. For many of us it is when we truly get to see each other and spend some quality time as artists. This month we’ll fill the final cast and crew spots and start putting paperwork under folks. I feel bad for some who want to ride with the tribe for a project but just cannot make a schedule work. It is a real problem for some and as we’ve talked about before- every shoot is a sacrifice. Being away from home for a month is hard but it does allow us to be part of something truly great. I like one of the nuggets of wisdom one of our producers gave at the weeks end. Stumble gracefully:) We make mistakes weekly but learn from it. We also work hard to try and make everything go right but on occasion something goes wrong. It is important that the team absorbs these wins and losses as a TEAM. The only person ever at fault is ME. Finger pointing or blame game should not even apply if everyone is giving their BEST EFFORTS. Why? Because it is all under the CDI umbrella and I am the supervisor. Do I get everything right? No. Do I make errors? Yes. I think taking ACCOUNTABILITY and not being afraid to FALL or FAIL is a great strength. And a fail is not a forever fail it is just part of deductive process. “Okay that didn’t work how I wanted it to so we now know that was not a good path to go down.” Wisdom to apply in the future. Those who cannot take accountability or fail to rise when knocked down are the only ones to truly fail.
Lastly, tying into a law of attraction and the power of words on our psyche – don’t belittle yourself. Don’t put yourself down or bathe yourself in negativity. I see that often on social media that kind of talk that does paint the person as a victim of circumstance(s). If the same negative things keep happening you must change the equation. You have earned the great gift of learning what not to do. People’s sympathy will not fix most situations only you can. It might start with only one thing a day that you do, organize or put into motion but it all adds up. You will feel better as the load gets lighter not heavier. A good example I used before was that during Covid while many stalled and just watched numbers and engaged in negative banter I organized my life and organization. I created new pitch materials, scripts and put us in position to benefit as soon as the storm passed. The storm did pass and we were already in motion and I was more organized than I had been in years because I had the time and used it. Organize a drawer, a desk, a file cabinet – make plans to succeed. While others spend huge amounts of time pleading their misfortune or arguing against someones point of view on social media – I create. I create the tools and plans to move to the next step. This is not a random accident. This is a battle plan. With no plan you cannot have any victory.
I’m sitting back in my chair sipping a touch of coffee on a Monday morning. I first want to thank all our military vets for their service. It was a busy past week and this weekend was made even busier with travel. We went down south to visit a few elderly family members. They are down south in really nice assisted living homes. We got to visit, have an early Christmas for one who is doing really quite well even though they are in hospice. The other we celebrated an early birthday and what we made was some really happy memories. We stayed at the house of family in a basement full of beautiful antiques. The owner is a woodworker and so I got to see many great pieces including model cars and tractors all made of wood. We took our only dog Daphne with us on her final solo trip. She is not always the best car rider but had lots of fun once we were there. She is now sound asleep with her Lulu (our cat) who obviously missed her fierce. At the week’s end we’ll be bringing our new pack member home. We want to get a new puppy up to speed before I have to go off and film in the spring. The holidays allow us time to really bond and train a new puppy so this Friday a new little boy will be running about. He has had a few play dates to make sure the chemistry was good between the animals. While the cat Lulu might be a but stand-off at first, she was really into him.
“Hello, let me speak to Steven Spielberg, yes, I’ll hold”
This week we’re aggressively back into post and moving deals along. We did have a bit of a logjam threaten our work flow. It’s important to prioritize work flow properly. With Easter just around the corner we’re working full steam ahead to finish THE CHRIST SLAYER film. The color correction is underway. End credit works will continue. Sound design and music is being built each day. I plan to go out there for a few days to assist and give feedback. I hope to have theatrical roll out info this week to join the streaming, broadcast and DVD release. We’ll be doing a big PR release once I can confirm everything. The DVD artwork that the distributor is doing is just beautiful. I think I might be able to release a sneak peek here next week before revealing it in the PR release.
WILD FAITH – I’m waiting on some returned paperwork so I cannot announce our celebrity narrator but we recorded it last week. We’ll be announcing all the updates on this film in a PR release. Friday it went into evaluation with our theatrical partners to look at number of screens and regions. Our domestic deal is in the works and it’s really quite exciting. We’ll be delivering the film in Nov/Dec to BMG who will be distributing the film worldwide.
MBF: Man’s Best Friend has editing work being done on both the first trailer and the feature. It is looking great. I cannot wait for everyone to see the first look at our story of injured Marine Paul Landings.
(Above – DJ Perry as Paul Landings)
THE QUEST TRILOGY – We spoke early in this post about our third film THE CHRIST SLAYER that will be coming to audiences during the first of the year on the run up to Easter 2019. I do invite all of you to explore part 1 FORTY NIGHTS and part 2 CHASING THE STAR. Enjoy these two films with your family.
Our Spring film LOST HEART is being looked over by select talent. As any writer/producer a few of the roles were written with a talent in mind. So far the response has been strong. More on this as we travel down the development road towards production. I’m going to unpack from our trip and get after some of this work. I’ll leave you with a picture of our forthcoming new member of the pack.
I’m just up and sipping on the hazelnut coffee attempting to put my words down on here for you all to read. This has been a BUSY week as usual. Let me see – today is my youngest dog Luke’s birthday. I had labs growing up and they are great family dogs. I’ve been around many types including wolf/hybrids which unless you are trained should NOT be brought in as a pet. We had two other dogs, the eldest a Rot-mix and she guards. We got Daphne, an Aussie Shepherd/Golden Ret. mix and she is a fun dog but not a protector unless we were attached by moles. So we decided to get a third, one that the other two could help train and that could protect. I had never had a pit/pit-mix but also don’t buy the breed label. All dogs need to be worked with and have strong leadership. Long/short is that we adopted our Luke. He was the color of coffee when we first met him and highly self-assured. Our eldest put him in line a few times and our sweet Daphne thought her favorite stuffed animal dog had come to life. She was a great teacher (still is) and so we ended up with our buddy Luke. (After Star Wars) He grew to be a gentle giant and has brought us much joy and happiness. I watched him lick and give kisses to my niece and nephew – he’s curious, kind and watchful. Do NOT believe all the hype against any breed. Just like us we can all be kind or violent pending our environment and circumstances. We love having him and today he turned five.
Also had both parents birthday’s this week and a slew of movie business work. Let’s look at some of that.
“40 Nights” sales keep growing and everyday I’ve gotten wonderful messages from people who experiences the film. I’ve also been amazed at how many times people are watching the film and many are giving copies of the film as gifts. We are going to announce more platforms carrying the film and are working on foreign set ups.
“Chasing the Star” – the second in THE QUEST TRILOGY finished a first edit on Friday and is now fine tuning the edit. VFX and music work will start very soon. Exciting!
The 3rd film in the trilogy “The Christ Slayer” is in development with locations and such.
“Bestseller” is expanding and is a great summer film to watch up at that vacation house at night. Spooky:)
Development work on a few new projects is steadily getting done. Stay tuned!
We will start working on the next soundtrack release that will likely be “Ashes of Eden” but I want to include several with new releases.
I’ve been approached to look at a few projects/scripts for acting. I will see where that leads me. I’ve got a busy week ahead between meetings and we go to 4H this week. If you eat meat and want well cared for animals that also benefit young people the 4H is a great organization. I’m back on the soccer field today after a week off which was good. I had a knee that needed a little healing up. Is it 100% – no. But we will see what kind of battle I can fight today. It will also be a little bit hot.
