Darkest Night Release and Get your Reels Ready!
Good morning to all you readers and dreamers out there. The birds are chirping and the heat seems to have broken. I’m sipping my favorite morning beverage and I’m going to give you a few little updates. It has been a good week that actually brought many new opportunities. The hard part is really finding the time to give the attention that a new lead or contact needs. Let’s see where to start.
I’ve been working to finalize delivery on some materials for the German distributor and it has been slow but I have to relax and realize that not everyone does business at a neck-break speed. We in America do often get caught up in the NOW, NEED IT NOW. I work hard to relax and have patience and succeed more often than not. Pace yourself and keep your stress low and watch how happily things get done. I’m waiting on a Fed Ex # from them and it feels like waiting on Christmas.
Parables network has been playing FIGURE IN THE FOREST and decided to hold back on WICKED SPRING for a few. They are paying their licenses so that is all good with me. I do want more audiences to enjoy the film but as I stated up top – all in time.
I met with a director from the UK on a possible acting role and it was a nice meet N greet. I did see the pains that aspiring actors go through with the waiting rooms, the nerves and such. I really don’t have any of that because I know the next role will come. It’s all a matter of schedule, business deal and a strong match between director and talent. Schedule may be the biggest issue on this project if it doesn’t work out but I do hope it does.
I’m putting a deal together now for an acting/producing job and it is really about just waiting on the Michigan rebate. I have had many great talks with the director in L.A. and if it all comes together many local talent will get some work out of it. HINT – We will be casting off REELS so get yours around.
I had some other talks with an old associate in Hollywood about collaborating on a series of films. I had discussions about licensing some of the CDI library to a theatrical indie-house in Michigan.
“Ashes of Eden” released a teaser poster but a really nice one is in the works as is the trailer for distributors to look at. I’m very excited about this film. The balancing of dialogue is where we are at and I do believe color correction is also happening as we speak. Look for a premiere in Michigan at year’s end.
Development on a few other properties are showing lots of promise and it is exciting to see others taking a strong interest in the scripts.
“Supermodel Showdown” TV series is moving nicely and we had some great creative talks over editing this week. We are starting to pull our marketing package together and we have many interested parties wanting to see what we have. I think it will be a great show for fans of reality shows.
Other than that we can take a few moments and talk about organization. I’m going to say I work very hard to do this in all my endeavors and I still make errors. It really irks me when others just do not take the steps to do things right. It leads to wasted time which = wasted $ which often results in getting just barely what is needed versus what could have been gotten under better circumstances. It’s horrible when someone or a group accepts payment to do a job that ultimately they aren’t qualified to do and royally screws the job up. I’ve been in the knowing on a project that several months back I was asked to consider a CDI association with. The initial offer was buried and never brought forth to the powers that be. When a second offer was discussed the fires were already burning. I politely declined. This makes the 2nd production offer I’ve declined. Collecting a paycheck is always nice but how much will you accept to do something foolish. Jump off a bridge, run into a burning house or try to take an inflatable raft across the ocean – what is your price? I declined an acting offer early on also (same project) and it was because their offer reflected their mismanagement of cash. Mistakes are rarely alone and they often happen together in a reactionary fashion whereas if you don’t fix the main issue it will only get worse and worse. When a film starts to fall behind schedule you must find the source issue and fix it. If not it spreads and can become a nightmare. Leadership is KEY.
Speaking of nightmares – Darkest Night is fully released in the USA/Canada and is selling well. This film wasn’t without issues but most were related to mother nature. I’m so proud of this film and the fact that we’re showcasing some wonderful artists from the Philippines. I’ve noted before what a wonderful experience it was with the people there. Music, laughter and cultural exchange of ideas and views – food and festivities. Please do take the time to rent VOD or buy the DVD in support of this film. If you watch it at night I promise you a few chills and thrills. I know Amazon has both DVD/VOD but you can get it at Google Play and many other rental and retailers.

Polite, Professional & Film Proud
I’m up early and drinking the hazelnut flavored coffee. What a busy but exciting week. My birthday celebrations have been dragged out due to various schedule issues but they will conclude on Sunday at my father’s with a cook out. A few new items for the office, new soccer gear and many well wishes and wonderful food. I do feel sincerely blessed by all the great people I have it my orbit. I thought orbit would go with my trip around the sun analogy. Let me see what events from last week might allow some of you to gleam a bit of wisdom? Ah yes.
I had a couple of offers that the business of it just didn’t quite add up. When this happens you still want to give total professionalism and grace when you bow out. I also started at square one and I never forget that. My 1st starring role in “In the Woods” was no pay up front. I slept on the directors couch and it was a great first dive into the world of filmmaking. That said, my aged bones enjoy a bed and a quiet place to work lines. And I also need to only consider paid work as my bills don’t take deferred pay or revenue from producer net points:) I know that some of these filmmakers will do their film, grow and move to bigger projects. I encourage them and let them know I look forward to meeting up with them further down the path. It is a small world this business of ours and you should always been polite and professional.
This week we put “Ashes of Eden” in motion on sound, music and color correction. “Supermodel Showdown” is moving along nicely. CDI Distribution that handles CDI and CDI associated properties closed 3 licensing deals on films for release in Germany, Austria, Switzerland. Congrats to “Locked in a Room,” “Darkest Night,” and “Wicked Spring”. We also now have release dates for Parables TV in July for “Figure in the Forest” and “Wicked Spring” so look up the schedule on http://parables.tv/ . This July is also the US/Canada DVD/VOD/TV/Internet release of “Darkest Night”. I’m very proud of all the Philippine artists that will have their talents exposed to US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and soon many more territories. I’m also proud of our Civil War drama “Wicked Spring” that is finding yet a second life during the 150th anniversary of this horrible war. It truly has moved into the realm of “classic” within the genre. I hope that “Figure in the Forest” will also move to that status in the years to come. I think that is the best compliment any piece of art can get. Reports of spiking sales on “Book of Ruth” are abound and we’re working hard to do more films of this nature.
As the 4th of July weekend comes upon us be sure to use caution. I use to be a fireworks fiend but these days not so much. I made it through my crazy teens and 20’s with all my fingers intact and both eyes so I will call it good. It was brought to my attention that sparklers burn so hot they can melt gold. Who and when did this become the ideal things to give young children. I never liked them because they sparked and burnt your arms. I just find it funny that parents give children these. They do create that cool outline in the air so I will give them that. OK. Well that is all I have for today. It has been a crazy week and I may have some forthcoming news on upcoming projects but nothing ready to share yet.

Pre-Birthday Reflections, Being Reclusive and New Films
So today is the cusp of the BIG MOON, the closest full moon of the year. I’m sipping the hot coffee and looking forward to the day hanging with my brother and his girl. Upon finishing this post I’m getting the smoker going and going to have a relaxing day. It was a crazy busy week as many have been lately and I’ve just continued to sail the ship forward. “Donors” http://www.donorsthemovie.com film has moved to Yuma for final sound mixing. “Supermodel Showdown” is looking great as we are chunking in footage on the 3rd show and I’m extremely happy with what I see. “Ashes of Eden” is having the sound/music review meeting next week and also starts color correction. I also might have a few upcoming announcements on projects the start of July. Final approval on German distribution contracts for three of the films underway. “Darkest Night” PR is in full swing next week as we head towards our VOD and DVD/TV releases in July. I want to discuss a few attributes that apply to activity this week. It also ties in to what we discussed last week.
KNOW YOUR ROLE
I’m in a stage of possibly signing onto a couple of films as CDI associated producer and talent. In these situations you must first stand your ground and use your experience. IF someone wants to work with you it is because they are buying your experience. The things you’ve done right and wrong. To avoid pitfalls and follow well-traveled paths whereas they will maximize your chances of repeat success. What I look for always in a partnership is LISTENING. I can tell if the cup is already full of ideas and thoughts often based not on experience but opinions. Opinions are like assh%#%! everyone has one and… You know the saying. I try to base my decisions on reason, common sense and some gut feeling. I always try to fully explain the reasoning. If someone isn’t listening and you can tell – that relationship will be a painful one that will mostly bring frustration and regret. I avoid these situations because if you want to make mistakes or non calculated risk decisions, I would rather not be along for that ride. I’ve been there, seen that and got the T-shirt:)
Now for a film crew to work effectively or any group dynamic – each person must know their role and respect one another. This is even more important with your above the line executive team. I have one project that is close to a go and I’m set to be the ship captain (producer) but before we set sail the ship needs to be ready. First and foremost is for WRITER, DIRECTOR and PRODUCER(s) to know their role, their scope of power and how decisions will be made. I’m very good at this and that is why I do the business I do. I respect and enforce these divisions otherwise chaos will grow. Chain of command is very important and especially where writer and director are concerned. Once the script is handed off the new creative leader IS the director. Business decisions from a producer can trump but only if they are legit and not subjective opinions. I’ve written screenplays and for me it is easy to let go. I think it is because the actor in me surrenders to a creative director and I just focus on my role. As a producer I watch the ship and make sure that the overall vessel stays the course. But as a writer I’m flattered and inspired when someone adapts a story of mine from the page to the screen. A writer too close to the material can become a nightmare and slow a project, killing schedule and budget over subjective topics. I always tell my producers when they get caught line stepping that it appears they are heading for the directors chair BUT this is not your ship. So I address these issues right up front while the ship is in port. I don’t wait until 2 weeks in when so much frustration has built and the tensions are high. I will risk someone saying this doesn’t look like it will work, I will readily agree with them. I’m not getting on a ship that is going to become a floating emergency out at sea. As I stated before too many people will bite their tongue and say nothing because they need the work that bad. I would rather stay and work the garden, brew some beer and sell some films in our library versus going on a nightmare cruise to shit island.
This week I also met some artists with one of my friends filmmaker Nathan Quinn. I’ve actually met quite a few of the artists growing in Michigan after several years of being semi-reclusive. I’ve just been away from the film social scene because honestly I can’t take the fake sincerity and one-up attitudes I often observe. Do you art and be unique. Do so with the least amount of drama save what you put on-screen. Always give more than what you were paid for. Don’t compromise your best and be willing to let a project go knowing the universe will bring to you what is meant to be. Find your faith and hold on to it. Don’t EVER grab for the dangling carrot and become someone’s puppet. Many have wondered why I won’t work with them. If you bullshit you will lose my attention almost immediately and seldom do I revisit these folks. Many act on their best behavior when they want something but it is only a matter of time before their true nature returns. Take a deep look at yourself and see if these traits exist and if they do – sincerely, spiritually purge them from your self and live as the best you that you can be.

NEW DJ Perry Reel & REcap for the Week
JUNE 1st! I woke up this morning and got the fresh pot of coffee going. I did the 1st of 3 interviews for the upcoming release of “Darkest Night”. I’m excited that this story is going to finally release here in the US/Canada. I won’t go on and on about this film as you will soon have many interviews to read and also the film itself. The end of the week has been rain, rain, rain which is great for the new plants in the garden. Let’s get right to some FILM NEWS!
ASHES OF EDEN rough cut is done and we are doing a producers watch on Tuesday to make final notes before Shane Hagedorn makes his final passes on the film’s edit. I’ve seen the scenes individually and I’m beyond excited. The scenes are POWERFUL and I’m so proud of all the artists involved.
DONORS is almost done with the music and so that film is closer to being ready for release!
CDI Distribution team is closing in on several deals for films in the CDI library. It looks like “Darkest Night,” “7 Stones,” “Locked in a Room,” and “Wicked Spring” are heading to Germany. We will be working to finalize that deal this month! Stay tuned for other territories!
“Wicked Spring” and “Figure in the Forest” should be releasing this month on Parables Network my contact is saying.
“Supermodel Showdown” TV series is also looking great. I think it gives a fun, honest look at what goes into a REAL reality show.
This week was great on the development front. I read a few scripts as an actor and I should be making some decisions on summer filming here soon. The picture is getting more clear as I go. On that note – David Gries is working into the tribe here at CDI. I’ve explored his on-camera work this year and we’ve been working on a few projects together. I’m most appreciative for his opinions and work in helping me put together a 3 min sizzle reel that I wanted for a few opportunities. I sent the reel along to a few professionals yesterday and I will share it first on here. Enjoy. This is what actors use to showcase themselves and their diversity. It gets so hard because you end up with so much material. What stays? What goes? So I want to thank David for his help with this.

This month will bring great growth and I will continue to move forward on this journey step-by-step. I encourage you to do the same. Don’t look at how far you have to go and let doubt sink in. Just take that step. Take that next step. Soon you will realize how far you have actually gone. Life is a journey and not a destination so enjoy it. You can’t enjoy a breakthrough without setbacks. You can’t have satisfaction without some frustration. You just want to try to keep your balance and tackle each issue as they come. From the struggle always comes growth.

Partnerships, PR & Primates
What a week! It was a bit crazy but now as I sit quietly sipping my hazelnut coffee and listening to the birds outside sing – all is good. The crazy really wasn’t all that bad just some things left up in the air while other people continue some predictable patterns. By that I mean like in any venture you will have partnerships that click and others that just do not. For some people it’s an ignorance issue whereas they don’t know better and they act foolish. Others know or should know better and yet they still act foolish, that is stupidity. Now foolish is one thing but sneaky and self-serving is another and trust me we have a lot of those folks in our business. I had to deal with both the ignorant and the foolish and while I think the first can be corrected through education and patience – the latter is pretty much a lost cause. I don’t regret either of these ventures (I’m going to remind myself I said that) as both are learning experiences. The bottom line is I’ve worked with some talented people but sometimes they become their own worst setback . Furthermore it affects others and at the end of the day it is not worth it. I’ve gotten where I pass on many project.. I’m beyond the magic of seeing myself or a character on the screen and so it has to be interesting and fun. By fun I mean I’m not afraid of hard work but if you are having fun the work seems less a burden and more a challenge to get to the next step. I’ve been around so long in this business that I can often spot the BS in moments. It is a fine tuned meter and I use it well. I’ve been fooled before but that just helps to fine tune.
Funny last week we talked about people boosting IMDB Star Meter’s, faking where they live, faking what they are doing or who they know – the whole “fake it to you make it” mentality found almongst the sea of wanna be’s. I saw a great documentary film on primates and male alphas. It is a natural way that non-alpha’s try to compete by faking their importance. It is funny how many of these traits I’ve seen in people around me. I think I’ve always walked my own walk. I’ve always been the organizer, the peacemaker and draw my self-importance by being true to myself not by working to get others approval. I guess for a few people they earned a bit more patience out of me while I realized they were really just non-alpha primates trying to gain peer acceptance. It doesn’t help their cause and still puts them in a weak light. But I guess they can somewhat hide behind their own weakness. A slave to genes.
Our CDI Sales Team has started talks with many countries over licensing. We’ve got offers which we have counter offered on. I think once Canne ends around the 26th we will finalize many of these deals. It is work but quite exciting to be in more direct control of the product.
Lot of good PR going for the July release of “Darkest Night”. “Deadly Renovations” and “Locked in a Room” still selling. I’m looking forward to “Benjamin” having a mainstream release later this year. I’ve entertained a few acting offers this week. I’ve read at least one script that I really liked so we will see where that develops.
I’m hearing “Figure in the Forest” and “Wicked Spring” will release on Parables TV in June. That will be nice for the old B-day month.
The week also had us doing some great clean up to the yard. I’ve been working on the garden fencing and today might be some mulching and such. I had invites to a film showing and a party around the Motorcity Comic Con and pending the energy levels after a day of yard work we will see. Both are an hour away in opposite directions. Tomorrow it is back to battle on the soccer field and I’m ready to rumble. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Costa Rica TV Show, Coffee and CDI Television
Coffee, coffee, coffee…I really do love the taste first thing in the morning. It has been a good and busy week. I wish we were onto some Springtime but it will be here soon enough. My mind is on the garden and what to plant this year. I’m also close to a second go on some beer making. The previous was like FOSTERS and this is a Killian’s Red variety. I will also be doing another wine. If the lilac flowers bloom hard maybe I will do another batch of that. I think its easy to tell I have grilling and chilling on the brain. It is also a time of planting new seeds that we will be talking about this time next year. Let’s look at some of the up’s and down’s that make up the weekly issues.
Special announce here – The reality show I did in Costa Rica has its legs under it. It has a famous producer waiting to view the final product. The show is being digitized to hard drives and editing is soon to begin. Look for an announcement here soon including the new CDI Television division.
“Donors” is having some amazing music composed for it. This film is about organ stealing and after the watch I can say it will make some people think twice about their actions.

Also we saw a release about the talks we are having with director Sergio Myers about ‘The 8th Plague” prequel “Soul Eater”. I can say that we are looking at locations and trying to find the second part of the funding.
“Deadly Renovations” is out there and seems to be doing good. I will say that our partners there are late with their 1st report. This is never a good thing and something that all distributors need to get serious about. Our sales company made a few TV sales and I was doing accounting. It is not fun work but it is what is required. I had done business with this company many years ago. They sold and paid out but the numbers were low. Now many years later they have a larger division handling bigger budget films. This is a test run back with them and so far I’m not happy with this reporting. In this age people talk. I had at least one call this week that resulted in two parties not doing business.
“7 Stones,” “Darkest Night” and other films are run by foreign sales companies and TV networks. More and more CDI Sales is dealing with direct selling because of lackluster effort by some companies. Not all of them I will have you know. We’ve had a few people who are doing their job and doing it well.
We have a big event coming up in April for “Outside the Wire” our non-profit doc film that follows kind donations in the US to orphans in Afghanistan. CDI Sales is now an official ambassador so if you have a company or wish to donate to this great non-profit be sure to contact me.
I’ve been in talks on a few acting projects. One film pushed as they try to get all their loose ends tied up. I’ve got two others that I’m in talks on. I think they are both great roles and only time will tell. Other than that I got my tax info in to my accountant. I continue to organize the new office and I’m looking forward to the year ahead.

Dog Cuddling, Coffee Chugging and Making Stuff Happen!
Happy March & hello weekend! Dog snuggling, coffee chugging and a reflection of the week past. We had some falling snow and some cold chill but that just encouraged indoor work. It was a week of many good advances in this crazy career of mine. To answer one person talking blogs – yes. I would start with a free blog and build from there.
It is a process of moving forward. It is about getting pushed back, fallen tree’s across the road and indecision about path and direction. Sometimes a project is financially getting by and sometimes getting ahead. Doors always open with new advances.
This week saw us looking at the 1st resume reels coming in for a film we plan to shoot Spring/Early Summer. A few submissions did not quite fit the breakdown but close. We are starting with children casting first and will move from there. We do have very high standards on our projects and I think we will find our gold in time. More updates will come to you all on this “Yet to be announced” film.
I got to see the opening credit sequence for “Donors” with temp music. It looked great and after meeting with composer Dennis Therrian last night I know we will have a very intense thriller that plays with your head:)
“Ashes of Eden” is about at the 1/2 way mark on editing. Very excited about this project as Shane and I bat notes around on the cut. Look for some more promo this month.
I think I made mention of a TV division that CDI is soon to announce fully. We have some exciting developments going on here. So stay tuned! One project was shelved and is finding new life.
“7 Stones” is going out to more of our TV contacts. It was devised as an hour TV drama. I’m excited to find our partners on this film but it looks like it will find its way onto more MI TV also.
“Outside the Wire” doc is having a big Owosso, MI event happening in April. I will give more info on this as we get closer.
I had a lot of wrap up business this week with our two films “Wicked Spring” and “Figure in the Forest” that our CDI Distribution licensed to Parables Network.
This week on the 7th is the OFFICIAL RELEASE of “Locked in a Room” so if you want a late night scare make this film part of your programming.
This week it was announced that we will hold off until July to release “Darkest Night” the Philippine nightmare! I’m excited to get this out there and “The Beast” that will be the follow-up.
I’ve been having some agent talks as of late and getting ready to go film “Somnium” that shoots later this month. It is a very good script and I’m looking forward to working with all these artists to tell this story. I’ve had a few others reach out on acting roles so we will see. Our development of properties continues.

Advanced Casting Notice and Updates
What a busy week. I’m sipping some coffee and reflecting upon the week and I’m smiling. Scenes are being knocked down on “Ashes of Eden” and it is rewarding to see those pieces of the puzzle coming together. We are on schedule and soon we will start to release more promotional materials as we move along the post-production line. As we work on the edit and the distribution flow another film “Donors” is even closer to the finish line. Locked picture is about done and sound design has been underway. Now it will come to Michigan for music scoring.
I’m excited about the March releases of “Locked in a Room” and “Darkest Night”. Echo Bridge Entertainment did an early “Locked in a Room” release to Google Play and we debuted in the top 20 with #12 being our highest. We were shoulder to shoulder with several studio films so we were very happy. “Darkest Night” will release on March 22nd in the USA and than we are going to release in Asia with South Korea likely being the first Asian territory.
“The Beast” will be the follow up from the GPI/CDI collaboration and GPI has been doing some casting as they adjust their filming plan. I think “Soul Eater” may shoot 4th quarter this year as well. That deal may be close to closing.
“7 Stones” is starting to shop international and domestic TV. That brings me to another announcement that CDI will soon be announcing a TV line up. These properties will be developed with TV play in mind. We have relationships with various networks and these will create some new business on those fronts.
I’ve been having meetings over “Rifle” a western I’m involved in but that may not be the only film in that genre launching. Yes. That is a tease and so stay tuned for more information on this.
We will be doing a call for ACTOR REELS here very soon. It will be for certain characters in a breakdown. So if you don’t have your reel together this is a hint and a half for you to GET R DONE. Damn. I think I owe Larry the Cable Guy a dollar.
Talks with several foreign distributors are also underway. We are licensing our films directly on some international fronts. It is an exciting time here at CDI and with so many new doors opening it truly is hard to keep up.
I’m in talks about a possible film role in April. I’m contracted to be in the film “Somnium” in March. May looks like it will be camera time also I just have to make an important decision on casting. Which role do I want to play. There are two different characters in this film. Both are powerful and have different vibe and character arc. So I plan to refill the coffee cup and take another read this morning. I have to get that settled within myself so I can move forward. It is a WILD time:)

Empty Cup and Inspirations
SNOW is a large force of nature in many folks day. In Michigan the Great Lakes gave us some protection and so we have a beautiful blanket but a reasonable amount. I’m sipping the hot coffee and giving all of you a little update before I put in two days of work on the new office. We are going to finish up the electric on it and this past week was organizing my desk and added another bookshelf. Last week was a cautionary tale told as a tribute to an old friend. This week is vastly different. At Collective Development Inc. http://www.cdiproductions.com we have engaged in working with other promising filmmakers. We go into association and use our experience to help others emulate the success we’ve had while trying to help them avoid our past errors. This usually works only as well as someone listens. I will say that some of the associations become the foundation of long-term maybe lifetime collaborations while others are the first and last. I’m very focused upon this task of storytelling. I will ultimately only work with the same. I will first talk about one of these collaborations. ‘Locked in a Room” directed by Larry Simmons. By his admission the film was going to be an exercise and he expected it to be a few rungs higher than a student film. When we first talked I told him I don’t play. If we did this we did it right. The proper marketing and PR, high prod value, distribution friendly cast and worldwide distribution. We had professional differences of opinions on occasion but all done with respect. He discovered how much more BIZ work was involved with SHOW+BIZ. He knew a lot from the music world BUT film is audio, music, fx, color correct, quality control – so many more layers than just audio and LONGER! Ten 2 min songs is 20 minutes and we are dealing with just under 2 hours of product. Many people can manage a short be it narrative or commercial but a feature is another beast. I think Larry learned so many lessons that he will carry over to our next projects. That said, I was so proud of Larry. We finished the film, shopped the film and now Echo Bridge Entertainment has released it. They have a studio level distribution set up to handle Lionsgate and Miramax material. They released us a touch earlier than our March 7th release and boy did it come out with a bang. Google Play is becoming one of the new powerhouse venues pushing instant downloads. We came out debut at #20 and it has moved to #12. This painful piece of art so many hours to create is now in the mix with major Hollywood releases and standing its ground and climbing. It is scary as I saw people in the theaters hiding and yelling at the screen:) More than just the exposure and profit that can follow Larry is a role model. Not just to his kids as a man following his dream but to many aspiring filmmakers. This nice write-up is in celebration of black cinema and those that create it. Even more Larry can stand as an inspiration to other filmmakers in Detroit, MI be they black, white, asian, hispanic, middle eastern – doesn’t matter. STORYTELLERS are one TRIBE! The haters will come out as they are as sure as the Northern star. My script is better. Why can’t I find backers. Those who feel left from the limelight. Smile and keep moving I say. I like the old saying that if someone comes with their cup already full I cannot help you. Many are not open to listening. Listening is not weakness it is wisdom. A common question I get is from people who want to work with me/CDI. Be a good listener. Be a doer. Don’t come with your cup full to the brim – I will have nothing to offer. I don’t like to spill.

A pair of biblical features following the success of “Book of Ruth” is close to pre-production.
Westerns are certainly on the development slate. After “Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town” released to #1 western rental for 7 weeks, top 10 for 17 weeks. This film has grossed well over a million dollars with Lionsgate and we are looking to recreate this success. Soon it will be time to strap on the gun rigs again!
“Ashes of Eden” editing is going great. I can only say that this film has dynamite dramatics. Check out the trailer teaser if you want a look. A lot more on this film as we get a little further down the line.

Welcome December – Film Updates
Welcome December! The hazelnut coffee is flowing as I reflect on my week. Of course we have been straightening the ship after our ASHES OF EDEN voyage. One last paycheck gone astray in the mail, photo releases and a few last signatures on paperwork. A few communications with distributors letting them know our status. This project is working its way into post-production and I expect a finished film around May 1st, 2013.
I’ve been unpacking and finishing the new office. My soccer buddy Brian was over to help with wiring and finishing some insulation. Maybe some work today – all that is very close to being complete. It will be a great place to plot and plan future endeavors.
Either last night or today (time zone) the film “Benjamin” that I co-starred and produced on will play in Egypt at Cairo’s International Film Festival following its sold out showing at the Big Apple Festival in NYC. I hope the audience connects with it. It has a beautiful message in it.
There are new trailers forthcoming for “Darkest Night,” “Locked in a Room,” and ” Donors” and the 1st two have distribution domestically and will be coming to audiences in 2013!
“Book of Ruth” is finding new Holiday outlets like Meijer stores and I believe Wal-Mart. We also are about set to roll into pre-prod on two more biblical era films. One that I likely will play a kind-hearted lead and the other a ruthless military general. Needless to say I’m excited about that.
Dean Teaster’s next film “Long Road Home” set for 2013 is also closing in on financing having already gotten a distribution deal.
TV deals on two of my films is about complete. We need to clone the masters. Stay tuned for the press release on this. The CDI Distribution Sales Team should be up and fully operational in 2013 here. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the library getting out there to even more audiences as our network becomes larger.
I had the immense joy of talking to a director on one of our CDI associated projects who was approving national artwork. He had such kind words basically saying that I saw a potential that he did not at the time. I wanted things ran professional because we would get distribution. And we did. And a good company as well.
Distribution is the path to success because it is a mass media but if the masses don’t see it – it fades away. That is the one thing we can assure with our products now and many cannot achieve that. I’m excited as audiences get to watch the collective work of the artists involved.
I’m proud to say “Deadly Renovations” will be coming to all my Viking friends via Eventity Entertainment on VOD so be on the look out and CHEERS!

“ASHES” Wrap & Present & Future Film News
Again I sit in my cozy chair sipping the hazelnut coffee and pondering the past and future. I’m happy to say we brought “Ashes of Eden” in on schedule and within budget. I had barely wrapped when the holiday was upon us. I’ve been fighting to get my sleep patterns straight after a month of “battle”. I’m very happy with what I saw and I will go to battle with some of them again I’m sure. Next stop is post and distribution. There has been a lot of praise and such tossed about from the shoot but what I saw was film professionals acting like film professionals. It all starts with management and trickles down to keys and all the way to PA’s. (Product assistants) It was one of the smoothest film sets yet and that is dealing with cold and such. I wanted to really showcase Michigan on both sides of the camera. But that proof was also up to the artists to provide. I’ve worked with some amazing people in this industry and taking pride in the work is the key. As I get older I just have zero tolerance for dramatic conflict causing B.S.. I think the key is to isolate and not feed into it. It is also something you cut away on future endeavors. I tell people I’ve made friends in the industry but it stems from respect and hard work. This is not a popularity contest nor strut walk of artists. It is about the individual who can blend their art seamlessly with others. Conforming to a single directorial vision all within the confined parameters of budget. Overall I think we had a great group of artists – I look forward to working with many of them again.

“Darkest Night,” “Darkest Night,” “Ashes of Eden”…Updates
Ahhhhh… The first days of fall and my first morning sips of hazelnut coffee taste so good. I have to say we are entering my favorite time of the year. I like to rise to that little chill in the morning and as of late I’ve been rising earlier and earlier. The year of work has been steady with the finishing and distribution of projects. I’ve still got a series of films in post production and so step by step. I’ve been happy that in this season “Deadly Renovation” made it out so that those who enjoy a slight fright can enjoy.
We have been very busy prepping “Ashes of Eden” and I think we are getting close. We have been in talks with talent and crews and this week added Mayra Leal as our young female lead. I love the work I’ve seen from her and look forward to seeing her perform. Our SAG paperwork is underway , locations being scouted and we hope to set official dates very soon.
I’m proud to say that we have a signed deal on “Locked in a Room” and once all materials are accepted At Risk Entertainment will announce the details of the deal. Also I’m happy to say we have an offer we like on “Darkest Night” for domestic (US/Canada) release and we are working to put all that paperwork together. We will be doing an official announcement at the FACINE film festival in San Fran. That showing will be our 1st official US release to audiences. Stay tuned for ticket info and more on the distribution.
I got to hear that the 40+ minute cut of “Realizism” is looking great! “7 Stones” is still plodding along. “Donors” will soon be moving into post sound/music. Other news is I just got hit with a slew of scripts to read. I got the newest scripts for “Rachel” & “Rahab” that will be our next two biblical era films. I got a script from actor/producer Michael Walton to read with an offer to act. Also several other films working down the development line are looking really good.
I thought about ranting about a few of the lower points of the week in business but they were really small issues actually. I’m having a great morning and so we will pass on pointing out obvious issues in our business that need to be worked out. On another front, the home office is looking great and I’m looking forward to having a new zen place to work from. It will have all my files gathered and organized. Creative Endeavors in Motion
In one hour my alumni MSU will kick off against the Fighting Irish. I will take some moments to eat and enjoy the Michigan fall day. The last four days have been dealing with past, present and future. It is a delicate balance between it all. I’ve been working to establish my home base for work and creative endeavors.
My projects have become numerous and I’ve got folders and files at three different locations. I’m going to unify all that once and for all and increase the efficiency of my operations. It has been a great couple weeks as we work on final development for a new film “Ashes of Eden” and deals are underway for several of the CDI library.
I’ve been dealing with a few small issues on one of the films. It is funny how at the end of the day it really only requires good communication to work these things out. I often play the part of the guy who keeps his cool and just looks at the options and choices are made. There are many emotionally charged folks in the entertainment business and that can hinder if allowed. While I consider my passion for the arts to be charged I also think I save most of my high energy for ACTION:)When it comes to business it is usually a step by step deal. So this weekend I’m helping one associate deal with a film issue and we have been wrapping distribution items up for delivery on another. Every week is revising “TO DO” lists and crossing stuff off!
After much back and forth a few TV deals may be looming. These deals are only for a few of the films but you will have to wait to hear more on that. I also know “Outside the Wire” is getting ready to make some announcements and updates. We do have a couple of films heading to big festivals for audiences to enjoy. (Benjamin, Darkest Night)
Additional development work has been steady and I can see a busy 2013 shaping up. This year has brought some good filmmaking and artistry to the screen. I’m looking forward to bringing more of these stories to you all out there.
Tomorrow is the start of soccer play offs so that will be fun. The cool Sept winds have been wonderful for inspiring my morning hazelnut coffee:) That sounds like a good idea:) I’m going to sign off likely to have a beer and watch MSU but coffee might still be good!

Blockbuster Release and Business Updates!
What a solid week it was for business and such. I love my Saturdays sipping coffee and giving you all a peek into the life I lead. I’m often one for just staying focused on what I need to do and not engaging in too much outside back and forth. My last few blogs that centered on the film “Realizism” (the default title since director Mitch had his hands tied on that issue) whereas I was ASKED to point out things that I saw that could be improved upon. I’m happy to see from the high traffic that the words were heard. And if those words help one or two students move to the next level – great. Job done. If some read only what they want to read – and take their own skewed meaning – I can’t control that. Anyway – they wrapped principal photography and I think we put some professional work down on camera. They had a wrap party yesterday and I hope they do pat each other on the back but also look at where they could improve. I was told that my words of truth offended a few people. Well, we self evaluate every shoot and look at what we did right. Those things often become policy and what could be improved upon is noted without hurt feelings. These kids will be moving to the real world and I hope they are ready for a different set of challenges.
We’ve been in full speed ahead mode for distribution. “Deadly Renovations” is getting some good reviews and retail buyers are taking to the film. It releases August 21st and this week saw us get picked up for online/in-store buy with BLOCKBUSTER. We will be bringing you VOD information in the coming weeks.
“Locked in a Room” is in negotiations and I’m excited about the release being put together nationally on that film.
“Darkest Night” is negotiating US/domestic offers and working some foreign deals. In one of our meetings I was told of the wide South Korea release being put together. Also a Philippine theatrical where they are talking about me going there to promote the opening after Thanksgiving. While there I will be playing the bad guy in the TV pilot for KINSHIP OF DEATH. It is their AMERICAN HORROR STORY and it has a network time slot and if ratings are good we shoot the 1st season in early 2013. I also got the new script for “The Beast” which is the next GPI/CDI feature film.
A new CDI associated film has been in the works and next week we will have some announcements. I will be helping one of my peers produce and playing a role in a powerful story. I’ve already got some major interest in the soundtrack and have started distribution talks. This month is development, next month starts pre-prod and October should be our shoot month. We’ve started some initial cast and crew talks while we finalize our company deal. Stay TUNED!
I’ve also had a good amount of interest in me participating in upcoming film roles. I’ve had casting directors from the west coast in touch with me this week. I’ve also had some direct talks with directors and producers. Many options. What is meant to be will be. But it looks like I will stay in the USA for late Summer/Early Fall and end the year in the Philippines.
We do have some great development films that have been submitted to funding sources and we are awaiting word. So 2013 is being planned now. I look forward to bringing fans/audiences more stories. I wish each of you a great weekend. Enjoy!

Irish Love and a Few Life Lessons
The corn-beef and cabbage cooking and coffee is flowing and today is a good day to be Celtic. Yes. Scottish/Irish on one side and German/English on the other I believe. The St. Patty’s Day has fallen on a Sat. and with the summer-like weather in Michigan we’re having an outside day of it. Bon-Fire, beer and burgers and later the corn-beef. It has been fun getting the yard and garden ready for the new planting. Bottling of the “Green Goblin” (Read earlier posts) will happen soon. I have a beer batch to try following that. The month was one of promotion and looking at projects both in development and submitted to me to act in. I cut about 5 inches from my hair in prep of soccer season and the coming heat. I’m excited about the projects ahead and development has also been moving steadily ahead. Let me see if I can give a few good updates but 1st let’s talk about – WORK!
Many people on the outside view our industry as fluff not realizing the intense work of developing, funding, executing and finishing film projects. I understand but still feel slightly put off when people just throw out the “Hey put me in a movie”. Yeah, because it takes no real skill or development to do what we do. BullSHI*! I would say that I work very intensely to get done what I must. I wouldn’t say “Hey how about you let me weld that ship panel in place” or “I’ve never coached but I can take over team for a week or so”… – you get my point. Ship may sink and team will lose but then again many folks think that TV/Film is done in a matter of hours or days. People are still surprised when I say a 12 hour day might get 3-5 minutes of a film done – rough footage only. Let me remind you that this is with new tech equipment unlike the old days and earlier. Have you ever spliced film together?
I’ve found some people want to say “I’m a filmmaker. I’m a director.” but don’t like to do the work. They are often quick to schedule showings and set unreasonable deadlines and act surprised when they fail to meet them. It does happens BUT this is something that must be corrected in good time or they will not last. It is like an actor that is often late. They won’t be around long because at the end of the day it is work and the weakest link can hurt the whole. Also a recent example which I will not highlight with a name but includes finger-pointing at the artists under them and FIBS. First if you are in a position of power it is your responsibility to motivate, manage and make sure things move along. If not it is YOUR fault. Sure you might have less dedicated artists and they should not be hired again. That said, if you hired/brought them onboard that = your responsibility. Also with filmmaking and other folks $ the executive team must deal in truth. The good, the bad and the ugly. If someone drops the ball you are the bigger person by admitting that. I’m still surprised at the people who would rather blame someone else than accept responsibility. And if they will fib on something small they will easily fib on something larger. It is a major issue with me and speaks volumes about character. My advice is be organized and focused – do your work and motivate/manage positively. A good leader will cover honest mistakes by accepting responsibility for the team, apologize and work twice as hard to remedy the situation. Some people do not know this lesson and will struggle in life because of it. Enough of the behind the curtains of the Great and Powerful Oz – onto updates on projects that have made strides. Just try to recognize how much work actually goes into your favorite film or TV program.

– A “Donors” trailer will be forthcoming likely at month’s end or start of next month.
– I’m hearing Hollywood showings of “Darkest Night” will be in May so marketing materials can all be put together upon the completion of the film.
– The followup CDI/GPI film will be “The Beast” and a Philippine director has been chosen by Russ Williams – I need to read new draft of script this week.
– More “Secondary Heroes” location photos are being taken in Ohio & Michigan
– Waiting on some $ word on both “Soul Eater” and a reborn “Wild Michigan”
– “Race to Judgment” revised script complete and more packaging underway including the addition of Lana Wood, Roger Collard & Delvon Roe
– “Dean Teaster’s Long Road Home” packaging our distributor interest for a possible fall Michigan shoot
– “Locked in a Room” will have a Michigan premiere on May 3rd 7:00 and I’m told cast and crew will be free and guests and public will be a paid admission. Additional theatrical showings are also being set up by director Larry Simmons.
I might have a few updates on CDI TV division and our commercial division will soon be announcing a large “Making of” project for a large studio project I’m involved with. With the sunshine comes a new energy to work hard and tell some great stories. BUT today is going to be a day of friendship, family and enjoying the day!
