‘Harsens Island Revenge’ Has Roared Onto The Big Screen! (Plus other CDI Developments)

I woke to beautiful sunshine streaming in the window even though the outside is a touch chilly. We have flowers blooming and trees are budding and everything is starting to take on a beautiful green color. This past week I finally did my lawn mow and mulch. I finished my trimming of the apple trees and the mulberry trees might be next. I’ve loved that I can disconnect from the desk at times and go tinker on the property between business calls. I hope everyone had a nice Easter and carry that good feeling into the spring. We lost one of our hens to an illness and I buried her. The next day my lil mouse Jerry who I had been working to live trap and relocate got hung up on a sweet potato bag. When I say hung I mean just that found him dead. Poor lil dude was still warm I cut him free and tried to rub some life into him with gloves on but no dice. So another day and another burial amongst the raspberry bushes.

Okay let’s talk movies! Friday up in Alpena the classic cars were out and the flapper dresses and soot suits made an appearance for the kick-off showing. Of what? Harsens Island Revenge of course. An afternoon showing for cast and crew and the public got to see the first showing Friday night! A packed house and that carried right into yesterday and I’m going to guess today. I know folks who have seen the film three times already. It plays great on on the big screen and I’m excited to see it play Owosso, MI starting on May 17th! That is the home town of the book author Karl Manke and fellow actor/producer Anthony Hornus. There will be an afterglow party there also. Lansing, Grand Rapids and Detroit bookings are underway. The next film coming down the pike (funny term) is WILD FAITH CHRISTMAS. We are seeing a nice surge in viewing of the original film WILD FAITH. The sequel has a first pass on color correction and music has started as well as the opening credit sequence. This film will bring some of the favorite characters back to the big screen in November. The Season 1 that I have written might find its funding/footing we will see. I think fans of the first will really love this follow up and first time viewers will love the film. But they might be inspired to go back and watch the first film. Either way this amazing film is moving down the post process with Dennis Therrian’s music being currently created! ROM COMS MUST DIE the dark comedy about filmmaking and the first feature by Travis Hayward. On Monday we’ll watch the film on the big screen and see if we want any adjustments before we lock it. We are going to also look where we can add additional sound design. I completed my Voice Over work on Saturday so that will be laid into the picture. We’ll also discuss any tweaks to color correction and next week I should see a first trailer cut. This film is wildly unique and I think will be well received especially by artists. - I did a VO for an MSU promo piece which was really cool because it is my alumni school!
- A new music video for SHALLOW RISING should be coming out soon!
- I sent the new Semi-Sci-Fi script THE KINGDOM CHIP to a few individuals for feedback. I’ve gotten some great feedback on the script and some input that had me tweak the dialog a bit on a few scenes and I like the flow much better. This is sitting with one of our directors and I’m awaiting their feedback.
- After ROM COMS MUST DIE (RCMD) will decided to do a few of these lower-budget films giving some new opportunities to artists. I have two scripts being evaluated and I’m working to identify directors and DP’s (Camera). While releasing these two big films it might be a good breather to do the smaller scope films for a beat. We had so much fun with RCMD.

- Collaborations – I have a few follow up phone calls on possible collaborations. In these situations they have their own funds and want it done properly. A few of these include scripts already written and in development. In a few others it could have me writing the script. It all starts with the script.
- This week I talked about the post film work but it will be diving deeper into the development. Even typing here has helped me put everything into perspective. I think I know the direction I want to take. I’m anxious for some feedback this week that will help influence those decisions.

WRAP UP: What a week! I want to thank all the wonderful fan mail I received for the performance in Harsens as ‘Axel’ the WW1 vet who assists our lead Frankie (David Reardon) in his situation with the Purple Gang. We will try to get some more reviews done and announce some new theater dates! In the meantime the film will play in Alpena for at least the week maybe longer. A trip to Alpena would be fun and you could see a film too in that beautiful Sanctuary Cinema. Thank you to our friends there! I’m off to make a few eggs and work in the yard today. Fall Welcome! New Releases, New Projects and New Friends
Hazelnut coffee cheers! I want to once again welcome and thank all our readers from around the globe. We have readers from every continent and I’m happy that we’ve got that kind of reach. I started my morning coffee on the upgraded deck. The team still has to put the waterproofing underneath but it has been an enjoying experience. I have to say that they too are artists who work in wood. It has been expanded and once the waterproofing panels are in place it will allow the area below to be used. I think next Spring we might do a lower wood deck with some paving stones worked in. I’m a step closer to the hot tub I would like for my soccer bones after a rough game. I also like the old saunas and who knows maybe one day. Everything starts with a dream. Followed by a plan. Followed by the execution. I like to exercise on the deck and with it being so high up it is like being in a giant tree fort. I’ve been re-purposing the old deck boards and built a side step off the office fort. Today I’m going to finish some repairs to our gate. I spent yesterday refreshing it will new screws and such.
I’m getting closer to a final harvest on our growing plants. I see the cat-mint is getting to the end of the season. Several of the others are starting to shut down save the sage which still looks strong. I’ve decided to make two batches of beverages over the winter. I was given some paw-paw fruit by one of our film crew ladies Mollie and I plan to do a 5 gal wine run. I also have all the ingredients for an Irish beer so I’ll likely do a run on that. People who visit the fort office for a meeting often enjoy a handcrafted beverage. Often we have gifted beverages on hand and we’ve enjoyed being sponsored by Pepsi this last year. I don’t drink pop/soda but they make several beverages I enjoy like LIFEWATER, CELSIUS, BUBLY, GINGERBEER and MUSCLE MILK.

Speaking of Pepsi they are again sponsoring on our next film WILD FAITH CHRISTMAS and were a sponsor on Harsens Island Revenge. The latter being the next release for CDI. We are working hard this week to finish up the movie. Our Director Carl Weyant will be with our composer and sound designer Dennis Therrian this week to bring it home. I looking to have the new theatrical poster which we plan to use for the theatrical run. We are in talks to TRY and bring the film premiere to Alpena, MI where we shot most of the movie. We have to get the theater to work with us which only has like three screening rooms with only one over 100. So we have to explore other venues also at the high schools, college and maybe even a town away. We want to bring it to Alpena and so please do call, call, call and REQUEST that they book the film Harsens Island Revenge. We are just going to be up there about to film the Wild Faith sequel so it would work very nice. But due to Hollywood studios taking many screening slots around Christmas our additional premieres and theatrical runs will likely start in January 2025. We are about to make a deal on the theatrical run which we’re excited about. That said we would love to have the Alpena MI premiere on Nov 1st, 2024 and if the stars align right we will. But do please call the theater in Alpena or any of your local theaters as that will put a buzz into their ears.
WILD FAITH CHRISTMAS agreements have been built and will be dispersed soon. We’re working on putting our insurance in place. Our crew is set and we’re closing in on our final two cast roles with reads coming this week. Transportation is coming up with some good options on wagons and carriages. I’ll be pulling craft service stuff out to be packed up for the trip North. Plans are underway for some special effects surround our 1800’s copper mine. Props and wardrobe is being prepped and I’ve been oiling my leathers. Once it cools down a bit more I’ll start breaking in my boots again. My beard is BIG and so officially Ben Lily is in the house or is that cabin? Storyboarding and shot lists are being constructed and we are still working out a few other logistics. I’m very excited to be gathering with the artistic tribe for a few weeks to tell another great story.
SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA – This amazing based on true events story is entering a new holiday season. I’m going to explore theatrical event screenings with our new rep. We have several theaters want it last year but it was just arriving to home video and so we did not want to interfere with that. It is a great film of unity, love and forgiveness and the type of story we need about now. If you haven’t seen this film it is available to rent/buy on several platforms like AMAZON PRIME. Also DVD’s are available for the collectors out there.
MISC. UPDATES
Twin Engines Global/Deskpop are going to be handling the streaming on KNIGHT CHILLS and we’ll start delivering on that film this week. The new HD trailer is already out there and last week I sneak peeked some art work that will be for the novel. I will be circling around on that to make sure the book will be ready and available. A new marketing campaign on BEST YEARS GONE will be starting soon. Also new artwork for LOST HEART. Both these are great Fall watches. BESTSELLER is out there if you like nail-biting intensity and scares. Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town Special Ghost Town in the Sky special edition DVD’s will soon be going up for sale on the new EBAY merchandise site. It will go up just in time for Christmas. Also available will be the double feature HEAVEN’S NEIGHBORS and FIGURE IN THE FOREST DVD. We’ll have combo deals, free give aways with purchases and all the sales will have a charity component to it.
AN ORDINARY KILLER HD DVD from Two Average Joes Media was delayed due to the untimely passing of one of the partners. They are in hopes of having the DVD for sale by Oct. 1st, 2024 and the streaming is still set for December 15th with Ammo Content. In other news – some of you know I write for a series of animal story books for Baker Books. A new book about bird stories will release on December 2nd. I will fill you in more as we get closer to the release date.
The newly released music video by Shallow Rising has been doing well. The song is called REMORSE CODE. I will try to get some info on the next release and I hope to be filming some more videos in the new year. I enjoyed working with the entire band and crew. The drummers in my family and drummers I know hold this gent below in very high regards. He is a great drummer but also a great person. WRAP UP: I could be missing a few pieces of news but I’m going to wrap this up and go finish a fence fix. After I’m going to attend a soccer match for my niece. My nephew scored his first goal the other day and I was so proud of him. The game has brought much joy to my brother and I and allow us to still play together. I truly do love the game. My college alumni Michigan State University lost a close game yesterday. I hope the Detroit Lions can tighten up their game and get back on track winning. I love the clothes and the cooking as the weather gets chilly. The wood stove fires are not far behind. I need to have a few viking axe swinging sessions to get some more fire wood for the winter. I hope all of you have a wonder start to your Fall season. I appreciate you all. I’ve also been putting a touch of focus on updating all my acting materials. I do have one film project lined up after the Wild Faith sequel but will be looking for a few additional 2025 roles. I also plan to do some writing this winter. First Week on “Silent Night in Algona” Completed!
Good morning from WILD HAVEN in Algona, Iowa! I want to thank you all for understanding my move to Saturdays for our little chat and update. I’m waiting on the coffee maker to kick out our Kona Blend Coffee which has to have a splash of Hazelnut for good measure. I will try to brainstorm some of the top highlights of mine from the week. It will also paint a nice picture of the amazing endeavor we are undertaking.
- Our friends at Heritage Park made the first four days enjoyable and productive. Also thank you to the Winnebago folks for allowing us to store our vehicles in their garages. We were thankful to Robert Bradley who immediately knew how to start and drive many of these older clutch vehicles. But they looked pretty amazing on camera so again thank you to these owners helping us capture history.
- Our staging area/base camp (Ranger Station) is quite the sight to see with all the period clothes, props and period vehicles. Our artists in these departments are doing such an incredible job. I have loved seeing the civilian clothes and the military and PW outfits. The job is not easy under any circumstances but this film challenges them to give their very best. We appreciate them so much.
- It was so great to reunite with some great actor friends that I’ve not seen in a good while. Charles Powell and I worked together on “The 8th Plague” and later CDI’s “Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town,” makes his return to the CDI Tribe with a powerful role. Charles was quiet and polite until it came time for ACTION! David Reardon (MBF) also returns with a brilliant character that will surely thrill his fans. Garry Nation came ready to play and it’s always fun to see him work. We actually have some scenes together in the days ahead.
- Today MSU plays football again and we’re looking for another win. Speaking of MSU, I’m excited to have Carl Gilliard, a fellow MSU alumni with our cast. He and I have some great scenes together. I plan to do a little PR shoutout to share around the MSU news outlets. Go Green!
- The German actors all hit the scene and WOW! We have such a great group of actors overall but these German’s help tell a good amount of our story. They were really all so appreciative of the script and are here because of the story. I got to have a short chat with all of them. I was really taken by our PW antagonist Ben Schnau who’s isolating on-set process resembles some of my own process when on a shoot day. When I have intense work to do on camera I tend to get quiet and lost in myself/my character. I have had fellow actors be quite shocked to find me very personable off set. It’s because I always have so much going through my head either as talent or as a producer. But catch me at the fort for an informal meeting and you get a very different DJ.
- I’m so happy with our young lead ‘Samuel’ in from Texas. He found our midwest cold bitter but he’s getting thicker ‘midwest’ blood now. It’s a joy to watch someone at that age who is getting to ‘make believe’ on such a grand scale. At his age we had couch cushions and our imaginations. His parents were both actors at one time and his mother Stephanie, still acting, will be participating on this story as well.
- Speaking of mother and sons, we have my brother from another mother Josh Perry in with his momma Connie. We are so excited to have Josh back again with us and this role will be a challenge to see him lean into his anger. I know he will do a great job and I’m excited for the cast and crew who haven’t worked with him to be given that opportunity.
- The excitement and assistance of the community has been wonderful. The other day we had to stop at the Dollar General which also serves as a mail center and as a flatbed went by with our troop transport truck everyone rushed to the windows to watch. This story is this area’s history and once we finish this the story, the event will never be forgotten.
- On Sat the 13th on our day off we are doing a specially sponsored Smithfield Foods BBQ and a screening of BEST YEARS GONE in the local theater. A great thank you to our hard working cast and crew.
- We had a couple of VIP guests from our on-going distribution company visit. They loved seeing everything in action and the visit gives them an idea of the hard work that goes into the films they market. It makes the circle stronger and allows us to more easily tell these stories.
Speaking on the BEST YEARS GONE we have another Lansing, MI theatrical run at Celebration Cinema Lansing starting Nov 24th – 28th so people returning home for Thanksgiving can catch the movie. We were laughing putting together some promo – “Funniest Movie since Earnest Goes to Camp” – the film is funny and heartfelt. So far audiences have enjoyed the film theatrically and in a few months it will release worldwide. I’m going to wrap it up here as we have a tech scout at a few locations for next week. For those who don’t know what that is – you are not only looking at where to film a scene but where to stage a small army. I look forward to sharing more reports with you next Sat. The Rock is Heaviest at the Top of the Hill – Keep Pushing
“Making movies requires faith in yourself, your team and something higher”
I’m sipping Michigan Cherry coffee this morning and trying to wrangle cats over here. Anyone who says producing is easy is lying. We might make it look easy at CDI but it isn’t. Well the raising of funds isn’t. We have a good deal of funds committed to our next film endeavor LOST HEART but we have a little to go. It is hard because you cannot just advertise that you are looking for investors in violation of SEC laws which most filmmakers are unaware of. Also getting investors to understand the timelines and how you’re trying to make windows work. In Yuma, AZ it was the desert and the fact that past a certain point it was 100-120 degrees. In Michigan shooting especially up North its dancing around Memorial weekend and the 4th of July weekend. The schedule of stars and key elements required. I am eager for the studio production deal. I have a few that are in talks and that would essentially have us producing with studio money whereas they own the copyright. I’m game for that if it means not having to slog through the funding process every time.

EVERY independent filmmaker knows this issue. 99% of the contact with filmmakers is that have an idea, maybe a script but not the funds. They film on spec, they attend a slew of festivals in hopes of enticing that distribution deal. I use to do all that and it is hard. The festival trail is the Oregon Trail of indie film and the trail is littered with the bones and buried bodies of artists who had big dreams. I’ve made it to the middle of the pack whereas no more festivals required to lure the distribution deals. But the next step is even more exciting and we are getting close. But that said, it is still hard.

I’ve learned to look at a story in a deeper spiritual way – that it will be what it was meant to be. The artists that were meant to be involved will be. If someone steps out of the flow that creates an amazing opportunity for new artists. I’ve been the replacement actor before. I like to keep teams of artists growing and evolving but again it is hard to launch a project. We do it often but every one of them has been a task, painful at times. I have joked on the last few projects at the hardest times, that I should just tend bar at the Moose Lodge down the road. I have some great stories that I could share for years with the patrons playing KENO and sipping suds.

LOST HEART will either shoot in May or July and I will know Tuesday by how the chips fall. The key is once you have enough fuel/funds that you also have enough prep time. We’ve done a lot of ground work but you are limited until you can make hard offers. I will be opening the bank account as now we have all our paperwork around. Our committed funds will start flowing in this week and the ship is getting prepped to travel. BMG will once again be distributing so no shopping of the film required. We have a small handful of roles to finalize but cast and crew will be approached once our film dates are set. I’ve talked to some of you and I look forward to creating with you. The point is lots of work go into the launch so appreciate that next time you are sailing along making a film. OK. I will hold off on retiring to the Moose Lodge to bartend:)

Saturday Summary and September Happenings
Good day to all of you out there. I hope your week was a productive one with some enjoyment along the way. I wanted to take a few moments to blog with all of you out there. I see again we have new international readers. We had a bit more heat this week in Michigan and that slowed the roll on yard work that I’m going to make up today. This week I finally hung a large theater sign in the office that I’ve had for a long time. I can say that my office is really getting there with organization of stuff. It is funny how I can chart my life by what film I was doing at a given time. I did an interview Q&A for the “Dead Quiet” movie that is saying it will show 1st quarter 2015. That is also the national DVD/VOD target for “Ashes of Eden”. I also think that “Bestseller” will be moving into theaters about that same time.
BESTSELLER – I’ve been a tad quiet on this film as it moves down the post line. I had the pleasure of watching the new cut of the film a few times this week to give notes. Most all my notes were on how pleased I was with how the 1st round of suggestions were incorporated. I’m excited because the pick ups and the trims to the film have me very excited. It is a tense and exciting film and Michigan is showcased in such a beautiful way. I can’t wait to see it on the big screen. More PR will be forthcoming as we approach an end-of-the-year premiere. Great job cast and crew!
ASHES OF EDEN will start a theatrical run in the Detroit area (Canton & Novi) in September and I’m excited for people on that side of the state to be able to see this fine film on the big screen. We got a great review from one of the TV networks I’ve dealt with before and so I think we will license there. Also a few foreign territories are moving forward with negotiations. I’ve enjoyed this collaboration and look forward to the next one with Shane Hagedorn.
We also will see other CDI/CDI associated films heading to the big screen and several have new distribution opportunities opening up. We will be meeting this week to discuss more of this and I have some distribution offers to consider. What films would you like to see on the BIG SCREEN? Re-issue of films? A TV pilot I did a few years ago in Canada may become a feature film. It is a comedy and deals with stock car racing and so that could be fun.
I’ve been having some great talks with my management about placement in a few larger studio films. I had materials sent yesterday on a film that might be in need of a strong supporting man. I really liked the director and so I gave my interest to go ahead with the send off. I know at least one studio project I’m slated to be in but I have to keep that quiet until they are ready to PR. I’m enjoying finishing up stuff that is on my plate. But I do have one eye on the future. We’ve had some great development talks and I see a few of our films moving ahead.
I want to close this chat early and go do some yard work before it is way too hot. I have observed all this world news with water buckets, racial tensions and pending war with Isis. How do I feel about it all? See we provide escapism from all these highs and lows in life and I know everyone has different views. I like awareness for diseases but also know how desperate others in the world are for water and to just see waste everywhere… Racial tensions/police tensions – time will tell the story. Isis – challenging the USA is well…not real smart. A common enemy is what often unites Americans and when that focus gets redirected…
So I’m going to return to some yard work. I plan on grilling and chilling a bit. A soccer match tomorrow and time with my brother and friends. I hope you all have a good week. I’m sorry to a friend or two who hit me up with indiegogo/kickstarter stuff – I don’t believe in that funding for profit earning films. For a non-profit or fan film – perhaps an exception. I just see more asking, asking, asking for unreasonable amounts/budgets that don’t/won’t usually get funded. I give to charity where I see fit and no challenge is going to change that. And I don’t play any online games. So if you have recently requested any of these things I politely decline.
