Welcome December – Film Updates

Welcome December! The hazelnut coffee is flowing as I reflect on my week. Of course we have been straightening the ship after our ASHES OF EDEN voyage. One last paycheck gone astray in the mail, photo releases and a few last signatures on paperwork. A few communications with distributors letting them know our status. This project is working its way into post-production and I expect a finished film around May 1st, 2013.

I’ve been unpacking and finishing the new office. My soccer buddy Brian was over to help with wiring and finishing some insulation. Maybe some work today – all that is very close to being complete. It will be a great place to plot and plan future endeavors.

Either last night or today (time zone) the film “Benjamin” that I co-starred and produced on will play in Egypt at  Cairo’s International Film Festival following its sold out showing at the Big Apple Festival in NYC. I hope the audience connects with it. It has a beautiful message in it.

There are new trailers forthcoming for “Darkest Night,” “Locked in a Room,” and ” Donors”  and the 1st two have distribution domestically and will be coming to audiences in 2013!

“Book of Ruth” is finding new Holiday outlets like Meijer stores and I believe Wal-Mart. We also are about set to roll into pre-prod on two more biblical era films. One that I likely will play a kind-hearted lead and the other a ruthless military general. Needless to say I’m excited about that.

Dean Teaster’s next film “Long Road Home” set for 2013 is also closing in on financing having already gotten a distribution deal.

TV deals on two of my films is about complete. We need to clone the masters. Stay tuned for the press release on this. The CDI Distribution Sales Team should be up and fully operational in 2013 here.  I’m looking forward to seeing more of the library getting out there to even more audiences as our network becomes larger.

I had the immense joy of talking to a director on one of our CDI associated projects who was approving national artwork. He had such kind words basically saying that I saw a potential that he did not at the time. I wanted things ran professional because we would get distribution. And we did. And a good company as well.

Distribution is the path to success because it is a mass media but if the masses don’t see it – it fades away.  That is the one thing we can assure with our products now and many cannot achieve that. I’m excited as audiences get to watch the collective work of the artists involved.

I’m proud to say “Deadly Renovations” will be coming to all my Viking friends via Eventity Entertainment on VOD so be on the look out and CHEERS!

Actually many talks underway on distribution and of course development. I’m working to wrap the year up into a nice little bow. Enjoy your new year ahead.

“ASHES” Wrap & Present & Future Film News

Again I sit in my cozy chair sipping the hazelnut coffee and pondering the past and future. I’m happy to say we brought “Ashes of Eden” in on schedule and within budget. I had barely wrapped when the holiday was upon us. I’ve been fighting to get my sleep patterns straight after a month of “battle”. I’m very happy with what I saw and I will go to battle with some of them again I’m sure. Next stop is post and distribution.  There has been a lot of praise and such tossed about from the shoot but what I saw was film professionals acting like film professionals. It all starts with management and trickles down to keys and all the way to PA’s. (Product assistants) It was one of the smoothest film sets yet and that is dealing with cold and such. I wanted to really showcase Michigan on both sides of the camera. But that proof was also up to the artists to provide. I’ve worked with some amazing people in this industry and taking pride in the work is the key.  As I get older I just have zero tolerance for dramatic conflict causing B.S.. I think the key is to isolate and not feed into it. It is also something you cut away on future endeavors. I tell people I’ve made friends in the industry but it stems from respect and hard work. This is not a popularity contest nor strut walk of artists. It is about the individual who can blend their art seamlessly with others. Conforming to a single directorial vision all within the confined parameters of budget. Overall I think we had a great group of artists – I look forward to working with many of them again.

In other film news…

– “Benjamin” had a great showing last Sat. at the Big Apple Festival in NYC to a sold out show.

– Also Eventity Entertainment will release “Deadly Renovations” into Scandinavia on VOD this 2013.

– I’m signing up TV deals on “Wicked Spring” and “Figure in the Forest” to release on Parables Network.

– “Darkest Night” will have a domestic release trailer in advance of its March 22nd release date for US/Canada.

– “Donors” is doing final pick ups before it comes over to MI for musical score.

– “Book of Ruth: Journey of Faith” can be watched on Netflix and is also now at Meijer’s 1500 stores. I’m also hearing Wal-Mart.

– “7 Stones” is to have a Michigan TV premiere in December. More info soon.

Now while we set up “ASHES” post I will start looking at what I’m going to do in 2013 as an actor, producer and with Collective Development Inc. www.cdiproductions.com Our website will need an end of the year update soon. Enjoy family and friends and set your goals for the year ahead! If you enjoy this blog feel free to share it with the artists in your circle.

Be true.

The Ship Into Port

Today will be the last day of our ASHES OF EDEN journey. It has been an incredible journey filled with one powerful performance after another. It has also been captured by a very talented crew. I’ve had my patience tried once or twice over minor issues but all those things fade. What we will be left with is a story that is a testimony to what we cast & crew did this last quarter of 2012. I was surrounded by some of my old warriors and new ones. We attacked each day riding on the enthusiasm from the day before. What is great is that now the holidays are upon us and we can all rest knowing a job well done. The post process will begin with editing and move into music and sound with my supervisor Dennis Therrian.  This will be a great experience putting this story together.

The VOD (Video on Demand) sites for “Deadly Renovations” are starting to pop up. “Book of Ruth” in Meijer stores now and I think Wal-Mart also. Tonight is a big showing of “Benjamin” in NYC at the Big Apple Film Festival. I thought it was last week but that is because I was in some odd time warp and got my days mixed up. I’m excited for that whole team of artists that busted in the record NYC heat to capture that film. I wish I could be there with all of you but I know it will be well received.

The old FORT/office is sold. The new FORT office is built and most of the furnishings are there now just packed up. This week it will be about organizing everything. We are still doing the walls in a few places so that limits what can be placed but by 2013 it will be a fully functional Deathstar:)

I’m off to go prep the final payroll today and off to set to hand them out. After that I’m back to Ionia for the night to help breakdown and oversee the production breakdown. The ship will be in the port and it will be time to secure it and unload our precious cargo.

Have a great weekend!

Observations From the Captains Deck

It is funny the little life observations you note when you bring many artists together. We are just shy of two weeks in and I have to say the only issues we are truly having are food related. First as someone else noted – you would not work another job whereas you would be consuming calories constantly. Yes. Folks do make stops at a break rooms or maybe they even fudge with a donut or sweet here or there, but this is Man Versus Food stuff going on.

We have had two meals per day on this current film and a craft table that often has dips, 2 kinds of chili, chicken noodle soup and other various  spreads. We’ve replaced our craft table once with a different person more organized to the task and pace. We’ve had extra dishes coming in from all sides yet still a few of the crew are not pleased. I will start by saying that those folks do seem to fit the Michigan profile. By that I mean overweight – yes we excel at that in this state. We  seek to put protein, healthier calories and use a system of gift thermal cups and large jugs of water, lemonade, teas and such as well as coffee and hot teas. This is a green choice and one based upon the countless times that I’ve accounted for 3 sip bottles that get left, discarded and wasted. Also brand wise with soda or whatnot that we don’t provide – you will never please everyone. This is a small budget film being done in a professional manner. We have been discarding food since we improved on week two with the craft/catering. After seeing homeless in our own state and in other countries I’m really quite ashamed of these few individuals. We’ve negotiated good deals to allow this cast and crew to eat well. But, it doesn’t satisfy all of them. Give A want B – give B now want C – an unending game.  I almost feel like giving them their few dollars for the day and be done with it. If I want fancy French Sparkling water and some exotic brand of smoked almonds and the craft table doesn’t have it – you go buy it. No Sun Chips and you must have them – buy it. Dr. Pepper addict – go buy it. A few of these crew guys have recently worked on in-state studio projects and told me how much these personal Michigan based projects mean to them. Yet, if this isn’t SCREAM 4’s craft table – complaints. WOW! I mean I’ve had a $900 dollar bottle of wine and $200 steak dinner where the cow must have been raised as a king to demand those prices. But I still love a good Michigan hot dog. I can eat Mac N Cheese without a complete system shut down. Now to remind you this isn’t diva talent. This is a few select crew guys and all in the same department. I can say that at CDI we don’t roll like that. Respect!  It is also interesting to note that as the food portions increase the speed of the crew decreases. Just a truthful note. So as my LA friends say, if craft is your biggest issue – you are doing great. Man Vs. Food Vs. Productivity.

I hope those few continue to make it in the big game because that attitude is not welcome on either side of the camera. Nuff said:)   On the other side of the coin I’ve seen many, many folks that I will be using again in the very near future on Michigan CDI projects. The footage we are getting looks amazing. We have distribution folks interested and this will be a solid story that shows some MADE IN MICHIGAN pride. IF any of those complaining people read this blog, note my professionalism in not calling you out by name. Put your feet back on the ground and be the great artist we brought in – without all the extra B.S. please. You can add all that lost weight back on over the holidays. Ho! Ho! Ho!

I think we have a handful of new films about to launch. Dean Teaster’s LONG ROAD HOME was in talks in Chicago this week on financing. We are supposed to do back to back biblical era films and speaking of…BOOK OF RUTH now in Meijer stores for Christmas. I’ve also heard that it is at Wal-Mart but have not seen it there yet.

I’m still being told “7 Stones” completed by years end but we will see. I have no control over that particular post process. I also saw a rough cut of “Realizism” and was quite happy. “Benjamin” is playing Big Apple Festival tonight in NYC at the Tribeca theaters. “Darkest Night” and “Deadly Renovations” working some foreign deals and “Locked in a Room” delivered to the distributor and should make its announcement soon. Post music deal is signed on “Donors” and that will get underway around the 1st of the new year.

I will have the old personal office officially closed on Monday. The new office has my stuff in it but all centered up as the walls are still being covered. It has been quite the journey. This year will soon come to a close and I will regroup for a great 2013. This was a good year so far with more ups than downs and so I can’t complain.

I had the French director Ian contact me about his film and I need to make some time for international communication which is usually on very off hours. I will Ian I promise:) Some great projects on the horizon. There has been talks of helping another friend produce some films and we’ve got our own associations so 2013 will be busy for sure. As for now I’m getting ready to work on pre-payroll stuff. There is just so much work that goes into this films especially if you don’t have Hollywood studio budgets to throw at the small things. All that doesn’t assure a good film as we all know. I just want one more week from this crew of giving their best and keeping their gripes to a minimal. I wonder if those few will give their mom’s, grandma’s, girlfriends and wives shit over not have enough Thanksgiving dinner to feed them despite an abundance of food. Note – I didn’t include any women in the whining:) Score for the ladies! Buck up! The ship docks in a week. This is a war ship not a cruise line with 24/7 buffet:)

Have a great weekend. Damn I’m hungry now. Karma:)

On the Open Sea…

The ship has moved powerfully through the open waters. The crew expertly navigates the winds and the ship glides forward towards the final destination. Leaders emerge and others stumble as the demands of the ship are met. Success comes from prep and planning – organizing and initiating battle plans. The rations have to be distributed and the wants are separated from the needs. It is a on-going thing day by day looking for strain on the ship. We are moving forward with keen eye on a date – sailing along  – the sailor on the sea of fate.

So we have seen some amazing work on ASHES OF EDEN thus far.  Next week starts the next 3rd of our film and introduces a whole slew of characters into our story. We also will start the week with our few kinks worked out.

“Deadly Renovations” is now sprouting up on VOD so if you have been waiting for ON DEMAND check it out now! “Darkest Night” announced March 22nd as the release date in US/Canada. ‘Locked in a Room” is delivered to our distributor there and we hope to have some release dates soon. A few TV licenses are underway and maybe a few more street dates on projects moving towards release. “Benjamin” playing festivals – overall great movement.

I’m excited on the actor level to bring my character in ASHES OF EDEN to life. I’ve been building him bit by bit and soon he will live on-screen.

Back to work here!

Happy Saturday,

DJ

Autumn Film Updates

So this has been a wonderful week of prepping for the “Ashes of Eden” shoot. I’m actually writing this Sat. night so I can actually catch some of you up on the events as of late. We assembled an excellent crew – so much that for the last two nights I’ve looked to my phone for texts or emails with fires to put out or issues to address. It has been quiet. The office today was just a relaxing atmosphere. We’ve got a great cast and a powerful story to tell. We’ve got a few major studios tracking us and I think this film will be a classic. It has been front and center but in no way is it the only thing moving forward.

“Locked in a Room” completed final mix and was delivered to the distributor. More announcements there very soon. “Darkest Night” had its first US showing where it announced that it will release in the USA on March 22nd, 2013. I’m told that the S. Korea deal is now underway and I’ve very excited for US fans to see this film. It also took home a contribution award for the bridging of East/West at the FACINE festival in San Francisco. As for “Deadly Renovations” it opens on various VOD networks on Nov. 1st so look for it there or buy at amazon.com, rent at Blockbuster but enhance your Halloween experience:)

Speaking of that I want to thank Nancy Gideon for the wonderful interview she did for her Haunted House online site. It was good to talk about film past, present and future:) Thank you Nancy.

I’m waiting on release dates nationally for “Heaven’s Neighbors” and “Figure in the Forest” after a deal with our rep went South last year. It has been reset and will finally be coming to you on DVD. Also some TV play looks to be at hand so stay tuned there as well.

I’m told “7 Stones” will be done Nov 15th and will play TV in December and I do hope that it does. Also I got to see a rough cut of “Realizism” and it is one funny film. Joe Andersen is one funny man:) “Donors” is in fine editing before moving to music and sound design. I will be releasing the new poster here soon that showcases  Dr. Savior on the poster as well as our female lead Niki Saletta.

“Benjamin” is playing a few more festivals internationally and will be heading for theaters in early 2013. I’ve seen working cuts but I’m anxious to see the final film. Jon Osman was a great director to work for and I think he might just have something special. My buddy Carlucci from “Karma” and “Benjamin” is onboard “Ashes of Eden” and so it will be cool to see him in a few days.

The NEW fort office is structurally sound and while I’m working the AOE production office the inside wiring and walls will be worked on. I’ve been packing up the old fort office and soon the transition will be complete. A new chapter will begin and I for one am ready to attack 2013. We have another paid of biblical era films and Dean Teaster’s “Long Road Home” looks close to financing. I have several other film partnerships underway and I hope they get to be told in 2013.

Well, I’m happy that I had a chance to really fill you all in on my endeavors as of late. I’m a person who loves fall and this thinning of the veil.

Dance ye round the balefire:)

“Darkest Night” Announces US Distribution Tonight & More…

It is the end of a long day and I’m tired. I’ve been doing some major moves on three different fronts. I’m packing up the old office, finishing stuff on the new office and prepping to go into high gear next week before we start filming Oct 29th. Today the final window went in and so it is all enclosed. Oak staircase being put in now and it looks great. I love the rustic and it has that charm. It has been odd packing up all the things at the old Fort but the new office is a big improvement. All day it has also been back and forth on casting, crewing, accounting, flights and prepping for day one of the production office. There will be some PR releases on new cast. We have some new sponsors coming on board as well. More ASHES OF EDEN updates soon.

Tonight in San Fran at the FACINE festival we are having the 1st public US screening of “Darkest Night”! There will be an announcement there which should excite the fans following this film. Next week a PR release will go out on this as well. Also look for some news on “Donors”! “Locked in a Room” also will be announcing our distribution very soon! So excited to have this rolling out to you.

Also it looks like a pair of our biblical films will be rolling into production. A lot of back and forth on that and I still need to read the most recent draft of one of the scripts for “Rachel” (working title). We are locking the “Ashes of Eden” script and it goes to printer tomorrow. It is great to now be able to read and visualize many of the actors. Boy! We have some real talent stepping up on this film. Watch IMDB.com to see who our in front of and behind the camera team consists of.

I’ve had many small trials and tribulations over the last week or so but I am flowing. I’m just trying to do what I can – where I can and not be unmotivated by what I cannot effect at this time. I’m excited to be riding out the year in and around my home town. I’m excited for the holidays that will soon fall upon us and allow us time with our family and friends.

Okay I’m off to catch a few Zzzzzzzzz’s!

Enjoy the weekend!

Piece by Piece – Making Moves

It has been a whirlwind week to be sure with crewing and casting calls before the cameras roll on the 29th of Oct. The hazelnut coffee is flowing and I’m excited that we DO have a sponsor for all our coffee on set! This will be announced soon with all our other business sponsors. What a great opportunity  for them and for this film that will be released into worldwide markets in 2013. We’ve made some great cast announcements as of this morning including the addition of our film’s young lead RED. Who?  Go seek out our ASHES OF EDEN website and Facebook and you will see:)

So I took the day again to work on the new office. We have it roofed but still need 3 pieces of the steel up in the overhang. We got hit by heavy rain today so we put in all but two of the windows and insulated more. I spent quite a bit of time high up on the ladder. Up there I imagined what others who had to work at real heights went through while working. High atop bridges, buildings, Mount Rushmore…

Building on this project has helped me put things into perspective again on how pieces all add up. Enjoying the fall leaves, cool breeze while burning brush in the fire pit. Piece by piece it comes together much like a film:) Or a career. You do a little here, a call there, send this off…it all adds up. I said that early in my career that if everyday I do one thing by years end I will be that far ahead of the next person. Maybe they did one thing that week to help themselves move ahead. Work hard and things will happen.

Other than that it has been gathering distribution materials, setting up some post-prod., licensing TV deals, development discussions and so on. That said, the actor in me is most excited by the story that will soon unfold before us. I’ve produced larger and smaller films but at the core it all comes together the same. A group of artists pooling together their talents. So I plan to do what I do. Make a movie. We have two weeks from Monday before we roll so we will work steadily forward. We will put the pieces of the puzzle into place. Just like the office building – piece by piece. Just like our goals piece by piece. Just like our dreams – piece by piece!

Living our lives – piece by piece:)

Have a great weekend.

Peace!

Distribution & Gearing Up on “Ashes”

MSU is playing on TV. I’m full of great coffee and some breakfast as I make my way through a slew of emails. It has been several days of just classic Michigan fall. I’ve been burning brush from the tree cutters while spending a few days on the home office. It also looks like Monday we will go full steam ahead on “Ashes of Eden”.

I’m excited to see this film launch. It will be a great way to end the year dropping me right off on the doorstep of the holiday season. We have spent weeks prepping for official pre-production so we can shave a week off. As it stands right now we should be rolling cameras on Oct. 29th. It will be a very busy time these next few weeks. If my communication is slower this week please do forgive me. We did just announce a few more new cast members and more will be announced this week. I’m excited about the cast shaping up and you can look them up on IMDB or the “Ashes of Eden” website.

Also we are locking in our US?Canada deal on “Darkest Night” and will announce the street date at our Oct. 20th showing in San Francisco for the FACINE Film Festival. Also final mix underway on “Locked in a Room” to deliver to our distributor. Also “Donors” announced that the music score will be done in Michigan by our associate Dennis Therrian. He also was announced for the post audio/score work on “Ashes of Eden”.

Other than that I’ve had some new sales/distribution folks initiate talks about our products past, present and future. We are also waiting on licensing agreements for a few CDI properties that will be coming to TV. If you own a company and are interested in sponsorship in our “Ashes of Eden” please contact me directly at perrydj@aol.com we have several on board already. I hope you all enjoy the beautiful day and harvest the goods of your past year.

Egypt, Ashes and All Kinds of Updates…

It has been a week of many things in motion and working hard to close them down. It has been a year of assigning distribution and moving things along. I’ve shot a few new films and we have a slew of new films about to launch. This home office has been one of the more challenging things I’ve taken on in many a moons. I’m a tinkering person when it comes to handy work but not a builder. Working with someone who knows what they are doing has been really a great thing. In many ways I’ve said it is like making a film. Smaller crew for sure but many things remain the same. The new FORT will be the hatching place for many new films. Let’s look at a few updates where I can provide one.

First on “7 Stones” they are revamping the sound that was in dire need. It was simply not going to pass any distributor quality control. The drama, the look all great but that sound was lacking. Now they hope to have that all done by mid November and a TV showing/premiere is planned for December just in time for Christmas. Ho! Ho! Ho!

We should have VOD (video on demand) dates for “Deadly Renovations” here soon. “Locked in a Room” is delivering to distributor. “Darkest Night” is negotiating a deal as we speak and so look forward to announcements. “Benjamin” is getting accepted into many major festivals including one now in Egypt. I heard “Realizism” has a rough cut done so that is moving nicely. “Donors” is in post and about to enter sound design/music. I would say we have quite a bit going on.

“Ashes of Eden” has been #1 on the list as of late. We have been doing some heavy castings and are about to announce some new cast members. Behind the scenes work is underway and we are soon to enter our official pre-prod phase and we hope to roll cameras end of Oct. and finish just before Thanksgiving. Our team can go eat large and get to work in post production. This is going to be one powerful film! The film is also on IMDB so feel free to follow along with that.

Soccer season is now over and so film work and winterizing has become the priority. I need to create another wind break/insulate the California Red Wood tree we have growing. We use to bring it inside during the winter but it got so big we had to put it in the ground. It survived last winter and is thriving but it needs the help. The garden has only yielding a bit of a harvest here and there but it is still something I enjoy.

On the acting front I’m excited because we did cast the actress in “Ashes” to play opposite myself. You have to watch for the next PR but an amazing talent. I’m being talked to about a role in Grand Rapids/Holland as well as a line up of 2013 projects. That is in addition to what we have lining up and so I’m excited to end the year strong and get ready for another. So have a hot apple cider and enjoy the season!

Go MSU:) Go Lions:)

“Darkest Night,” “Darkest Night,” “Ashes of Eden”…Updates

Ahhhhh… The first days of fall and my first morning sips of hazelnut coffee taste so good. I have to say we are entering my favorite time of the year. I like to rise to that little chill in the morning and as of late I’ve been rising earlier and earlier. The year of work has been steady with the finishing and distribution of projects. I’ve still got a series of films in post production and so step by step. I’ve been happy that in this season “Deadly Renovation” made it out so that those who enjoy a slight fright can enjoy.

We have been very busy prepping “Ashes of Eden” and I think we are getting close. We have been in talks with talent and crews and this week added Mayra Leal as our young female lead. I love the work I’ve seen from her and look forward to seeing her perform. Our SAG paperwork is underway , locations being scouted and we hope to set official dates very soon.

I’m proud to say that we have a signed deal on “Locked in a Room” and once all materials are accepted At Risk Entertainment will announce the details of the deal. Also I’m happy to say we have an offer we like on “Darkest Night” for domestic (US/Canada) release and we are working to put all that paperwork together. We will be doing an official announcement at the FACINE film festival in San Fran. That showing will be our 1st official US release to audiences.  Stay tuned for ticket info and more on the distribution.

I got to hear that the 40+ minute cut of “Realizism” is looking great! “7 Stones” is still plodding along. “Donors” will soon be moving into post sound/music. Other news is I just got hit with a slew of scripts to read. I got the newest scripts for “Rachel” & “Rahab” that will be our next two biblical era films. I got a script from actor/producer Michael Walton to read with an offer to act. Also several other films working down the development line are looking really good.

I thought about ranting about a few of the lower points of the week in business but they were really small issues actually. I’m having a great morning and so we will pass on pointing out obvious issues in our business that need to be worked out. On another front, the home office is looking great and I’m looking forward to having a new zen place to work from. It will have all my files gathered and organized. I can only see things getting better and better as we enter into the new year. To each of you I hope you have a great weekend.

Creative Endeavors in Motion

In one hour my alumni MSU will kick off against the Fighting Irish. I will take some moments to eat and enjoy the Michigan fall day. The last four days have been dealing with past, present and future. It is a delicate balance between it all. I’ve been working to establish my home base for work and creative endeavors.

My projects have become numerous and I’ve got folders and files at three different locations. I’m going to unify all that once and for all and increase the efficiency of my operations. It has been a great couple weeks as we work on final development for a new film “Ashes of Eden” and deals are underway for several of the CDI library.

I’ve been dealing with a few small issues on one of the films. It is funny how at the end of the day it really only requires good communication to work these things out. I often play the part of the guy who keeps his cool and just looks at the options and choices are made. There are many emotionally charged folks in the entertainment business and that can hinder if allowed. While I consider my passion for the arts to be charged I also think I save most of my high energy for ACTION:)When it comes to business it is usually a step by step deal.  So this weekend I’m helping one associate deal with a film issue and we have been wrapping distribution items up for delivery on another. Every week is revising “TO DO” lists and crossing stuff off!

After much back and forth a few TV deals may be looming.  These deals are only for a few of the films but you will have to wait to hear more on that. I also know “Outside the Wire” is getting ready to make some announcements and updates. We do have a couple of films heading to big festivals for audiences to enjoy. (Benjamin, Darkest Night)

Additional development work has been steady and I can see a busy 2013 shaping up. This year has brought some good filmmaking and artistry to the screen. I’m looking forward to bringing more of these stories to you all out there.

Tomorrow is the start of soccer play offs so that will be fun. The cool Sept winds have been wonderful for inspiring my morning hazelnut coffee:) That sounds like a good idea:) I’m going to sign off likely to have a beer and watch MSU but coffee might still be good!

Have a great Sat.

Getting Hammered and Nailing Who…

Ah Michigan Cherry Coffee is what is flowing today. I went to bed early after another day yesterday of bouncing between biz emails and working on the office. I remember when terms like “getting hammered” and “nailing” had totally different meanings. I was trying to nudge some foam insulation into place and hit my thumb for the first time. I have a purple color thumb that hurts and is quite stiff. The floor layout is in and today we will work on the upper office level. It will be nice to have meeting place/office all in one place. My work has gotten more and more complicated and so this will really help organize as I move to the next level of it all.

I went in and did my final ADR work for the needed scene on “Locked in a Room” and so that can soon be off to the distributor. I’m looking to have VOD places and dates on “Deadly Renovations” very soon here. I also hope to have some distribution release news on a handful of other properties of ours. Stay tuned on all that.

“Ashes of Eden” is plugging away on dev work in hopes of setting official pre-production days and shoot dates. Our target start is in Oct. and things are coming together. We’ve been meeting over crewing and casting and have made some choices. We are about to release our first attached cast today or tomorrow in our second PR release. Dean Teaster is on-board as a Co-Producer to handle all our accounting.  Jesse Low is our 1st AD and has been working our schedule. Eric Procter has been working as a location manager. I also think we are close to announcing that Mr. Dennis Therrian will be involved in our post production will score and sound design. That is exciting to me as he has been our post supervisor on many pictures now and always brings the quality and professionalism I expect.

I’m thrilled at my character work in “Ashes of Eden” playing a rogue who chose a path and upon meeting the film’s lead recalls when he too stood at that fork in the road. Old friends, new friends…We are going to make a great film.  Look for our exciting press release!

I could go on about some of the development projects gaining ground but I will wait until I have more to report. I smell breakfast cooking and venison chili for later today. I need to go get ready for another full day of work on the office. MSU plays today so I hope that is another victory!

Enjoy the beautiful day and be productive!

NEW Michigan Film Opportunities “Ashes” and More…

The last few days have been beautiful in the Michigan. My time has been spent on prepping the new home office and working development on “Ashes of Eden”. Our PR announced the project last week. (See http://www.cdiproductions.com to read story) We’re locking in many of our leads and talking with key crew members. More cast announcements will be forthcoming this week. We will be setting our firm start dates here in the next two weeks. The locations, scheduling and other pre-prod duties are being knocked down now that may allow for a shorter official pre-prod time. As for the other task of building my new “Fort Perry” it has been a wonderful experience so far. I’m excited to have the new space to store old files/paperwork and having a place to meet with all the artists I do business with. It will serve a few tasks just like the old “Fort Perry” did. I want to thank all those who have given a hand in the process this far.

“Deadly Renovations” had the start of its release on the 21st of August and I think a good many folks are checking it out. We’ve had DVD signings in Yuma, AZ that went very well. I’ve had friends say they rented it at Blockbuster and are having watch parties. Others have added to their collection buying it off Amazon. I’m not sure if Netflix has it up yet but they should soon. (Just call the number they provide and ask)  Also what would be a release without the haters:) You have to love those fans. I saw someone with the 50 accounts trying to throw up their (1’s) and a something that passes for a  review. (barely) With a little closer of a look that account shows it is just another frustrated film school grad that gets in the real world and can’t make a film. What? No school to give me lights and grip equipment? No school to provide a sign out camera? Nobody to believe in their script/story? BUCK UP CAMPER:) Welcome to the real world:) You have to sell people on you. Your passion has to push the story. It is like the new STARFLEET grad who thinks they are going to get the command chair on the USS MOTION PICTURE. I guess they’re stunned when they are handed a red shirt and assigned to shuttle crew duty. It’s that “I’m owed something” mentality of many young people today. NOT ALL! Many. I just note that many of those people who carry that negative attitude seldom get a project off the ground. Their personality does not inspire investors to get behind these folks. Investors are thinking, if I don’t like this persons outlook others likely won’t either and chances are the project will fail. Those negative people of course think the investor is stupid and all those who get their projects made are inferior artists.  They spew- if they had done it…STOP. You did not do it. And with a certain bad attitude you will not do it. They are reduced to slamming others work in hopes that the feelings of failure will go away. So try some respect in your life and see where that gets you.  I respect “doers” even if I don’t LOVE their work. I also understand “subjective” which is something many artists fail to grasp. Many times things are not better just different. Some will like this and some will like that. So it was almost fun to see some of those negative folks again like the crazy uncle at the family reunion. Don’t be that guy/girl:)

I want to give congrats to Gabrielle Stone who GPI has chosen to be my co-star in the 2nd Philippine feature “The Beast” to shoot in 2013. She and I have met on another set and also I know her momma. I’m looking forward to working with her and telling some good story.

“Benjamin” is playing the LONG ISLAND FILM FEST INTERNATIONAL

So check out the times and catch it before worldwide distribution!

Same with “Darkest Night” that will play the FACINE festival in San Francisco this fall!

“Donors” and “7 Stones” is post. I have a final ADR session for “Locked in a Room” before we send mixed master to distributor. I can say the deal is signed and it is a great mini-major studio. I’m happy about all this and I hope to have some exciting news to share over many of the other films. I think many of the foreign fans will soon be very happy.

I’m looking forward to shooting “Ashes of Eden” because it will give me the core of a Michigan crew. We’ve got other film projects launching both inside and outside of Michigan. If you have interest in seeing a sponsor package for “Ashes of Eden” let me know. I’m off to look at doors and windows this morning. Last night was a recharging (blue) full moon and I feel great and ready to go forth into Sept. and ride out 2012!

Have a great day and thank you for your continued interest!

Rock & Roses & Ashes of Eden

A beautiful Saturday for drinking coffee, eating some peanut butter toast and organizing my communications from the previous week. It was a week of many happenings – first it started with me finding out about the loss of one of my close friends and business mentors. It continued with some great meetings over “Ashes of Eden” which officially announced this week as well. It is a CDI associated film teaming with New House Entertainment and Ahptic Productions. We’ve been in the scheduling, key casting and crewing stage as well as locking locations. We’ve had some resume’s and reels coming forth and will be announcing some of the first attached cast very soon. I will be playing a supporting character named “Donnie” in the film and that led to a newer shorter haircut as I find the character within.

I see that the French film “Man in Wood” made an IMDB appearance and I hope to have some more details on that film in the weeks to come. On the acting subject – I had an actor who has been touching base over the last year or so contact me upon reading about our next film. I asked for a reel of his dramatic work and he responded by saying it was in the works. I looked back and saw that a previous message had that  same reel “in the works” from December 11th, 2011. Anyone who knows me or reads my blogs understands that REELS are the way we like to work. Show me your “game footage”!! – As talent myself, I hate “reads” and seldom do them. Sometimes a producer wants to see if you can play some nuance of a character that isn’t displayed in your reel. But if you’re out there saying “Why can’t I get any work” – yet your materials are lacking… SIMPLE – If you don’t have a reel you go to the back of the line. IF we watch EVERY reel link submitted for a character and cannot find the right actor we may go to cold reads. So I cite that as an example to help you all out there. Also a past associate messaged me with interest in a department – I said send over a resume. It has been 3-4 days and nothing yet. We are likely hiring that key position next week – so again not being ready will likely get you bumped. So if your career is lagging look first to your materials. Check your coverletters, resume, reels, websites…control what you can control.

This week also saw the national release of “Deadly Renovations” and I’m proud of the team. I had to give a notice to some of them stepping up on the stage with their art for the first time. See I’ve found that you NEVER will make everyone happy. Don’t try. Have a glass of red wine, fire up a steak and toast the success of job well done. There will always be a slew of unhappy actors not hired (check those materials:) ready to throw their frustrated opinions.  Also aspiring directors, producers and writers who so far cannot get their projects produced, script sold or what not. They often see someone else doing what they want and they see green and red. Jealousy and Frustration- a misplaced anger that can lead to troll activity. I say, ignore their frustration and count them amongst your fans. What is Lex Luthor without Superman? I’m just saying, don’t waste your time in a back and forth, defending your art. While someone is trying to rip down your deeds you are developing new projects. You’ll end up getting yet another leg up and those same folks unfortunately get even more jealous and frustrated. Vicious circle of negativity those people live within. I just wanted to awaken some of the team to the rocks that will get thrown along with the roses. That is how some get attention by going against the grain. “AVENGERS” – Hulk smashes Loki – “it was okay – I didn’t really dig how…” WRONG! Scene kicked ass:) Move on.  So I thank all of you that have sent roses and to the rock throwers – I sincerely hope to one day create something that you really like. If you find yourself spewing a pattern of hate, hate, hate…maybe it is your filter/eye and not so much the project. Just a thought…:)

We should have film festival dates soon for “Darkest Night” making its first non-distributor festival appearance in the USA. “Benjamin” looks to wow audiences in NYC again after its first festival showing. Distribution talks worldwide continue on these two projects and so they will find their way to audiences in the near future. “Donors” and “7 Stones” still in post-production and “Locked in a Room” is polishing up for distribution. There will be an official announcement on this in the coming weeks from At Risk Ent. CEO Larry Simmons.

I’m looking forward to making a few exciting announcements on a few biblical era films looking to follow-up on our very successful “Book of Ruth” film. Also looking for some good news on “Long Road Home” so stay tuned for that as well.

OK. I’m going to get back to my Saturday. I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Advance Notice on CDI’s New Associated Film & More…

It is feeling a bit like fall outside and I LOVE it! It is my favorite time of year and today will include garden work, grilling and fire pit. I might even get to starting the new BEER making. Let me give a few cool business run-down.

First August 21st is the official release of “Deadly Renovations” on DVD so get to amazon.com or your favorite retailer and give it a buy/rent. I hope you all enjoy the film. The critics have been enjoying it and so I’m very happy it is releasing. We are also in talks with the UK for a release.

“Darkest Night” will screen at the Filipino Arts and Cinema, International (FACINE) film festival has accepted and will be screening “Darkest Night” as a part of its film lineup. The 14th annual FACINE festival is slated to begin in late October in San Francisco, California.

“Donors” trailer will be releasing very soon! The back and forth final negotiations on “Locked in a Room” are almost complete. We are looking at a good release on the film domestically and once I can spill the beans I will. “7 Stones” still having final audio work done.

For those who subscribe here to the blog you get an advance news on “Ashes of Eden”. CDI has officially associated itself with filmmaker Shane Hagedorn. I will be producing and playing a very cool character in the script. It is best described as an “Urban American Graffiti” both gritty and inspirational. This week a more complete press release will go out including some teaser art. We’ve been in talks with locations, scheduling and looking at cast and crew. Cameras are planning to roll this October. Old friend Dominic from Ahptic Productions is our DP and I’m excited to be working with him again after all these years. “Knight Chills” was the last time we collaborated with one another. Stay tuned!

Many deals underway for TV/rights sales on the CDI library of films. Also financing on a string of biblical/inspirational films is almost complete. “The Book of Ruth, Journey of Faith” has been selling great including now being available at Wal-Mart. If you see it snap and email me a pic to perrydj@aol.com .

I think I’ve covered much of what consumed my week. In addition development continues and I see even more films getting ready to roll! I’ve read script(s) (more still to read) and may play a few acting roles in other projects shooting at the year’s end. That is IF I can work the schedules. OK. Well off to more coffee and some breakfast. From there a wonderful day of getting things done at the homestead!

Have a great weekend!

“Green Goblin” and NEW “in associations” for CDI

The rain has been falling like crazy playing catch up for the poor crops here. The garden will surely drink all this up and we should have more harvest soon. We’ve been having a few tomatoes ripen here and there and so those are being enjoyed. We broke into the first bottle of the “Green Goblin” our fall harvest wine from last year made with green tomatoes and ginger root. It was a hit at our dinner party save for my mother. She’s picky – what can you say:) As I was told recently – at least I know where I get my brutal honesty.

I’m here to announce that CDI has entered into “an association” deal to develop and produce a feature film with local Lansing filmmaker Shane Hagedorn with his New House Entertainment. The working title is “Road to Eden” which may or may not remain – but we’ve been having all the foundation meetings to put key elements into play. This project will provide a chance for a mix of old CDI guard and new upcoming folks to work together. I will be producing and playing a role in the film. I was not expecting to dig on this one character as much as I did. Sometimes a character jumps off a page and right into your head. So we will be doing an official PR release this week but you heard it here first.

I also did a read on “Kinship of Death” the TV pilot to shoot after Thanksgiving and before Christmas in the Philippines. I was so surprised and really excited about bringing the character to life in that show. He is a cool antagonist and I think it will showcase a new side of me while also playing to my strengths. If network numbers are strong we will shoot an entire season early 2013. I hope to have some updates on “Darkest Night” here very soon for fans out there.

“Deadly Renovations” in 10 days – August 21st so get your copy on any of the various retail outlets. Blockbuster is one of the newest additions. I’m also hearing that an in-store signing will happen at THE HASTINGS video store in Yuma, AZ with director and producer. Here is a good interview I did last week that centers on “Deadly Renovations”.

“Locked in a Room” has isolated a distributor deal they like and are doing some back and forth to get all parties happy. It is a good company and will get a strong push. This will announce very soon so hang in there.

I’m hearing the wildly popular “Benjamin” has been invited to participate in another major festival –  29th annual LONG ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL. September 18, 2012 to September 29, 2012. Stay tuned….”7 Stones” is still in final post, “Donors” still in post – “Realizism” now in post – some good pics coming forth now. I still have had a little drama from certain members of that team but I’m trying to just write it off as just inexperience and leave it at that. These kids will find out that the world doesn’t owe them and everyone doesn’t always win. Things aren’t always  followed by juice boxes, cookies and pats on the head. A few of them I will likely see on film sets, maybe even ours – but more than most will realize the harsh truth that few will work in this industry of ours.

I still have the new draft of “The Beast” to read and another Philippine script with an acting offer attached. I also have some work to do on “Road to Eden” pre-prod. so I think I will draw this to a close and get back to some work. Thank you one and all for sharing your morning with me.

Blockbuster Release and Business Updates!

What a solid week it was for business and such. I love my Saturdays sipping coffee and giving you all a peek into the life I lead. I’m often one for just staying focused on what I need to do and not engaging in too much outside back and forth. My last few blogs that centered on the film “Realizism” (the default title since director Mitch had his hands tied on that issue) whereas I was ASKED to point out things that I saw that could be improved upon. I’m happy to see from the high traffic that the words were heard. And if those words help one or two students move to the next level – great. Job done. If some read only what they want to read – and take their own skewed  meaning – I can’t control that. Anyway – they wrapped principal photography and I think we put some professional work down on camera. They had a wrap party yesterday and I hope they do pat each other on the back but also look at where they could improve.  I was told that my words of truth offended a few people. Well, we self evaluate every shoot and look at what we did right. Those things often  become policy and what could be improved upon is noted without hurt feelings. These kids will be moving to the real world and I hope they are ready for a different set of challenges.

We’ve been in full speed ahead mode for distribution. “Deadly Renovations” is getting some good reviews and retail buyers are taking to the film. It releases August 21st and this week saw us get picked up for online/in-store buy with BLOCKBUSTER. We will be bringing you VOD information in the coming weeks.

“Locked in a Room” is in negotiations and I’m excited about the release being put together nationally on that film.

“Darkest Night” is negotiating US/domestic offers and working some foreign deals. In one of our meetings I was told of the wide South Korea release being put together. Also a Philippine theatrical where they are talking about me going there to promote the opening after Thanksgiving. While there I will be playing the bad guy in the TV pilot for KINSHIP OF DEATH.  It is their AMERICAN HORROR STORY and it has a network time slot and if ratings are good we shoot the 1st season in early 2013. I also got the new script for “The Beast” which is the next GPI/CDI feature film.

A new CDI associated film has been in the works and next week we will have some announcements. I will be helping one of my peers produce and playing a role in a powerful story. I’ve already got some major interest in the soundtrack and have started distribution talks. This month is development, next month starts pre-prod and October should be our shoot month. We’ve started some initial cast and crew talks while we finalize our company deal. Stay TUNED!

I’ve also had a good amount of interest in me participating in upcoming film roles. I’ve had casting directors from the west coast in touch with me this week. I’ve also had some direct talks with directors and producers. Many options.  What is meant to be will be. But it looks like I will stay in the USA for late Summer/Early Fall and end the year in the Philippines.

We do have some great development films that have been submitted to funding sources and we are awaiting word. So 2013 is being planned now. I look forward to bringing fans/audiences more stories. I wish each of you a great weekend. Enjoy!

In the Jungle the Tribe Marches

I’m back at home sipping the hazelnut coffee and watching some soccer on TV. I have to say the past week of shooting was exhausting. It was a combination of many factors which I’ll get into a little bit to share some of my insights with you all. This will be especially helpful if you are just starting out in the film business but I think  it will have some good insights for all. First I will tell you a bit more about the project. It is a program ran by Grand Valley University whereas they do a film with students intermixed with professionals. I was approached by the director Mitch Nyberg on set of “7 Stones” about participating. I liked the purpose of the program and myself tried to spearhead a program at my alumni university – Michigan State. I ran into politics not at the top but at the bottom. The professors from different colleges who just could not get along or agree. Film covers a vast spectrum and doesn’t fit neatly into one college or department. Egos are large in that arena and ultimately a program that I feel was superior to all I’ve seen was mucked down in politic mire. Not the first time we have heard of that.

Producing a film can be fun but it is not a game. It is a complex weaving of business agreements that align artists towards a single goal of telling a story and having the proper releases to make it a business entity. IF you are in one of those management positions you have to take it extremely serious. If these roles are not filled by highly motivated and organized individuals the project will fail or at best be like a horse drag over broken glass. On this projects the cracks of disorganization were there from the get go. Like I told the program and film director – this is not an everybody wins community recreational project. This is a program to attempt to prepare students for a chance to make it in the professional film world. 90+ % of these students will end up at TV stations or other smaller media positions that are a far cry from their initial dreams of working in our industry. There are no grades in the real world of filmmaking. No B, C, D – just pass or fail. I had inside info from the director on the state of things and secondly I know. I mean after producing 40+ projects in all formats, sizes and genres – I know. You can’t BS me and if you try I will call you out. If I had a dollar for every time on set I heard “I assumed” I would have doubled my pay. Every student should have been given or required to have a clip board, pen and legal pad. Pre-production meetings were obviously lacking as departments were not always on the same page. Furthermore producers are not hired shoppers. I saw problems that were only solved by spending and then trying to cut corners elsewhere. When you are attached to a learning experience the community participating via sponsorship or gifted use of vehicles, locations, services or products should come easy. You have to get off your ass and make contacts, shake hands, give out biz cards and make the deals. I didn’t see that – I saw them trying to go back to pre-made deals and try to squeeze talent costs. I hate to say it but that doesn’t usually work in the real world. You can’t make a deal for say Martin Landau and then go try to nix his pay because you can’t go get craft service sponsorship. Also contracts are real legal agreements and in the real world there are consequences and they are often costly ones. The hit to your reputation can be worse than the damages from legal actions – as I write now the Grand Valley Film Program is in breach of contract and working on a speedy remedy. They are in breach because of lack of organization. I truly love these kids but see that I had a passion for this industry that some of these kids lack.  When I was struggling there was not any film programs like this one available to me. We had to produce up everything. When I see lazy or lack of self motivation it really strikes a chord. I’m a nice person but many in our industry are not very forgiving. Honest mistakes happen via unforeseen events and the best of the best ANTICIPATE these events. Others create issues by “assuming” which as the old statement goes, will make an ass of you and me. Don’t assume! Know! Define! Eliminate gray areas and anticipate!

Technically the folks all worked very hard. They were 20-25% slower than a seasoned crew but that is just a learning curve. I think we captured some great magic on camera and I’m very happy about that. How many will take their errors, setbacks and failures and use them to propel them forward? I don’t know. I saw some fixation on things that created an issue versus just rolling with things. Filmmaking is a TEAM effort. A well oiled production machine is like army ants on a march.

I discussed some of the silly university politics around film titles and such in an earlier blog. The attempts at censorship really runs against the grain of artistic expression. I saw where a little bit of the University BS tries to tie the hands of the production. If the goal is to try to create a real world work situation than the sanitized, overly cautious  attitudes of the few need to go away. Marketing and promotion are real aspects of filmmaking and even though this project is more for festival and limited release – practice as if you are working towards worldwide distribution. You ultimately play how you practice so the program really needs to look at this as a model to professional production/distribution and not a summer camp. Now I always said, I always counted on folks being slack ass so that I could outwork them – And I did.   In summary – I appreciate the opportunity and knowing the reputation that we’re given here in Michigan (this holds true for entire Midwest) as being assbackwards. I’ve realized as a MI resident who works mainly outside the state or in other countries that in some ways, okay many ways – WE ARE! I don’t want that reputation and those who have worked on a CDI produced project where we were the parent company in control – know we work hard to not make that our reputation. Sure. We’ve made mistakes but it has to be about wanting to be better. The willingness to work harder to make things better vs the easiest path. The doing just enough or more often not enough. When that happens it is like the human body. If you fall into reactive mode it is like a virus or disease running wild through the body of the production. PREVENTATIVE is always the way to go. It is an Eastern vs Western medicine approach and I think my martial arts background helped me blend ideals. A surgeon knows the task ahead. He has anticipating several possible negative things that could pop up. He has equipment on standby should this or that happen.

Also accountability. IF you are in a position of monitoring for and addressing issues immediately – you must monitor all departments for accountability. I see a lot of friendly friendships that doesn’t allow direct brutal immediate corrective decisions. I’ve become friends with people who started as associates. First came respect for someone who worked hard and took accountability. From that friendships grew because we were interdependent with one another and these were FILM WARRIORS! They worked tireless to make sure the ship was SHIP SHAPE! So when you raised a drink at wrap with ship safely in port – friendships form. But I’ve gotten serious and firm with everyone I’ve worked with at some point and I would say that 98% of them know it is because I care about the ship and all of us on it. Usually if someone is messing up they know where that is happening and accept responsibility and correct it asap. Why? Because it is a TRIBE. One department affects the whole! Each department should strive to be the best they can be. That in turn inspires other departments. An AD will know exactly where a lag is and try to define the issue slowing things up. A UPM works tirelessly to prep for the days ahead. I saw a UPM on this last project who worked hard but was acting like a Key Set PA. They were swallowed in the NOW so how can they prepare (preventative) ahead? The answer is an external office apart from the chaos and getting stuff done. The producer if not needed on set should be taking care of things forthcoming and making sure with the UPM that everything done is business sound.

I think that many will grow from this experience. If you get offended by this blog you are one of those who will likely be working public access TV or not in this field at all. If you take it for what it is – advice from someone who has been there done that on various continents in various genres with various artists who are awesome – you will grow! I collect the daily resumes. I deal with the vendors, the distributors, the marketing departments and  as a younger man I didn’t 100% grasp that paying your dues statement. I do know now. I’m excited for the select people out of that student crew that will make the cut and join our ranks. We are the business artists. This is our tribe. Not everyone is welcome. If you don’t pull your weight or take pride in your work and work for the collective whole – move on. That is the heart of motion picture or TV storytelling industry. I always get slightly offended by outsiders who always think they could easily be an actor or crew member. That is like saying anyone could jump on a boat with a few folks and win the AMERICAN’S CUP (Boat race). So if you want to make it. I mean really make it. You have to give it your all. I’m here to tell you if you can be happy doing something else – do it. I’m speaking to those artists that have no choice. This is their calling.

DO IT!

IN OTHER FILM NEWS

I was just informed that http://www.darkestnightmovie.com will get a wide release in S. Korea.

http://www.deadlyrenovations.com releases nationally on Aug. 21st, VOD in Sept and is for pre-sale now!

“Locked in a Room” has an offer on the table that we like and so some back and forth will be happening with the N. American rights. More once a deal is done.

“Benjamin” had a great NYC showing and distribution will follow shortly I’m sure. The interest is already there it is finding the deal that feels right.

“7 Stones” stuck in post audio BUT it needed it. The film is too good to have poor sound so I say take your time and do it right.

Several new film projects about to finalize either in acting, producing or both. Internationally I’m still in talks on films in France, Mexico and Morocco. We will see. Also a few home state Michigan projects brewing so again students could be finding their way to PA positions if they have the right attitudes. Some guys may find their way on to grip electric teams because they impress the right people. HINT: David Lowing helps me crew up most of those departments and I trust David. He knows who hustles and who constantly disappears and is never to be found. So I’m excited about http://www.cdiproductions.com as we expand into more international work. I’m also excited by opportunities to film right here in Michigan.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. And if some of the G.V folks are reading this – hustle on my learning amigos. You could be our tomorrow storytellers and I’m here to tell you the road is hard. Only those with the deepest wells of passion will survive.

I hope to see you in the jungle. The Tribe marches!

Goofy University Politics & Freedom 35!

The news is full of the tragedy caused by one individual. I guess you can conversely look at the good each of us could do if we set our mind to it. I think that is why I like telling these stories so that you can first entertain and then educate. You can sometimes illustrate such important life lessons in a way that really touches folks. It is one of the reasons I so enjoy what I do. I’ve spent some time on the last few blogs discussing some of the issues facing folks working in the entertainment field in the smaller markets. As you all know I’m acting in a project for Grand Valley University that puts seasoned vets with students. Their project’s working title was “Realizism” which was totally  confusing and really missed the mark. As someone who often deals with distributors and marketing folks I can tell you it was just a bad title. Well, a better title was agreed upon and that was “Strippers” a bit of a tease to the dirty minded. Actually the script has NOTHING to do with pole swinging ladies. It is about a Robin Hood like gang who strips foreclosed houses of valuable resale items. Some university person is giving the director a hard time over the title which has already gone out in PR releases and such. WHY? That would be like someone saying they need to change the name of the toy cowboy “Woody” in TOY STORY because it makes people think of hard penis’. So I think the college needs to police their own to make sure no locker room buggery if being covered up and not worry about a film title that could have a “naughty” meaning if taken out of context. Maybe they should stop RUSHING because that could also mean a sniffing drug or illegal running in the school halls. Or how about TA (Teaching assistant) because that could mean tits and ass. Or School Spirit could be about occult, dark magic and ghosts, better lose that. HIGH SCHOOL – a place of getting buzzed or high…I think whomever is complaining has an issue of sitting around waiting for any trigger to distract them from their work and flood them with images of “NEXT UP ON STAGE, IT’S CANDY!” (Cue Motley Crews “Girls, Girls, Girls”) So whomever it is I would call them out in a heartbeat in front of the largest college body I could. This is college and the arts – so please. Just get your dollars and go contribute to some dancing girl college funds you misguided fool.

OK. Freedom 35! Anyone who knows me well knows that “The Trailer Park Boys” is one of my absolute favorite comedy shows. It is from Canada and not for minors. The long short is I’ve taken DVD’s of them to many film sets and converted many into fans of this little show that became the #1 comedy in Canada. I communicated with the director and got permission for my character to wear a logo sweatshirt in the “STRIPPERS” film. It was a very cool gesture on Mike’s (Director) part and I thank him sincerely. To me the TPB are the 3 Stooges of our era. Check them out and prepare to laugh!

Many other deals still underway which could have several projects filming over the next few months. I’ve been in talks on a few other acting gigs including the one in France. I heard yesterday they are attaching me so if the business can come together I could be Paris bound. I also have a meeting coming up where CDI with their GPI partners will produce a pilot for a TV series in the Philippines that is in the vein of “American Horror Story”. The pilot has been greenlit and they want me to play the antagonist shooting a couple of days when I’m there at year’s end to promote “Darkest Night” into Philippine theaters. I’m waiting on the script but it sounds great. They would shoot 13 shows back to back in Feb. 2013 or so for broadcast.

We have been gearing up hard for “Deadly Renovations” heading to Netflix (save it now) and other retailers in late August. Some get the film on the 21st and others the 27th. I’ve been told VOD will be in September. We also might have a forthcoming announcement on the 1st foreign sale.

I think I will leave you all with this info to chew on. I report to location tomorrow and I have packing to still do. I’m ready to have a great time filming “STRIPPERS!” I said it! “STRIPPERS!” Some people just need to pull their head out of their backside just enough so they can see where they are going. I think I owe Dave Borowicz’s dad a royalty dollar for using his line:)

Have a great weekend.

Marketing, Magic Ruby Slippers and Michigan!

What a good week on many levels for me. I’ll sip some of my favorite coffee and reflect with you all. I decided to accept an offer to do a local Michigan project that is being done in connection with a university. It is a project that gives students experience and exposure to a professional world of filmmaking. I have to say I am deeply concerned on many levels about the future of filmmaking in our state. I ranted enough on the casting situation in Michigan last week, which in many ways is ass backwards. I saw more examples of it this week. For some I don’t think it is a desire to present poorly. It is just our entire environment is not accepting of the next level of film work. It is why in years past people would outgrow this market and be forced to move to another place. With the technology we now possess the country/world is becoming smaller. You have to believe in what you are selling. If an agent doesn’t fully know, understand and process this worth into a proper pitch they revert back to the one size fits all shoe store approach. The talent needs to be realized by the agent as a hand-made unique, special, magical pair of shoes – like ruby slippers or LIKE MIKE’s magic basketball shoes. You would have to sell 10,000 or 100,000 pair of average shoes to even come close to a pair of the above-mentioned special shoes. So if agents can’t get over the shoe store mentality they should at least become the seller of odd, unique, special, one-of-a-kind shoes. I can assure you the +10% will be much higher and you won’t have to do a mountain of paperwork.

The local acting union rep was approached to handle this university film program. When the programs information was brought forth to the rep they pushed the wrong agreement. This agreement had previously been used in years prior but still it was the wrong agreement. If you distribute the film for profit it is this agreement, if not for profit the one proposed would be fine. My question was why would someone push an agreement that puts already struggling actors on a “deferred” type agreement? If this agreement was used in past years whereas they did distribute the film for profit – why was this not adjusted? I can tell you those actors have monies due to them. If nobody brought it to anyone’s attention – Let’s stop there. I heard that the response to the notice of the wrong agreement attempted to be used was “If we get attention – we’ll renegotiate.” This is the person entrusted with the job of fitting the right project with the right agreement? Why would someone push an agreement that doesn’t pay talent up front and has no benefits of health and pension or residuals? There is more work associated with the next contract up, which requires deposits and more paperwork. Why do you think an employee on likely a straight pay would elect to take the easiest course of action. Again the same rep pushing the same agreement when confronted with the info that the wrong agreement was being proposed responded with – “Why not just accept donations for viewings or DVD sales?”. Again the situation calls for an obvious different agreement yet still the wrong one is pushed, why?  Also this is in an environment whereas the students are intended to learn the correct process. There is a reputation given to our local acting union and I’ve never spoken badly about them, but I see now where this stems from. This is the office responsible to work on behalf of our local talent. Put that with the one size fits all agent mentality and the casting director’s common view of talent as cattle – It doesn’t make me mad but it does make me sad. I’m not on a witch-hunt. I don’t want anyone’s job or head. I just want people to put in an honest effort and do things right so we can work to eliminate the backwoods reputation that people attach to our state and film industry. I think the project is now non-union because so much time was wasted and wrong information given. Good preventative action always outweighs reactionary fix it actions after the fact.

Now let us bullet point some updates –

–       The casting for the next GPI/CDI Philippine feature “The Beast” is underway. We are continuing our distribution discussions over “Darkest Night.”  Actresses meeting the requirements should submit!

–       I’ve been working on our “Faith” slate with Reel Frog Films and I think we will have an entire slate in production including Dean Teaster’s next feature “Long Road Home” which was requested by financiers this past week.

–       “Deadly Renovations” is going up for pre-sale and we will keep feeding you these outlets.

–       I’m waiting on final word on another film slate that CDI will operate as the production entity. “Soul Eater” is first on deck and it includes a series of western films.

–       Development talks to match the right project with the proper opportunity continue.

–       “Benjamin” is working distribution after a great NYC screening.

–       At Risk Entertainment and CDI have been evaluating distribution deals for “Locked in a Room” and I       think we will have something soon!

–       I’m looking at acting offers presented that extend from now to 2013.

–       CDI Commercial is working towards a few deals including a great “Making of” deal.

Lastly, I promised a little bit on my next acting role. The film has a working title of “Realizism” but I think I might start calling it “Strippers”. I play a colorful character Manny who I’ve been describing as a rogue with a heart of gold. The drama has a strong comedic edge to go with its serious message. Mitch Nyberg is directing it. It will have me working with some old friends and new ones. I film in a little more than a week and I’m excited to be working with my old friend the camera again!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! My best to each of you and your endeavors!

“The Beast” Casting Call, Michigan Woes and More…

My mornings are still coffee but my days have been water and cold green tea. We’ve been going through gallons and gallons. I just went out to water the garden and even at 10:00 am it is HOT! I use to think as a young man I did well with the heat but I think it was because heat always brought the sexy girls out and about in their sundresses and bikini’s. Now I have to say I enjoy the cool temps more. I can always throw a sweatshirt or coat on and boy do I have a collection of coats. I guess I have a sickness like women and their shoes.

The entire week save a few meetings have been watching Daphne recover from her surgery (Going great) and getting organizational work done. Many deals that have been being worked are looking to be close at hand. Let’s explore some of that but first I want to talk about MICHIGAN. The Woes of Michigan…

I am without a doubt a huge fan of Michigan. Born and educated here and full of pride. I like to think we are known as industrialist folk with a direct friendliness. Our film industry was forever at the near bottom of any lists for productivity in film. Than we had the incentives and that was a rush as the larger entities took an interest in our State. Many rushed to suck upon the teat of the new industry. A big complaint is that local talent on both sides of the camera was not respected. I think that lack of respect is even heavier when it comes to MICHIGAN talent. Now I want to be very clear that as talent I’m national, I’m international BUT because I choose to live here among my lifelong friends and family some use that to try to reduce my value. I work more out-of-state or country unless it is usually a CDI project. As someone who communicates daily with entertainment folks from other states/countries, I often try to raise up our image. I know I can speak for our teams of people in saying that we are a unified team and we work towards a unified goal. I see that many casting people here in-state don’t fully recognize and respect the talent. This leads to insecurity in talent that manifests in bad egotistical ways. Agents also are so afraid of rocking some boat that they don’t push or sell their talent. They are playing a numbers game to try to steal crumbs from the floor. It seems the term working smarter vs harder is not in the vocabulary around these parts. I work in production and I know the in’s and the out’s of this business. The worst deals I ever make are in our own state because again some people don’t realize that one bad talent can tank a scene. Sometimes it can be worked around in post and often it cannot. It has even happen in our films before and you learn. I respect the people who are artists seeking longevity versus 15 minutes of fame. I have to say the last few years the Michigan scene has been very disappointing. I can say that! I am Michigan through and through. I’ve spent countless hours self teaching/studying the business. I’ve taken on mentors and picked their brains for insight to their success and failure on endeavors. It is horrible when I encounter people who are working in positions that are clueless to the process they are expected to execute. Michigan has a long way to come and I’m not surprised many people from other hubs were brought in. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have talent it is the fact that the talent (both sides of the camera) are not being packaged and sold properly. DP’s reduced to 2nd AC’s, AD’s working as production assistants and  talent grouped together and sold as a one size fits all. Until these internal workings are corrected the industry will still stumble. In this pool of understated talent I see many struggle for pecking order in this small pond. These are all just observations and opinions but I think I’m about to use a pair of terms in talking about Michigan that I’ve NEVER used. Lazy and Uneducated, it hurts to even say them. I damn well know that is NOT everyone and if it doesn’t apply to you – you know. And you have the work to prove it. I did say WORK not No# of LIKES or BS popularity STARMETERS. Work! Show me the movies! We at CDI cast off reels and most producers do. So next time you hear “They don’t want to see reels”…OK. Red flags! I cast and get casted and it is almost always off REELS.

Speaking of reels, CDI is entering into its 2nd associated project with GPI in the Philippines entitled “The Beast”. GPI is doing a National casting for one of the American female leads. I was the male star of the previous film “Darkest Night” and I count it as one of the best experiences of my career. Here is an article and the rules to submit. HINT! Get your reel ready!

Some BIZ BULLET POINTS

– The “Benjamin” premiere in NYC was a big hit and if audience reaction is an indicator we may have a hit. A MI showing may also be upon us.

– “Deadly Renovation” can now be pre-ordered on amazon.com for an August release so GET IT NOW!

– We are looking at distribution offers on “Locked in a Room” and “Darkest Night”

– “7 Stones” is back in for audio re-mix

– We have several projects in development that might be moving into PRE-PROD.

– I’ve gotten a verbal deal on a film shooting at month’s end playing a rogue with a good heart. Paperwork should be all signed up this weekend. I will discuss more at that point.

– I’ve had a few scripts I’m reading that come with offers. The possibility of filming in France in August is getting more likely. Not sure how the end of the year will roll out but stuff is starting to really roll now.

I hope that everyone out there is taking the steps to beat the heat. Whoever said Global Warming is all myth should maybe take another look at that stance. I understand corporations wanting to squeeze more dollars by dodging EPA but come on! I loved a story I saw today whereas 90% of landfill garbage can be used in a plasma process to create energy. There is not an issue with profit just align it with something that benefits mankind. OK. I’m off my soapbox:)

Be safe and enjoy the weekend!

Reflections on the Journey

OK. Well as some of you might have read yesterday I woke up fresh and early on my Bday and wrote a very deep thoughtful blog. I tried to attach a picture and I lost it all. It was snatched my techno gremlins but I think it was to teach me some lesson. Basically,  It was reflective ramblings about my journey. The basic gist of the post was that I’m at peace. I don’t feel I have anything to prove to people in regards to my art. Once long ago people use to laugh when I said I wanted to be a film actor/filmmaker. This journey has taken me to remote waterfalls in the Costa Rican jungle. I’ve sipped whiskey and listened to the hauntingly beautiful call to prayer sounded as the sun fell beneath the Ooty mountains in India. I’ve felt the power of tropical storms slam the mansion of a mango estate in the Philippines. I could go on and on and so I feel blessed that I believed in myself. I pushed on when I felt like quitting.  I feel good in knowing that if I was to pass on from this life,  folks could spend a week or so exploring all the art I’ve helped to create. I’ve done what I set out to do. The fan mail from different countries telling me of their favorite film and how it touched them moves me deeply. Now I look ahead and think of the many more stories I’ve yet to tell. I’ve been visualizing on the next 8 years and what more I will look to do. It has and will continue to be an exciting journey. I implore you all to stay the course on your own journeys. The rewards of touching others with your art is beyond words.

Now that my Birthday has passed I have to say it was one of my best. I was with some good people from different stages of my life. Friends from my days as a martial arts instructor, old school friends and soccer mates. The CDI Tribe was represented of course and so overall it was just a great day. I was also so humbled by the online wishes from all of my dear friends, fans and peers. Thank you so much to all of you and I look forward to working with many of you again. To all the fans – thank you so much for your support. I’m inspired to do these films for all of you. I will continue to give you everything I have when the camera rolls.

One film update I will include is…

The premiere of a wonderful film I did in NYC called “Benjamin”.  Here is a posting I received for the 1st showing of it in NYC next week.

June 29th at the Lighthouse International Academy Theatre for the first showing of “Benjamin” by Director Jon Osman and Starring Carlucci Weyant Niki Saletta Robert Miano James Russo Richard Perry Alma Saraci Yang Miller Melissa Ferraro Richard Mazda Erol Tamerman and more Part of the 6th Annual Manhattan Film Festival. For Tickets, go to www.manhattanfilmfestival.org. More Information plus trailer to come.

Today I took the day to relax and appreciate where I’ve been and where I plan to go. I will be back at it Monday working on my long list of TO DO’s. Right now I think I need a small nap before we have an epic soccer battle against the league champs. I promise I will have many great film updates in the coming weeks.

Enjoy your Sunday.

“Be real and get the deal”

Again I want to take this moment to thank of all you who take the time to read my blog and share it with those who are trying to make their way in this artistic industry of ours. It was one heck of a week and I will try to update folks on some of my adventures. I will say the garden is doing great save the fact our puppy decided to chew the garden hose in half. Today will be a day of getting the yard and garden cleaned up for Father’s day tomorrow. We are having him over and so with the exception of rain possible it should be a good day.

Last night I went to my 1st ever poetry reading. It was to see my girl read with several others in their group to honor their mentor. Mentors are very important in our business and working and getting advice from those who have lasted is so needed. I’ve talked before about some who want their 15 minutes of fame. I see social networking is full of LIKE this and LIKE that and people whose egos ride on a star meter or number of friends. None of this will be as helpful as seeking out those that have been there and done it. To get those gems of wisdom on how they got their foothold and the secrets to longevity. The power of the art will and should outshine the popularity contests at functions and now online. In casting we never look at number of friends or the often corrupt star-meters on IMDB. If you have little to no credits save glorified extra work and no reel to show do not expect to get treated like a star. Many of these massive mutual LIKE groups just come across as desperate computer hackers. Non-working actors who spend more time trying to find an easy path versus the real path of work hard to get the work. Followed by work that begets work. We use the database to show cast/crew lists to distributors but the once great database has lost so much credibility to real producers that it is kind of sad. So I say, focus on the work and the PR buzz comes second. Don’t be in the “Fake it to you make it” club as 99% of those folks will fail in their endeavors. “Be real and get the deal” that is the motto I would replace the previous with.

It was a very inviting reception in Saugatuck, MI for “7 Stones” which I’m very appreciative of. A welcome on the signs with my name was appreciated but a touch odd as I am only one of many great artists on that film. I was not blown away by the projection system but appreciative that it was donated. Also the film still needs some major audio mixing before it is sent to distributors but that is part of the learning curve for the new young company that CDI associated with. Overall I think my co-stars home town enjoyed the drama unfolding on-screen and I am proud of the product.

Early that same day the Philippine horror film “Darkest Night” played for a handful of distributors in Hollywood and more had screeners sent. We will see now where the offers come from but I think it was a success in that the interest is there. What deal is to be made is yet to be seen but I’ve heard that it gave some good exposure to some very talented Philippine actors/crew. I look forward to returning this fall for the launch of the theatrical run and in the Spring to shoot “The Beast”.

One of the best Bday gifts might be the funding of a film slate where I sit as a Production head with CDI there to help execute production. They chose a handful of properties to put on their slate and the first SOUL EATER could get full green light at month’s end. That would see MASON from “The 8th Plague” back in action in a prequel.

Dean Teaster’s next feature “Long Road Home” is also close to launching after a deal was put on the table for distribution. This Faith Drama will be a good next feature for Dean Teaster and I fully expect that to shoot late Summer/Early Fall if schedules allow.

A TV Division has been developing and we will soon be announcing some updates here. A couple of projects are in development and one series has Jeff Kennedy’s name all over it. He and I need to sit down and discuss so until I do I cannot put too much out there. All I can say it that it will be way cool and the path to production is clear.

I’m told we are closer to a start with the “Henry Ford” project as they attach the director. I would say that this directors is relatively well-known and worth the wait:) CDI is handling all the behind the scenes materials and so it will be a good project for me on both sides of the camera. I’m slated to play a major supporting character opposite an A-List talent that many will know. I’m looking forward to throwing down in this powerful drama.

I’ve got 4 directors and 1 producer call lined up for today so even while working about the Bluetooth will get some usage. My plan is to solidify these films so I can move out of the business phase and into what I feel I do best.  That is, bring the character to life! I’ve had some communications with folks this week about the SHOW vs the BIZ and how they intertwine with one another. It is a delicate balance but once you get that balance you will see more doors open.   I’m going to hop off here and get to my personal and work business. That is another balance that we all must achieve in our lives to be successful.

I want to thank Brother Max again for his sponsorship product. His hot sauces and BBQ sauces get much use and exposure at my various grill N chill meetings and personal hangs. So if you like natural ingredients in your sauces look at http://www.gourmetfoodandproducts.com/ .

Enjoy your weekend one and all!
