Hazelnut coffee cheers! What a week it has been and the weekend has been full also. I want to welcome our new readers from Brazil, Germany, European Union and more. Please do invite folks to follow along with our little weekly break. We’ll discuss more of the business aspects here soon but around the property I’m trying to keep up with mowing. Yesterday did some major trimming to a lilac tree and we constructed a cedar arbor that was from Christmas. Luckily it was not too hard to construct. We still have a planter with a built in trellis to build. The hops is growing like mad but I worry about their health this year as they climb up the deck. This Summer we’re going to bite the bullet and have a new deck built. It is needed and will be greatly enjoyed. It will also create a space under the porch too which one day will house the hot tub I want to soak my bones. UPDATE: After weeks of morel hunting and finding nothing I had pretty much given up. This morning as the window curtain was being closed what do you think was so big it was seen from ten feet away? MOREL! A closer look outside found a half dozen mushroom trees! One had to be sacrificed to the bugs. But they were so big and heavy they were drooping over. The largest morels I’ve seen in the wild top date.
In a bit we’ll be walking the flea market close to us. Last week we went to one and all I got was a door mat for the office. It was a Bigfoot mat which puts a few smiles on faces. We went to a living estate sale yesterday of someone we know and it was a fun adventure. I got some great cast iron hardware for gates and such. And also a large collection of high end tea blends. I’m a tea drinker starting about noon. So far my favorite I’ve tried was a Scottish blend. Malty with a unique taste that brings about thoughts of peat bogs and bagpipes. I really do enjoy such little treasures. I will be trying different teas for several weeks. Let’s take a look at some bullet points of top developments in the film world.
- Post Production has been working to get all the software aligned for the Harsens Island Revenge sound work. The cut is locked and we’ll evaluate progress end of July so we can more accurately predict a finish date and plan a premiere. We all want Fall versus Spring but that will all depend on how the next few weeks go. A trailer preview is almost half way done with its edit and a theatrical poster is being discussed.
- The deal was signed on THE RED WHITE AND BLUE PROJECT charity release of AN ORDINARY KILLER. A based on a true story crime drama of a two decade plus cold case solved by persistent detective work led by Vietnam vet Lynn Kendall. The podcast Two Average Joes Media had the film remastered and is coming out on a dual layer HD DVD. We’ll be doing PR once we have a place that you can buy the DVD. Also thinking of doing a return to theaters special showing whereas DVD’s can be purchased after. We will see but this film is returning and this time for a good cause- helping military families. We will looking at streaming maybe mid December.
- The Smoky Mountain western GHOST TOWN has also been remastered and is returning to the market. We’ll be announcing some streaming release platforms in the coming weeks. A new 2024 trailer has been released and we might also do a few special event showings in N. Carolina, we will see. We plan to do some great retrospective interviews and stories in the media in the coming weeks.
- A new deal between CDI and a publisher has been made that will output our novelization and scripts/making of books to Amazon in soft and hardcover. Both the films above have books and we’ll likely do making of/script releases also.
- KNIGHT CHILLS which was remastered and is available on BluRay is being prepped for streaming release this Fall. The book and script/making of are being assembled and will also be rolling out. We are working on a new trailer and poster art.
- SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA is starting to see the flow from home video and we want to thank all the good folks out there who actually bought the DVD to own. We sold over 2,000 DVD’s right out of the gate launching us past our marketing cost and into profit. We know streaming is even stronger and so we look forward to see how the flow increases in the coming year. The film is also getting ready to start its UP FAMILY & FAITH TV run which will bring the film to even more audiences. The film is currently being shopped in Cannes France and we hope many countries will get the chance to see this powerful WW2 drama based on a true story. Thank you to all of you who have shown your amazing support for this film. We will also explore putting it back into theaters for this upcoming Christmas season.
- Speaking of the Iowa based film SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA we are working to develop two other Iowa based motion pictures. One based on the Spirit Lake Massacre and one based on the state hero Frank Gotch, world champion wrestler. We are making some progress but not as fast as we would like. We wanted to film next year but that is all dependent upon funding. Development is one step at a time.
- I’m about a third of the way into my third script in the last three months. We’ve been working at the development of our 70’s film and have some of the funding in place just not what we require. We’re going to give it a few more weeks but are prepared to produce 2-3 smaller scope films if needed. I’m really enjoying this third writing endeavor as its a sequel film to one of our very popular films. We’re getting ready this week to start processing payout back to our investors which might encourage a few of our art loving supporters to jump onboard these new stories. I was delayed by 2 weeks waiting for checks on three of the films to come in. They were all sent the same time but the US postal service was a tad slow. But they arrived on Friday and so we’re good to start that process.
- We did the second music video for the same band last week at Golden Hour Virtual Studios. It was a great place ran by nice people. We really enjoyed working in the space and we’ll be using it again. The previous video is releasing end of the month while this video moves into post production. I’ll wait for them to release their own PR before talking about it too much. But I will say that it absolutely ROCKED!
- I’ve submitted my new headshots to Treasure Coast Talent Agency and I’ll give folks a link once it is open and available. I’m going to try and finish narration work for a book series I’ve been doing. I am getting a tad excited to get back in front of the camera and create a character. With a bit more work I’ll be able to bring you a few new roles.
- An interview for a new CDI associated documentary film was shot this Saturday and discussion on another are soon to happen. It is another class of filmmaking but one I also enjoy. What are some of your favorite documentary films?

I’m going to start to wrap it up now. I’ve got some screenwriting underway and some PR I could start outlining. If the rain holds off I might do a bit more outside work also. I’m excited to see where all the pieces fall in development. I know that Harsens Island Revenge is going to be a great story enjoyed by many. My flea market treasures included a few books, a CD Best of THE DOORS, and a LP of an old rap group 2 LIVE CREW. SCORE! A gentle rain is falling nurturing all the plants we’ve got started and the lawn which has been seeded with clover for the leprechauns and chickens. I want to welcome the abundance of new readers from India, Italy, Poland, Philippines and more. I LOVE that our readers are from all over the world. This year I’ve been struggling a bit but it is with success. I will tell you a story of a silly little boy (Who could that be?) who just wanted to be an artist. My father who was a practical man due to his responsibilities of having a family when young, had a hard time seeing my dream. We had many disagreements in those early teen years and I recall one that ended loudly with me announcing that “I want to be an artist, not a businessman and become an assH!%#& like you.” Boy was I stupid. Unaware of how the world turns I struggled to find my way. My dad was my first mentor and still is a steady voice that I listen to these days versus argue with.

Thanks to people like Lynn Drzick (IN THE WOODS) and later Jeff Kennedy (CDI) and Bill Breakey (Imaginative Endeavors) I started to learn the business that went with the creative. In the case of Lynn Drzick and later Kennedy, they both were dreamers like myself. They didn’t discredit ideas they just helped to illuminate the needed steps to get to that next place. Bill Breakey was a many times over businessman retired to just doing fun endeavors. We had an editing facility together right up to his death at a young 80-some. Our weekly business lunches allowed me to table any issues and get some sound advice. Rance Howard, yes, Ron and Clint Howard’s dad, was my last real mentor and the only one from the entertainment world. I always got straight forward mid west kind of advice without a shred of Hollywood BS. Again these people were very valuable to me in my journey.

My biggest fear is of making mistakes but I’ve learned that by stats alone you will make some. These are some of the best growth building events but don’t feel like it at the time. My college education gave me a process and a path to discover answers outside of me. But most of my real experience has been forged in the fires of doing. As I’ve grown into the fringes of being an elder in our business that often burns people up, I have evolved. I see more clearly my mistakes and miscalculations. Friendships hurt even in trying to do the right thing. You learn that you’re not perfect. Not the perfect businessman, friend or associate. Even those who don’t particularly like me cannot question my passion and drive. At times I keep taking on more and hope the weight of it doesn’t break me. Maybe that is where the slow growth has allowed my legs, back and mind to grow stronger. I was never the genius at the top of my class. My mind drifted off to far away places and stories danced in my head. High school was always trying to keep my head above water. A struggle to keep myself out of trouble for average grades that were in constant danger from my artistic distractions.

If I had better budgets I could hire wiser people to handle certain aspects but our modest budgets only allowed needs versus wants. I’ve had to learn to do many things unable to pay for the service. I have adapted and manage but I’m now working to try and streamline. To resurrect older films and ready them for re-entry into the marketplace. But is it worth it? As the storyteller it is. As the businessman it can be a question-mark. Some projects at CDI were ahead of their time. And dishonest distributors early on were the bane of our progress. Now much of that has been worked out and I’m giving my best efforts to make sure these films are not left behind. To die on a format no longer in use and unable to be retrieved. I gain no extra income from any of this and it taxes my peace of mind for fear of doing something wrong in the process. I’ve carried some of this same worry throughout my journey but you stay steadfast and when you look up decades have gone by. In your wake are beautiful stories that elicit the occasional fantail saying how your story helped them in their darkest hours. Maybe I do that for them. Some a grieving couple being torn apart by tragedy can find some healing in FIGURE IN THE FOREST. Or someone struggling with mental illness can feel less isolated and find a spark of joy in HEAVENS NEIGHBORS. AN ORDINARY KILLER will be used by a non-profit that helps military families. I am leaning more into charity as I go deeper into this journey.
I want to thank all of you for being out there. I think putting these feelings into words and confronting some of these fears helps me. I really only have one “pain in the butt” project from the past that is full of complexities. Some 15+ years later trying to breath life back into it and untangle all the strands. But I will spend a certain amount of time each week to this past projects. Already with some great help from Dean Teaster, John Mashni, Brett Frame, Scott Bakkila and others these stories will live on for many more decades. I liked a statement that said, the first time you do something is always difficult. Much truth there. Also, you get by with a little help from your friends. We are a tribe and I’m very thankful to have all these wonderful people on this adventure of life.

Harsens Island Revenge – From the director’s POV the film is a lock and he’s very happy. This Weds we’ll get to view it with most of the VFX inserted by our supervisor Erik Steele. This was suppose to happen last Weds but our director’s flight back into the country was delayed. That said, music is already being worked out for some of the chase scenes that were already locked up. We will be having fun in studio working on this film with Dennis Therrian. Next up for discussion will be the theatrical poster and trailer cut. Exciting times ahead!

SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA – The home video release has been going strong and we’ll soon be starting to see the results of our flow. Once received, it is a process of reporting and processing on all the films. Our release to UP Family & Faith is growing closer. I’ve enjoyed all the positive communications from people who enjoyed this film. I think this movie will just grow over the next few years. The story is beautiful and showcases a piece of almost forgotten history. CDI is very good at capturing these stories and making sure they are not erased from the public’s mind. I’m still very curious to hear how the German people enjoy the film as it reaches them.
I’m excited to say that our distributor TWIN ENGINES GLOBAL/DESKPOP has launched their non-family/faith free with ads streaming site called FREE4ALL that features some of CDI’s our CDI associated films like BEST YEARS GONE and BESTSELLER.

NEW DEVELOPMENT
Development has been in high gear here at CDI. Packaging and pitching and the gathering of investors and sponsors are all underway. We are working hard to get into production on a few CDI stories. Some exciting new stories to be told only how CDI can tell them. I’m hearing our new music video to shoot might be coming up here in May. I’ve been doing voice over on another book in the series that has been ongoing the last few years. I even took ten minutes during our pick up shoot for Harsens Island Revenge to have the great GW Burns pop off some new headshot pics for the new agency. My page will be going up on Treasure Coast Talent Agency, so if you want me to consider bringing a role to life on your project please do reach out there. I’ll attach one on this blog in Black & White which is how they use to be. The agency one will be full color. I’ve recently just finished one script for a development package and I’m 1/4 of the way through the next one. It is interesting because it is writing
WRAP UP:
I’m enjoying coming out of winter and with today in the 70’s we might be leaving the days of the wood stove shortly. But maybe a few outside fires. Also looking at a few yard builds this year. I LOVE all the nature that is on our little piece of property. I’m looking forward to more training. The martial arts keeps me limber and ready for action. Soccer season starts NEXT week and I’m excited to be out with the team battling it out. I do truly love that competition and pushing myself to my limits each week.
Inside the office I’ve been doing major organizing and I’m happy about that. Like I mentioned earlier I might start moving some of the swag and memorabilia out as charity to our fans. There are many organizations in need and we’re already doing that with our doc film FOR THE LOVE OF CATCH that helps wrestling clubs and organizations struggling. Dogs, military families…the causes could go on and on. We’re taking steps in that direction and I’m proud to see that keep growing.
I just enjoyed some of our eggs and 4H bacon and I’m going to get on with my Sunday. Maybe a bit of screenwriting but next week will be a busy one. I have some meetings starting Monday and they could be rather exciting. I hope you all have a great weekend and start strong on your TO DO’s for the week ahead. Coffee Cheers! I’m sitting down with all of you on a Monday versus Sunday due to a trip to Roanoke, VA. A charity test screening was happening for a western film WAS ONCE A HERO. We met the writing/producer Dan Searles when we were at The Wild Bunch Film Fest in Wilcox, AZ with WILD FAITH. I was invited as a VIP guest with Shane Hagedorn who has a powerful supporting role in the film. I got to met and visit with many great folks from this film family and it truly is a family with many working on the film. I got to support some other friends and fellow actors like Darby Hinton who was the lead, Robert Carradine, John Carter Cash and Rebecca Holden. As I said, I got to meet some wonderful folks including Mary Badham who took a break from her Broadway schedule to attend. She was once the youngest nominee for a supporting actress Academy Award for playing ‘Scout’ in To Kill A Mockingbird which now I’m going to rewatch.

We had several great meals and attended a wonderful event to benefit the non-profit Healing Strides. They use horses in their healing process. We stayed in a beautiful pre-Civil War home that had been added onto in the early 1900’s and has since been modernized without looking like it is. I LOVED the spring water both to drink and shower in. It was so beautiful as the house sits amongst pecan trees set against rolling hills. We also got to hit a few farm/craft markets and explored the historic town. Such wonderful history and tradition and the mountains can be truly so very rejuvenating. We have some associations in the works and this was a great step beyond the zoom calls to really get to know folks.

AN ORDINARY KILLER – This past CDI film is getting a new life as a fundraising tool for another non-profit that benefits military families. A good fit since the lead detective was a veteran dealing with his own issues while trying to solve a case. The ‘based on a true event’ film has new facts coming to life due to the efforts of real detectives that work on cold cases. Their podcast Two Average Joes just released a special presentation of our making of that film brought current in preparation for a re-release of the film to select avenues. SILENT NIGHT IN ALGONA – This amazing piece of history preserved in this motion picture continues its march into new circles of distribution. In a few months the film will launch onto UP FAMILY & FAITH TV . The film continues its release on transactional streaming platforms like Amazon, Googleplay, iTunes and more. DVD sales are proving that the medium is not dead and actually growing as people once again realize that value of ownership in physical media.

Harsens Island Revenge – We had a watch last week on the second pass of the film with the new pickup footage added in and it was powerful. The voice over was dropped in and the WW1 footage just added a wonderful layer. EPIC! The 61 VFX shots are being added in and we are looking to have a locked picture with completed VFX next week. We had a great in-studio meeting over sound design and music. That will be another great phase that might include some grilling:) Our director Carl is back on schedule releasing some of the screen capture portraits. The CDI CLASSIC COLLECTION– From KNIGHT CHILLS, CDI’s 1st feature to GHOST TOWN, our 6th feature and the last of the CDI Classic Collection. All the films are being prepped to re-enter the market. This includes literary, new streaming HD, blu-ray, retrospective interviews and more. The first 6 features make up the classic era of CDI when we were just starting up and learning our craft. We’ve been doing test runs of the new HD versions of the films and I can say it is quite amazing. Kudos to the technology that is giving us this gift. The 1080 version of Knight Chills is beautiful but 2k, 4k? AMAZING….We already discussed AN ORDINARY KILLER and the new releases will include theatrical for some of them if not all of them. WHY? Because we can;)
WRAP UP: Again this weekend I was reminded how blessed I am to be doing what I love. To be working and laughing with such talented and passionate people. Lining up the business ($) on a project is always a chore but the resulting art always makes it worth it. I’m motivated to get back after it and seal up the deal on our next film HOT ROD LOVE and a series of projects working to be able to film next year. I’ve got to keep moving pieces on the chess board but we have a great team working towards our goals. I’m looking forward to new concept art on one project and some meetings on others. I’m excited about the warmth. We left in cold rain that lasted until we were 30 min from our destination and arrived to sunshine and warmth. Now it feels like we brought it back with us. I’m eager to start doing some outdoor stuff as well. My first mowing might be at hand and that is always rewarding. I’m going to be planting some fresh clover and already we have things budding. I’m ready for soccer season and outside meetings. Until we chat again next week on our regular day of Sunday, keep dreaming. Keep doing little things to move closer to your goals. In the meantime, be good to one another!
