Film Updates, Family & Free Wasteland Watch

Hello my friends out there. I’m writing this on Friday night to release around midnight because tomorrow is busy. We’re having the 2nd of basically three Thanksgivings or family gatherings. I’m not a huge fan of the history of the day  but that is neither here nor there – the day has become one to gather with loved ones and be thankful. I can get behind that and so I’ve been enjoying some family time. I’ve been sneaking business in on these off days. Let’s see what we’ve been up to…

Let’s see…

“Knight Chills” deal was signed and so book cover/film artwork will begin. I also got some time to write on the sequel. We’ve had some cool talks with a few keys involved in this sequel.

Original KNIGHT CHILLS poster – “Scream” style.

Once we get this going we will look at “From Venus” to see what can be done there. We just have so much more technology at ours hands now. Some of these earlier films did not have all the bells and whistles we wanted. It will be fun to revisit some of these worlds.

The national release dates we are hearing –

DONORS!

Distribution news coming!

“Donors” – Feb 2nd, 2016

“Bestseller” – May 3rd, 2016

“Ashes of Eden” has a new street date pushed in light of a TV deal. That announcement I’m told will release from distributor on Tuesday.

A few development talks on our next project with Jesse Low. We’ll be announcing something on that maybe around Christmas. It will shoot in 2016.

1st teaser poster for “Chasing the Star”

The foundation of the “house” (film) “Chasing the Star” is about to be set. I had to get some paperwork around this past week. It is much easier to focus on paperwork when it is cold and wet outside. Coffee (David Hayes) and I just TCB’d. That is an Elvis saying that I take to heart. Taking Care of Business. I try.

Had good negotiations on a script that’s being re-optioned. I got half way through one script I was reading. I started the book I was sent to look over for a film role. Aside from reading others work I’m closing in fast on a first draft of “I can’t tell you yet” but the 3rd script in the QUEST trilogy.

40 Nights

“40 Nights” – the 1st film in the QUEST trilogy.

The 1st film “40 Nights” is about to be all pulled together. The intro, VFX, sound, music – all the elements. The last two steps will be color correct and final mix to 5.1 surround. We released a teaser about a week ago. This was a small test snippet after already releasing the official trailer. Check it out on the “40 Nights” Facebook site and JOIN US:) Everyone is excited to see this film as a finished project.

AN ORDINARY KILLER

We’ve also been digitizing the CDI library. Many of the films were stored on tapes of various types. One had to have some fixing. Thank you Scott! We have offers extended on more TV play so we’ll be presenting for 2016. Some of the films are getting a great repackaging – VOD did not exist when some of these films released. Also some have not had a BluRay release yet. So lots of fun stuff with the earlier films. We still have lots of people watching “Darkest Night,” “7 Stones” and many others. Thank you for reaching out.

7 Stones Master

“Bestseller” is getting ready to release early December in Grayling, Michigan. I’m working on Kalamazoo and Detroit area still. We’ll keep playing it leading up to the national release. The film plays great on the big screen. I also can say that “Bestseller” was the film that cemented the upcoming “C.U.J.O.” role. Is that a hint? I don’t think so. Maybe?

BESTSELLER

Lastly, in 2016 we’re going to try and launch an online store, theater and such. CDI will keep evolving and working on collective developments:)

Have a great weekend. I hope my alumni school MSU has another good week on the grid. Our Lions made us proud on Thanksgiving – great job!

Be good to one another out there.

Casting, Candleberry and Create VS Hate

IMG_1386.JPG

The first snow of mention kissed the ground last night. It’s beautiful and welcome at least for a while. The harvest was finished yesterday with the pulling of the beets. A final mulch and mow and stowing the last of the yard items until spring. This morning has been all coffee (BREAKING update) I may have a new coffee sponsor – stay tuned. Speaking of sponsors, this morning has been wonderful with coffee and The Candleberry Candle Company! They have been a personal sponsor for a few years helping me find my mindspace to work on scripts. My zen to keep patience when dealing with accounting and BS technology issues. OK. Let’s be honest on that front. 98% of my technology issues are with my technological issues. From my earliest days of friends playing with the video camera – my buddy Darrel was always the camera guy. He could get the camera to roll back to the right VHS frame. We didn’t have editing back in the day. We shot one take in order. Boom box on set was our music. Those days were fun and free. Of course being young without the daily adult issues was more free. I cherish those days beyond words. I’ve worked hard to establish a worth in our business and I can’t just play. It reduces value and being part of something “bad” (maybe still fun) can make you go backwards. I’ve got management pushing me up into the larger films. I’ve got a few studios that have taken an interest in developing my branding. I still have fun when playing on set now – it just has to make sense business-wise.

"Don't Hate - Create" - DJ Perry

I had a funny message a few weeks ago but I was too busy to really even address it. It was from a filmmaker whom I had heard all good things about. Previously they had expressed to a mutual associate that they wanted to get a script in my hands. It was in the thriller/horror genre as I recall. With good recommendations behind them I even thought a future collaboration might be possible. I have a few horror scripts with interested distribution and foreign sales waiting. It has to be the right director and the project just is not front and center right now in development. They were working on a script and we inquired about bringing to the table scripts that made business-sense because business was there. I recall the idea being just lukewarm. Lot’s of people have their own scripts to do but if distributors/retailers don’t want it why shoot it? So fast forward and coming from Yuma shooting “40 Nights” I recall getting a script and reading it at the airport. It wasn’t bad as I recall just not anything I was into doing. Maybe I needed time away from playing Jesus before heading into the dark side again? But whatever reason – it was a pass. Now under some odd screen name I got contacted and scolded for talking SHI$% about their script and making a Jesus film. OK. They wanted to twist a dagger with a “So and so also just made the same Jesus film…” 🙂 First, you have not seen our film. Second, that is like saying, “someone else made a film about a haunted house” – okay. I’ve had rocks thrown at me for years and I’m okay with that. It is a badge of honor and respect – some of my celebrity friends have all confirmed – when hate starts you’re getting success. Now, when I got around to reading this message I wasn’t mad. To me, I saw a frustrated artist who took my rejection of a role as a rejection of his art.  Not true. I almost reached out because if he is a good artist this kind of negativity leads to career death. I can say that because I’ve seen it. That was the funny thing about our screening of “An Ordinary Killer” last week. A perfect movie? No. Art is subjective. It did sell out 12 of 13 theatricals, USA/Australia distribution and played on ABC. We made that film 13 years ago. WOW! And that was our 5th CDI feature and the library is much larger now. The point is I want people to succeed but by good business and hard work. No shortcuts and half-ass business. People who know me will say that I give you an honest opinion. I’ve had lots of experiences in our business and while I learn something new daily – I’ve gathered a good amount of knowledge.

RESPECT. I’ve given it and had several good advisors and mentors.

IF YOU GIVE IT – you too can learn, grow and thrive.

That one communication was just a good example of how not to build bridges. You get feedback and you get defensive – that shuts down any respectful communication. Do I practice what I preach?

1st official teaser poster from the 2nd film in the QUEST Trilogy

1st official teaser poster from the 2nd film in the QUEST Trilogy

CHASING THE STAR – On Friday Bret Miller, our director and I, concluded a three-hour plus script meeting.  I’m happy to say we have draft 2 with the directors input. We moved a few scenes for pacing and flow and he had a few ideas that we put in there. Our distributors had purchased a suit and we were giving it a tailor. It is exciting and so that will start to go out next week.

On casting we’ve been looking at several reels – most on the west coast because we’re limited on flights. We also fly in several of our keys because that is just as important. They are stars on the other side of the camera. Funny. In Michigan I hear complaints when films come in and bring their keys. I will once again get back at them by bringing some of our Michigan keys. I can’t bring everyone and that is a hard balance. But once again some of us will depart Michigan in Feb for Arizona. Maybe that is why I can enjoy the snow.

"40 Nights" - the 1st film in the QUEST trilogy.

“40 Nights” – the 1st film in the QUEST trilogy.

40 Nights – This week my goal is to pull in the intro sequence and VFX. Sound design is closing up and our director loved the direction. The music score is also coming together. We released a teaser that used a snippet of music.

We’ve been re-mastered the CDI library in prep of some new VOD, foreign, TV deals and a possible CDI Online store. The book/DVD deal on “Knight Chills” is signed and some PR will release on that.

DJ Perry & Shane Hagedorn on set “Ashes of Eden”

I thought some PR from our distributor was coming out on the “Ashes of Eden” TV deal. Something for next week! Closed caption deal on “Donors” releasing Feb 02. “Bestseller” is playing Grayling, MI Dec. 10th look for a new event page and updates. The national release date on “Bestseller” might be March 02 but we’re trying to confirm. I will confirm that artwork is being done and I’m looking forward to that.

Script, script, scripts… – I signed an NDA and had a book sent to me that will be followed by the script. A studio I’m working with sent me a script that they want me to star in. Also another couple of projects to consider/talk about  – one is a TV show reboot and the other a major film on par with C.U.J.O.. That project is moving forward and looks to shoot in 2016. I will say more when I can.

Let’s wrap this up. I’m going to watch MSU and maybe read a script.

Enjoy your weekend!

Character Development & Laying Foundations

It’s the early afternoon and I’m typing from my new computer. This week I’ve been trying to set up what will be my work tool for the next couple years. My last MAC was a great work horse and if I get the same from this one I will be very happy. I’m still trying to get some of my key software moved onto this computer. It is no secret that I’m not a computer wiz. I do get by but technology is one of the few things that can really disrupt my zen. So far my patience has been pretty good. This morning was nice whereas I went to an estate sale of someone who was at least in part a brewer of wine & beer. This is a hobby I also share and so I picked up a few books, a siphon and even some random wines that this fella made. So I will get to taste someone else’s fruits of their labor. I also got a nice coat of arms for the office. This week I also found a character piece. I often like to have some object that I help build a role around. Sometimes you may never see the object be it a ring, a coin in the pocket or so on. This object is an old wood hammer. It may give some hint as to the type of role I will be playing soon. This project is almost a full go and once it is we have a lot to announce on it. It has been in development for a while and will be a fun challenge. Let’s look at some of the other updates.

This coming week I will be releasing some 1st artwork and PR on “Wicked Spring,” and “Donors” films. We had a great review on “Donors” by genre author Nancy Gideon.

“Ashes of Eden” has had a one month push due to talks with Wal-Mart on release dates. I’m sure that announcement will be going out.

“Bestseller” FX and opening credits are done and this week we should have our first pass on sound design all done. A second pass to make sure all is there and music work will begin.

Five CDI films are being sent for consideration to a pair of TV networks we’ve done business with before.

“Knight Chills II” will have a press release this week with some new info and some 1st teaser artwork. Some first distributor talks have also started on this title.

We had a meeting over a few of the earlier CDI titles discussed getting released this year on DVD/VOD.

TV and foreign buyer discussions also continue and I think we will see many more titles moving throughout the world marketplace.

The end of the year State filings and other non-sexy movie work has also taken some of my focus and time.

With the hard work paying off we should have some solid movement in the next two weeks from development into pre-production. I’ve been balancing my time between the forthcoming role(s) and producing work. My two scripts I have in process have slowed while I try to get my software onto my new computer. But this foundation work will all pay off. The CORNERSTONE to it all. SQUARE business. Keep it all on the LEVEL.

Have a great weekend and a productive week ahead!

Enjoying the Struggle & Updates

What a week with the friday morning/afternoon being a touch chaotic. The communication flow between people is one of the utmost important aspects of filmmaking. Let’s jump into some of this since I have running around this morning and I’m attending a wedding this afternoon.

BESTSELLER is a picture lock providing our director is happy with her small insert today but I think we’re onto the next phase. The materials are being moved about to their new destination and I’m excited for the scoring of the music to begin. We  will be announcing that formerly this coming week but you heard it here first.

ASHES OF EDEN also has PR waiting to come out. We’ve been waiting for the theatrical link to go up at Emagine Entertainment so we can start heavy promoting our Sept 19th start dates. So if you are from the East side of the state of Michigan and want to see what all the hype is about – your chance is coming. Canton and Novi is where we will start the release and we’re also working towards setting up a showing in the Owosso, MI area. We had an amazing run with AN ORDINARY KILLER there and think people there would love the new film.

And speaking of AN ORDINARY KILLER it may be one of the films returning to theaters from the CDI library. I see GHOST TOWN also making a run in the coming months. If you have not seen either of these films on the big screen you are missing something.

AOE (ASHES OF EDEN) is also close to closing its 1st TV deal and we are in final stages of negotiations on the DVD, VOD National deal for 1st quarter 2015.

I have a new VOD multi national deal interested in several of the CDI library. We will do a test run with a few titles and see how that goes.

Thoughts from the week –

APPRECIATION

I still stand by the fact that many of the youth today don’t know how many more opportunities in our business exist now compared to a decade ago or so. I see more kids who have classroom experience but their real world experience is still playing catch up. Example – doing shorts, commercials, music videos and such do NOT fully prepare you for 3-5 weeks of feature filming shooting. It’s a self battle with endurance, focus and teamwork. I had to have a firm conversation or two this week with people over little issues. I think there can be a lack of appreciation of what it truly takes to produce a film properly. The UNSEXY parts of the business – the paperwork, accounting and on-going work opening up new opportunities to release. But this is what I do for a living and I love it. I’m extremely serious about my film work and the art we create because at one time even the idea of doing motion picture work was seen as a joke. Now our films get done with quality all while trying to create the best crew experience you can within a closed environment like a film set. I try to be fair and work with people and their issues or explain why I cannot. But if people start becoming too much of an issue – they just need to go work elsewhere. I know many people who found new respect for what we do once they had to go work on a less than organized film set. I’m not talking short films – where some say “I did this short and it ran perfect.” GREAT, it was 3 days!  Come talk to me when you’re deep into week three and see how the ship is doing. Feature filmmaking is a long distant run not a sprint. Also being a pain in the you know what is an easy way not to get invited to sail next time around. I use to feel for the few bad apples but I try not to now. Some people do something silly and they just need to learn the hard way. When you have a lot of people doing the right thing you can’t waste too much time on that one person or so hurting themselves. It is often best to cut them loose and let them learn elsewhere. Knowing your craft is NOT enough. You having the right attitude is what is valuable.

SUCCESS CAN BREED RESENTMENT

This week I also had conversations with people who are not quite feeling the love in their new-found success from some around them. I explained that if you have not transitioned to FULL TIME filmmaking/acting and are working a day job – many may secretly resent you. Why? Because they wonder why you can’t just be happy being as they are. Why do you feel like you  need to do something greater? How dare you think you are better than me? To others you can often be that “in your face” reminder of the dream that he/she let go. Did they really want to go to coach sports? Did they always dream of owning a coffee shop? It’s harder to strive for true happiness. Some people can truly be happy playing their part in a job while others see it as a stepping stone to their dreams. If you can be happy in a 9-5 job that is a blessing. For some, they feel compelled to create. It doesn’t make creators any better it’s just what they feel a need to do. Often it creates self suffering for the artist in the journey but can lead to great satisfaction. You just can’t expect everyone to support your journey. When I see people throwing negativity I feel bad for them because it they put that same energy into their own dreams they would be much better people. It would help them be better people for sure. Instead they are the negative ones always casting stones. Keep smiling and keep moving forward.

IN SUMMARY

It was just one of those weeks but it ended with true progress and some very promising news. There may be times where you walk against the blowing wind trying to slow you down. I say don’t pee against the wind and just keep walking steady. That’s what the week felt like but now things seem quite at peace.

Enjoy the struggle. If it was easy everyone would do it.

Blessings of the Path

I want to start this blog by welcoming the new readers from Japan and Singapore! I’m very excited by how many international artists are following this blog. I tell many around me locally that my group I identify with are the sincere artist-doers from around the globe. The one’s who create within a framework of business that allows international exposure. I truly do celebrate the differences between us as people. When I see one group of people trying to put another people “in-line” I feel like we are not evolving properly. I LOVE the pride people take in their customs and traditions. From Philippine Balut to Canadian Poutine. Quail eggs in Mexico and delicious South Indian Coffee. My career has brought me so much more beyond just telling a story on the screen. I’ve met people, seen places, tried foods and heard stories unique in their being. This is part of the blessing/gift bestowed upon me by choosing this path.

Now I’m writing this blog in advance since I’m going down south to visit with some family. Sweet tea & Southern cooking is usually what lies in store. I’ve got a few topics to meditate upon as I relax from the normal hustle and bustle. Take some time to UNPLUG. I saw an associate on FB was talking about how at a family meal EVERYONE was PLUGGED into their phones. I told her that she and her family should put the phones in a basket if it is that bad. It will probably feel like withdrawals from some techno crack BUT it will be good for you. I easily can roll back the years, remembering the days of pagers and of no personal phones.

Now technology has made certain aspects of our industry easier. We’re in post production with http://www.bestsellerthemovie.com and I think we are VERY close to a locked picture. From there is will be the audio and graphics work including the final color correction. I have a smile as I type because I think again the artists on this project have created something wonderful. Only time will tell if others feel the same.

ASHES OF EDEN is in final negotiations on the National release that will happen 1st quarter 2015. And leading up to that release we will be doing more theatrical releases. Today was the last showing in Grand Rapids, MI and starting Sept 19th ASHES OF EDEN will play in Novi and Canton Michigan. I can’t wait for friends and fans on that side of the state to see the film.

I could go on for quite a while about other projects now in post production.  Some are newly completed and soon to release. Others  are still in development struggling to be made. I’ve been also trying to catch up on some script reading. I’ve been enjoying my read on a WW2 script recently presented. I’m also excited about a few of my new acting submissions via my management. I appreciate the sincere way that I’m being represented to casting directors and executive teams. The last two projects I’ve been submitted for …Wow! I’m just happy to have my work put before these people. If something clicks I’m ready to go do what I do.

I’m going to cut this short because I have to renew this blog site. Again I want to thank all of you out there. I hope you have a great weekend and week ahead.

Best,

DJ

Keeping Focus and 2014 Teases

I’m enjoying sipping the coffee on this chilly morning. I slept sound last night after some long moments in the cold yesterday shooting on the film “Dead Quiet”. I got to have some extreme FX make up done with some latex which I’m still peeling off in little pieces. It was nice to see Gabrielle Stone and work again with her. It is hard to believe it was 4 years – oh, how time flies. I also met some real nice cast and crew and I think they will pull off a good film.

It has been a busy week of business as many opportunities that have been worked on for some time have been opening up. It appears that the western that I’ve signed on to star in is moving along and once they do a formal PR announcement I will discuss more. It appears that the faith films in the vein of “Book of Ruth” could be going into production in 2014. Looking at sales reports we should be doing more of these. There appears to be an option against purchase on one of my scripts looking promising. Production and distribution options via a studio could be looming as discussions continue on that front. I’m excited about that because while we are doing some good direct sales with CDI Distribution I would love to focus more on production and less on funding and distribution. Also with budgets climbing into multiple millions having some additional experience of a studio would be welcome.

On the post front, “The Terrorist,” “Ashes of Eden,” “Donors” and “Bestseller” will all be coming out in 2014 and we will find a home for the “Supermodel Showdown” TV show. With 3 shows completed and being shown I think we will narrow down and find a home soon. Also many of the CDI library will also be expanding their audience into the foreign market.

Overall I would say that my plate is full. I’ve had 3 other possible acting projects for 2014 start discussions with me and I’m excited by the possibility of those. I enjoy the occasional “just acting” as it provides a much more relaxed journey. As I’ve mentioned before I also am happy that the state of Michigan has had more feature film production happening. Some of the best advice that I’ve ever had or given was to just do your thing. Do it to the best of your ability. (this means producing especially) Don’t keep looking over your shoulder. By this I mean, don’t concern yourself with what everyone else is doing – focus on what you are doing. I’m so busy with running our business and when I’m not busy with that I’m enjoying family and friends – I don’t keep up with everything everyone else is doing. It is not an arrogance it is a management of time. I have only so much time. I can spend it doing my development, production and distribution duties as well as evaluate acting offers. I’ve got an obligation to give my best. It doesn’t mean that I don’t make errors or fall short – but that is happening with my focus. Imagine if I spent more time stalking people’s work to see what they are doing. I don’t wish for what others have I just build my own and keep moving. Plain and simple – I outwork people. I also try to always give my best. That said, so should you. And between those projects remember to live.

Thanksgiving Crash and Film Catch Up

It is a great Saturday after Thanksgiving and watching MSU play their final game of the season. We’ve also been putting up Christmas decorations outside and the tree may also happen today. Yesterday was a unique Thanksgiving as my girl Courtney and I went up North to a family dinner. Lansing was fine but as we drove North we entered into a good amount of snow. We had just turned onto the country road heading to our destination while listening to the Lions putting a final beat down when the car hit ice. I was the passenger and just stayed calm thinking – “Crap we might end up in the ditch”. The right side of the road was all tree’s including a down tree that had the broken back-end pointed at us like a lance. She calmly counter steered and we instead slid sideways to the left towards a ditch. The ditch ended up being a bigger drop off and next thing I know I’m rolling upside down. Glass breaking and food flying including 3 pies and two dishes of beets and cream spinach. We ended back upright and asked each other if we were okay. We were and realized that we had taken out a barbed wire fence and 3 or 4 wood posts. The engine was smoking some and we shut that down. Both driver doors crunched shut with her window gone. The roof and windshield all smashed in but still there. My door was against a small tree but opened. A few calls and we had tow truck, police and her family there. All good save one vehicle (likely totaled) and the food – so we consider ourselves lucky. More so because we usually take one of the dogs with us and did not and also we had no passengers on this day. So it was a first roll over for me and a Thanksgiving to remember for sure. It was the topper of an already interesting week.

So last week I did two radio shows to discuss our movie projects. One for Lansing Business and the other the Independent Corner. We’re now closing in on a finished “Ashes of Eden” and soon will begin actual editing on “Bestseller”. These films along with “Donors” (another thriller coming out of post) has made recent distribution talks interesting. Actually I’ve been discussing some studio production deals with CDI and I’ve had some additional interest in a few other scripts for possible production.

The drama “7 Stones” just released on Amazon last week on DVD and I think VOD also. “Wicked Spring” released last week in Germany and several of the CDI films will be moving out to these territories in 2014. New contacts are opening daily. Right now it is really making the time to vet out the people and explore the deals.  From there it is seeing which projects fit and see how to proceed next.

I’m in negotiations to maybe do one more film this year only as an actor. I will let you all know if I sign onto the role. I’m waiting on dates to see if they work with my holiday commitments. I also signed a LOI to star in a western next year which I hope will have a full green light by Jan. 2014. I’ve had a few good opportunities present themselves but I will just take them as they come. It will be a productive 2014 both with releases and new projects. “The Terrorist” that I shot in NYC will also be an exciting release. I have much to feel thankful about on the career front.

This is always a time of planning, accessing and getting ready for the new year ahead. I also love the time spent with family, friends and close associates. I urge you all to do the same. Have a great day and for those braving the shopping chaos be kind and safe. I’m off to do a bit more decorating and prep some venison stew for my visiting brother and amigos tomorrow.

Stay warm!

Wicked Spring, Westerns and What’s Next

What a wonderful week. I’ve been working with our “Bestseller” team to polish up our accounting, get post work set up and promotions. Our female lead Melissa Anschutz has had some interviews come out and we’ve also released a new batch of pictures. Please check out http://www.Bestsellerthemovie.com and see photos, PR and more. It has been a busy but productive week as I’ve prepped for end of the year work with CDI http://www.cdiproductions.com and our films.

This week was also paying out to investors, getting modest residuals, 1st monies flowing on new projects and so banking and business was a good part of the week. I had to catch up on some producer work that needed my attention when I was away. I also balanced that with lunch dates with both my parents. The past weekend was a great one for me standing up with my brother in his marriage.

I got to see the beautiful color grading work that was being done on “Ashes of Eden”. We’re looking at music and sound design work on Tuesday and I’m really looking forward to that. I’ve very excited to finish that film. I’m told that both “The Terrorist” and “Donors” are also VERY close to being done. 2014 will have these features along with “Bestseller” come to audiences worldwide.

The first of the film’s we recently licensed to Germany, Austria and Switzerland rolls out this month. The Civil War film “Wicked Spring” is releasing as “Virginia 1864” and I’m excited for this and the other CDI library to gain a greater international audience. “Locked in a Room” and “Darkest Night” will also both be releasing there.

I’ve also been working with my LA agent to prep my materials for presentation on a few studio projects. I’ve been in touch with a few casting agents this week and I’m looking at a few projects for acting. I can say after “Bestseller” that I’m warmed up! That film is some of the best action and intensity I’ve put to screen. I was ready for a break upon wrap but already the body is healed and the heart is starting to wonder…”what next?”

We’ve got a few projects being presented here and there for possible financing. I had good talks over the western I’m looking to star in today and I know that will be a great story to tell. Above and beyond all the film work past, present and future I’ve been building a wind break for our little Red Wood tree “Red” and dealing with some leaves. Today we went to a few estate sales and got a few great pieces for the house and office. Well, I didn’t forget about all of you out there. I was a little late posting because I had to watch MSU play while getting  a few other things done. Thank you so much for tuning into what is happening over here as I keep clawing my way to the middle:)

Have a safe Saturday. A peaceful Sunday and productive week.

Back Home & Happy to Be Doing New Biz

I’m sipping hot coffee looking at the beautiful sunshine coming in the window and I have a large dog snuggled close to my leg. I had to spend a few days getting my sleep schedule straight after my return from the “Bestseller” shoot. Also we now have our back up’s complete and we are now starting to marry audio/visual together before the editing starts. I’m also carefully watching the typhoon in the Philippines where I filmed “Darkest Night”. Such great people and I feel horrible that they had to deal with that massive storm. Very sad. My thoughts are with them there today.

I also had the wonderful job of going into the studio with Shane Hagedorn and see the new color correction on “Ashes of Eden”. The film looks beautiful and I’m excited to have this rolling out soon to audiences. We also had some good time to discuss what is next in our collaborations. On sound design – we are about 85% complete there and also some music has been dropped into the film. I will be watching/listening to some of that this coming week.

Upcoming 2014 is going to bring some great developments by way of releases and sales/licensing to other territories with our films. Give me a few weeks and my mind might drift to what the next film is but right now just getting a handle back on these two films that are in post.

I know that a small Christmas film I had a role in “Holiday Miracle” is going to be showing at a few festivals – it should come to DVD soon after. I’m still looking forward to “The Terrorist” to get its big release. I’m going to reach out and see where we are with that.

Other than these updates I have to give congrats to my brother Adam and his new wife Abby. That was a great event to come home to and a nice change from the day-to-day of being off for over a month with “Bestseller”. If you have not found the Facebook site to see pics from the shoot feel free to explore http://www.bestsellerthemovie.com

Have a great fall day!

“BESTSELLER” LAST DAY

MSU game on the radio as I do some wrap up work on our last day of filming. We had another great day/night of filming yesterday and now our last day is upon us. As I looked back at some of the day 1-3 photos I am brought back to the start of this journey. It started weeks before showing up on site but continued with 2 weeks of pre-production and our 3 weeks of shooting. Our biggest obstacle was also what made this film so beautiful and unique – the great N. Michigan outdoors. The wet cold that soaked into your very being but also into every bit of footage. The hauntingly beautiful colored trees set against the dark moody skies gave us just want we needed for ‘Bestseller” to come to life. I want to thank Christina Rohn, our director and Scott Castelein, director of photography for their passion and hard work. To our crew for their patience as we created the best artistic shots. To our cast for their powerful performances that will propel this story forward. I’m proud that in the fall of 2013 this is where I was at, these are the artists I was with and THIS is what we created. I want to thank everyone with the team on and off set. All our sponsors and supporters and the fans. We make the art for you and I’ve been so encouraged by all the great communications from those of you out there. This is another project that I will be proud to put my name to. Speaking for us all at Collective Development Inc., Misery Bay and Lake Street Media we give our thanks to you all.

I will have my updates next week that cover some of the other projects and what’s happening with them but right now I need to look over my final scenes and get ready to wrap this film up.  I wish everyone safe travels on their way back to their loved ones. Have a great weekend and go MSU;)

BESTSELLER Week 2 Wrap Up

I’m sipping some hazelnut coffee and relaxing a few back at the condo before we go into our last day of the week on BESTSELLER. http://www.bestsellerthemovie.com  The film is the current thriller that CDI is producing and I’m co-starring in. I have to say we have been earning our pieces of footage each and every day via hard work and cooperation. Petoskey in late October has a bite for sure. We have some great artists working on the film and they are being challenged daily. I think several are more experienced in shorts and commercial and so the challenge here is just the endurance challenge. This is further out to sea than most have traveled. This is a shorter voyage for me and not in a far away place but it will leave a newly seasoned crew better suited for feature work. Most all the keys have fought the feature-length challenges and so they are showing the way. I had 3 days straight of high intensity and yesterday my voice was all Eastwood and rough. We are moving to interiors for our last day of the week and I only have one major talking scene so that will help recovery. I will use Sunday to additionally rest the pipes.  Overall I think this will be my strongest thriller produced to date.

I am just off the phone with our post supervisor and things are really sounding great with “Ashes of Eden” and I could not be happier. That will be exiting just as “Bestseller” is entering. I’m excited to bring both these projects to audiences worldwide. I’ve got other film things in motion and will have more to update you all on once I get a few more pieces in place. In the meantime I have an accounting meeting and have to get ready for tonight’s shooting. After that one more week and it will be a wrap. Have a great weekend and stay warm if you are in the midwest. Thank you Canada for all that cold air coming our way. I will appreciate that when I’m freezing in the water next week. Lastly, go MSU:)

Lana Wood, Knox, Taylor and Taking Pride

The quiet rain outside falls against the colored leaves of fall. My review of budget for the morning puts a cautious smile on my face. The call to set tells me that everyone is working steadily along to capture our last day of week 1 on the thriller “Bestseller”. This is my final action before my pick up to set. Terence Knox came in and was on-screen yesterday and it was good to see an old friend. He has mellowed some in his age and I see moments of tender and sweet – perfect for his compassionate doctor. The gruff soldier and ex-boxer that he was has given way some and I like how he wears it. The previous day was the 1st time I’ve ever had fellow Lansing, MI gone Hollywood actor Taylor Nichols on a CDI project. He was powerful in his work and we had equally strong talent in Ralph Lister, a MI adopted Brit playing opposite him. Today Lana Wood, true Hollywood royalty is once again gracing one of our films. I love her performances and I will be seeing her within the hour. The crew is bonding and I purposely put the hardest part of the schedule up front. Once we are past that it will be settling in for two weeks at a much more operational set with much less breakdown and no true company moves. The emergency vehicles and tighter sets will be shot out and only the large beautiful lakeside sets remain.

I also got to bookend my character this week. My first and last scenes are done and now I truly know my beginnings and end of my arc. So now the story will unfold for me within these fate marks. I’m ready to play and I can freely do so because of the confidence I have in our crew. The hard work was done in pre-production and so it will now pay off in the quality of the work we produce. That brings me to my little soapbox moment of the week. For 17 years I’ve proudly fought the “backwater” stigma that follows Michigan. A reputation of being 2nd rate artists because we aren’t from Hollywood or NYC. It is unfortunate that for every set experience I give to outsiders that leaves them astonished at the professionalism there is a half-dozen clusterF#@% sets that leave people stating “Worst film experience ever” uttered about BRING BACK THE SUMMERTIME a film I almost produced but they refused to listen to reason and I decided to not participate. Sad that it was someone’s 1st Michigan experience and that is the story they will tell. Now I see and hear of other great productions in state. 10 West studios, I don’t know them but I’ve seen their product and it is very good. Rich Brauer, had lunch with him and know his product. These people I see the effort to stand proud as storytellers. On the other hand I see gross neglect and piss poor planning just destroying the film community. Now I work all over and so the state of our local film community really doesn’t affect me completely but I do care. When I see people not only show complete disregard for professional process but brag about it as if it was hip or cool – I feel pity. I feel bad for those so in need of a paycheck or so desperate that they climb on board a doomsday ship. “Welcome to starship screw up – next destination – the sun.” Now I know some of these people or know of them. I see boasts of pushing crews too hard, unreasonable expectations, managing with anger and admission at a full house premiere that they barely had a script and that they were disorganized in their schedule most of the time. This was presented as some kind of joke to be made at the Oscars. I cringed because the product reflected all those things. And to many not in the knowing that is what reflected our State of Michigan and the artists within. To these people – do better. Take some pride in your work and process. Don’t treat our industry like a joke. Because what you don’t realize is that you ARE the joke. You are also giving our State and our artists a bad name. Now in our industry it has a way of weeding out the ASS CLOWNS as I like to call them but not before damage is done. And for some of you out there be careful what circus you join. You are artists to be respected. You are all a vital part of every storytelling endeavor be it in making coffee, pulling focus, last looks, lint brushing to musical scoring. Take pride in your work. Leaders take pride in your product. Art is subjective and not everyone will love it despite the outcome but always give your best efforts.

Have a great weekend. Off to set.

Advanced Casting Notice and Updates

What a busy week. I’m sipping some coffee and reflecting upon the week and I’m smiling. Scenes are being knocked down on “Ashes of Eden” and it is rewarding to see those pieces of the puzzle coming together. We are on schedule and soon we will start to release more promotional materials as we move along the post-production line. As we work on the edit and the distribution flow another film “Donors” is even closer to the finish line. Locked picture is about done and sound design has been underway. Now it will come to Michigan for music scoring.

I’m excited about the March releases of “Locked in a Room” and “Darkest Night”. Echo Bridge Entertainment did an early “Locked in a Room” release to Google Play and we debuted in the top 20 with #12 being our highest. We were shoulder to shoulder with several studio films so we were very happy. “Darkest Night” will release on March 22nd in the USA and than we are going to release in Asia with South Korea likely being the first Asian territory.

“The Beast” will be the follow up from the GPI/CDI collaboration and GPI has been doing some casting as they adjust their filming plan. I think “Soul Eater” may shoot 4th quarter this year as well. That deal may be close to closing.

“7 Stones” is starting to shop international and domestic TV. That brings me to another announcement that CDI will soon be announcing a TV line up. These properties will be developed with TV play in mind. We have relationships with various networks and these will create some new business on those fronts.

I’ve been having meetings over “Rifle” a western I’m involved in but that may not be the only film in that genre launching. Yes. That is a tease and so stay tuned for more information on this.

We will be doing a call for ACTOR REELS here very soon. It will be for certain characters in a breakdown. So if you don’t have your reel together this is a hint and a half for you to GET R DONE. Damn. I think I owe Larry the Cable Guy a dollar.

Talks with several foreign distributors are also underway. We are licensing our films directly on some international fronts. It is an exciting time here at CDI and with so many new doors opening it truly is hard to keep up.

I’m in talks about a possible film role in April. I’m contracted to be in the film “Somnium” in March. May looks like it will be camera time also I just have to make an important decision on casting. Which role do I want to play. There are two different characters in this film. Both are powerful and have different vibe and character arc. So I plan to refill the coffee cup and take another read this morning. I have to get that settled within myself so I can move forward. It is a WILD time:)

Have a great weekend!

A Tragic Story & TV Releases

Welcome to Feb. everyone. We are past the holidays and off to a great start. Before I get into some of the exciting updates I wanted to share a story. Many years ago when I was just starting this journey I knew this young girl. I knew her from the acting workshop that ultimately led to my 1st starring film role. The years that followed opened more doors but she was having trouble getting her first footholds. She was a blonde bombshell type that you might find on BAYWATCH or such. The girl could really act and really sing but her appearance made most see that first. I remember telling her over a game of pool that she would have to work twice as hard to get people to see past her boobs. It was true. I saw Bruce Campbell at an event climb over a table to come meet this young lady who arrived with a few friends. She had that appeal but still could not land that dramatic role she needed to showcase herself. She decided she wanted to go to Hollywood. I told her as hard as it was she should really try to get her experience in secondary markets before going Hollywood. She had her heart set on going and so I told her she had to be focused. Hollywood is like a full time spring break for young people. It is where wanna-be actors from around the world come with dreams in hand. They have what I call actor ghettos out there. Basically it is expensive out there and so aspiring actors live in certain areas. They usually party and talk about finding agents, finding a gig, blah, blah. The point is more talk than action. My 1st trip to LA I was invited. I went to read for Wes Craven and I stayed in one of these areas. In two weeks people were amazed because I had done more in two weeks than they did in two years. I don’t think I am more special than anyone I just have a focused way about me. I think that is from martial arts. So I told this girl don’t get caught into these traps. The trap of young people putting play before work. All night parties that lead to late wake ups that lead to day long hang overs that lead to food, coffee and where is the next party. They bitch about the unfair system that keeps a person down. I can’t get an agent. I never get the role. I can’t get a break because of…. never was there accountability. So I fill this girl up with as much common sense wisdom my immature self can muster. She heads out to grab her dream. Three weeks into her move I get a call and she was now dating some musician from a well known rock band. Long-short is that a handful of years later she is cast aside for a younger rock groupie. She has not done a single film but she has done every destructive drug possible. Her “glow” had faded and while she is still pretty she is now older and cannot compete with the better resumes. She moved back and spent more time here chasing cocaine and the next party. She ruined her image at a company party by asking around for “meth”. She moved here and there and I would occasionally get the call asking if there was any acting parts. Yes. I want to risk investor money on a worn out looking girl showing wear and tear of a woman twice her age. A flakey drug addict that may or may not show up somewhere. The last time I saw her was years ago at a local bar where I had gone to meet a few friends during the holidays. She was a hot mess and full of regret. I recall the words of encouragement I shared and wished her well. She was living in Florida but was home on holiday. Years go by and nothing from her. I finally got a phone call a few years ago saying she had moved back to Michigan and was working at her church. She said we should catch up and party a bit. I was not in that mode and surely did not want to feed that. My career path has not been easy and if you are not a hard worker you will fail. I never called her back but emailed her something to the effect that I was glad she was back in-state and getting her life together. I mentioned maybe coffee sometime but I did not follow up. I think because she was still asking about acting and I did not want to hurt her feelings – I never met up with her. I would not be hiring her anytime soon for an acting role knowing all that I knew already. Years clicked by and unfortunately the only time she sprang to mind was when I saw an AOL story on before and after of METH. Well recently I found out that she died in 2011 at age 33. They did not mention how but it had to be drugs either by accident or purposely. I found this out only this week. I was having a day of slight frustration waiting for this deal to close or that. It took me all the way back to the beginning. I wanted to tell this story on here because if it saves even one person it will have served a purpose. I see many of the same type of people looking for short cuts to stardom. So heed my words. Remember the solid words of the hard working people around you. Love yourself. Thank you for listening.

TO MOVIE NEWS.

A deal has been made for the inspirational film “Figure in the Forest” and the powerful Civil War drama “Wicked Spring” to play on the Parables Network. It should start playing later this month and I’m proud to have these films going out to new audiences. We will be working additional distribution deals on these and all our films.

We will also be announcing that “Deadly Renovations” is going to vudu VOD platform expanding the release of this film even more. The film is also opening an AZ festival by special invitation. Pre-sales on “Locked in a Room” and “Darkest Night” will be starting this month. “Benjamin” is playing the Long Island Film Festival in March also. April 19th with be the theatrical and DVD release of “Realizism” in Grand Rapids, MI.

Today I’m going out to look at “Ashes of Eden” editing work. The trailer has created a lot of buzz and it should. I think it really gives a powerful peek at what the film is about. Also we will be discussing future collaboration between our companies.

I hope you all have a fun and safe weekend. Enjoy the Superbowl with family and friends and have a great month.

Saturday Thoughts & Film Updates

This Saturday seems clouded by vast sadness. It was so shocking for many  because it was young children and it happened in a place often devoid of crime. The fact is that ugly things happen everyday. I was just thinking about how so many people are connected by social media. It can be used positively but also can be like a collective poison well. I can recall during 9-11 how the news just became a constant flow of fear and negativity. Collectively we all have tragedy in our lives. More and more tragedy is now played out on public social media. I think it can start productive conversation and for those facing heavy issues they feel maybe not so alone. There is still no stopping tragedy as it is part of our life cycle. If you don’t think that some rice farmer with ruined crops born into a world of poverty can’t or hasn’t snapped. Someone deeply angry for being born into suffering versus someone born far away in a world of plenty. Someone angry for color of skin or being female in a society that looks upon them as 2nd rate human beings. I’ve found that true beauty often lies as far away from one another as we can get. We’re not usually beautiful people in our actions. More often we are self-serving, self-centric individuals who gravitate towards those who share our priorities and shun those not aligned with us.

With all this media we have to occasionally tune OUT versus tune IN. I recall how clearly I could think in the jungles of Costa Rica. It was devoid of a mental static that we rarely recognize as we walk through massive waves of electromagnetic energy. Swimming daily in media can be like taking a sewage bath. Moderation is my recommendation.

Movie updates…

OK. ASHES OF EDEN updates!

The audio and visuals are being married and some first initial cutting has started. We are in talks on creative post and look forward to the weeks ahead. Watch for many updates concerning this powerful film. Also some talks on the next collaborations so stay tuned!

Two of our films are going to TV networks (Wait for press releases)- the cloned masters are being made. We are also awaiting national domestic release dates on two films. These are unrelated to “Darkest Night” (March 22), “Locked in a Room” (announced soon). “7 Stones” had 1st TV play on Michigan TV. “Benjamin” just had two showings in Cairo, Egypt! More releases to be announced!

We have several projects in development moving down the line. I plan to have some good announcements for 2013!

Be good to one another!

Daphne, Distribution and Doing Prep Work!

It is Saturday morning and my day is slowly getting started. Our little Aussie Shepherd/Golden Retriever had to have surgery. She unfortunately had to as a puppy after an accidental coach fall when she was very young. The surgery went great and she was a little speed demon up to a while ago. Long short she had ruptured her ACL and had knee surgery. I was more worried than I let on and I feel today like after a big shoot. I’m truly exhausted. Now just a lot of extra care to get her back to normal. I missed the world premiere of “Benjamin” in NYC last night. I also pushed some meetings and such because my mind was on Daphne. I was relieved but like I said previously, exhausted. I’m finally getting my bearings back this morning. I was proud of the artists associated with “Benjamin” as I’ve been with all the films rolling out. I’m way past seeing myself on the big screen and it was nothing compared to seeing Daphne return home safe with her shaved leg and cone head piece. I’m very happy!

On the “Benjamin” tip I hear that we had a great showing and I know they are looking at a few MI showings so I will attend one of the others. Aside from that I’ve been working lines on a script for the end of July playing a Robin Hood like character. It is funny because I’ve been cast in that direction a few times. I play a good rogue with a heart of gold. I also put a read down for a Lincoln project being done in Virginia. I think it is being produced by Tony & Ridley Scott. I will see what they think of that read which I felt was pretty good:)

I’ve been in talks on films in MA, Morocco, France, Mexico and such. I think it will be a busy end of the year. I like that busy, busy and than the holidays that follow. Distribution talks continue on many of the films and I’m excited that soon they will be out to audiences. Development and film production opportunities keep growing stronger. I think we will see some new films moving into production.

I’ve been doing some good networking with other producers in LA with more experience to help guide the new projects. We have production down and it is really just about finding the best distribution in each genre for each film. It is slowly getting there. I mean we’ve had to deal with our share of setbacks but we keep driving forward. It will be an exciting next couple of years.  I will keep CLAWING MY WAY TO THE MIDDLE:)

Have a safe Holiday weekend!

Congrats to a Young CDI Tribe Member!

What a beautiful day here in Michigan. I’ve been working to get the garden ready that provides fresh veggies for a good part of the year. Venison steaks and grilled corn were last nights menu items and how I love them both. Today my business partner Jeff Kennedy is having their son Jackson graduate from high school and prepare to enter college at Michigan State University. He was top of his class and I’m happy that all those years around the crazy CDI tribe did not have him going Drew Barrymore on us.  We have another soccer match Sunday and I’m deeply enjoying all these are wonderful distractions. Why? My “TO DO” lists have expanded beyond my one legal pad page and well into a second page this past week.  Let’s look at a few of the things going on in the movie circle.

We are soon to announce a slate of films with a new partnership out west that includes a couple of CDI westerns and the kick off on that slate is “Soul Eater” a stand alone prequel to the wicked horror film “The 8th Plague”.

We are very close on kicking off a few faith films in the wake of the continued success of “Book of Ruth” and I for one enjoy these films which remind me of the old Charlton Heston films.

Speaking of faith films Dean Teaster’s “Long Road Home” is front running on a MI slate of films that we’re pushing hard to launch. Pureflix Ent. (Randy Travis company) has put an offer to distribute down and so we are close here. I really would like to see this slate go so that some of the artists here can be put to work. If you have an interested in being a partner on one of these feel free to contact via the http://www.cdiproductions.com site. You can read all about the new CDI associated film slate that is rolling out now to theaters, private screening parties and L.A. showings for distributors. READ UP!

Tickets for the next June 13th “7 Stones” screening party in Saugatuck, MI can be purchased at http://www.3rdcoastfilm.com

Also on June 13th at Dick Clark Productions we are having a distributor screening of “Darkest Night” http://www.darkestnightmovie.com a truly frightening “found footage” movie. Interested distributors contact me to get you on the list.

Aug. 7th is the Domestic release of “Deadly Renovations” and they are prepping hard on that. Put that on your calendars! http://www.deadlyrenovations.com

Aside from all that “Donors” is in post-production, a few TV shows in development and working to finalize a large studio “making of” project. I’ve got eight films talking to me about acting roles so I’ve been sorting through all that. I was also trying to do a 2 min sizzle reel of sorts on myself but I’m finding it hard to capture my career in 2 min. A couple of these films are foreign films which I find exciting because my work reaches new audiences and my US fans get exposed to some talented foreign artists. It was hinted at that I might be flown back to the Philippines in Nov. for the kick off release of “Darkest Night” in theaters there.

So with all this personal and company business things have been a little bit busy. I’m not going to complain I just keep my head down and work hard. I know when I need a mental break and so I break it up with a little yard work or other relaxing activities. Today will be one of those days with beer and grilled goods as we toast Jackson Kennedy. He made it through high school with high honors AND made a great choice with MSU!

Go Green!

Go White!

Have a great weekend!

Hard blowing, sideways snowing, coffee flowing – Saturday chill!

Hard blowing, sideways snowing, coffee flowing – Saturday chill! So it was a long week but so very productive. Let’s start with premiere showings. Thursday night at the GRAM (Grand Rapids Art Museum) fans got a 1st look at “7 Stones”. This action/drama is a very strong character study with lessons to be learned. They are going to spend the final 3 weeks polishing the sound mix and CGI. It was a fine night and I was proud to be there with all the other artists. Other festival and public theatricals will be coming. We have a meeting next week to discuss the course of all this.

Last night in San Diego at the San Diego Black Film Festival “Locked in a Room” had a 1st showing. I was not able to attend as I had the premiere the night before as the male star and tomorrow I have a NYC trip to pick up film stock. So I’m very interested to see what the audience reaction was to the film as I have yet to see the full finished film.

Several of my films are prepped to go out to the marketplace with NEW VIDEO distribution. They are best known for cable network releases and we were awaiting them to finalize their Wal-Mart deal. They also announced they now have a theatrical division from a merger. We also have a deal in the works to work with Missionary International to focus on the faith retailers. I’m hearing late 2nd quarter for the titles which will include Blu-Ray releases of “An Ordinary Killer,” “Judges” and “Blood Ties” and DVD/VOD releases of “Figure in the Forest” and “Heaven’s Neighbors”.

It has been decided that a high-end action packed investor trailer for “Sherwood Horror” will be shot to show the studios. So I’ll be prepping to play Rob Locksley which will be shot in VA with some of my close actor friends that have been cast by director John Regan. I’ve been training daily as I always do but I’m going to step that up some so I can really bring the action. Needless to say – I’m excited.

Also I’m limited to what I can say on this project but I had the pleasure of reading the final shoot script on a project I’ll be shooting in Dearborn, MI, New Orleans and Toronto. This project is with the same team doing the “In Our Time” (Jesus) project but is first on the slate. I can announce that it is called “Henry Ford: An American Legend” and I know that it is already in process with the Michigan Film Office. This is slated for a May/June start and will release with a major studio. I’ll release more info as I’m allowed.

I’ve got several projects in the Feb-April time frame and we will see where the pieces fall. We also have several projects of our own in development and they are looking strong. I also heard the rough draft of “Darkest Night” at the theatrical run time is done and they will be polishing that up with March being the finish date.

I’ll wrap this up for now. There is a lot of 2012 business at hand. Work hard and create your own opportunities. They don’t all come and drop in your lap so be smart.

I hope you all have a productive week!

RIP Bill McKinney – Appreciate the Artists

So I want to start my post this morning honoring a great actor whom I had the pleasure of working with on our Lionsgate western “Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town” (Comcast On Demand, Netflix, Amazon). This actor is Mr. Bill McKinney famous for many roles in great films such as “Deliverance,” “The Outlaw Josey Wales” and of course my favorite playing my father in GHOST TOWN. I recall doing producing paperwork at Robert Bradley’s home and on TV I’m watching Clint Eastwood and Bill verbal spar on-screen. I remember thinking “tomorrow is my turn” to play with this great actor. Our 1st day together was shooting the father/son stable scene and it is currently one of the 1st scenes on my reel as I believe it reflects some of my best work. Bill felt the scene because of not always seeing eye-to-eye with his own son and God knows my father and I have also had our disagreements. So the scene really worked and we had great respect for each other from that first day. I have been looking forward to the next time we would work together but yesterday I got word that told me  I would just have to appreciate the time we had. Bill McKinney passed away from throat cancer. His family said two weeks earlier he was shooting a commercial for DORITOS which doesn’t surprise me as the man was a battle axe. I hope the commercial is for the Superbowl because that would be a fitting send off. To work with Bill was to work with true greatness. It is why I will continue to be a fan of working with the aging vets of our industry despite what some casting folks say about BUZZ, HEAT and FLAVOR OF THE MONTH type B.S.. When the goal is to make a good film go to the old pros! They will add so much depth to your roles, your film and they are doing it for the love of the craft! So I want to give my on-screen dad a heartfelt send off. I only hope that I can be part of a string of hit films like he was. When it comes to intensity he could stand toe to toe with ANYONE. Cheers to Bill!

This week had me working film sales, development on no less than 4 different films and discussing acting roles in a few other movies for 2012. I did read a cool script the other night and I’m in discussions on that film. I’m told another director wants me to look at a role in a Michigan film so I expect to take another read soon. I’ve been doing a bit of writing on a script I’ve had upstairs in the nugget for quite a while so that has been enjoyable. I’ve also been sending paperwork around on the upcoming studio films I’ve got moving down the line. So overall it has been a very busy week. Thankfully I’m almost back to feeling myself again. I had a hard time with jet lag and came home just slightly sick.

We do have some casting calls slowly rolling out. You can seek out the COLLECTIVE DEVELOPMENT INC. Facebook site as they are posting there first. The first call was for a very experienced actor of Indian (India) background/look. Those who know me can attest how much stock I put into reels of previous work. Cold auditions suck and never yield the same results as seeing the actor in the real deal. So if you’ve been slacking on putting a reel together or getting your footage of past work – do so.

We’re also going to be posting at the CDI Facebook site to see if any female TRIPLETS that have that country girl “Daisy Mae” sort of vibe exist in Michigan or the surrounding states. I also heard that some of the Michigan film incentives were going to be back in action for 2012 so that is good news!

On the personal level I asked for some beautiful snow and boy we sure did get some. Almost eight inches of the white covered everything in the Lansing area. I’m going to have to do a little clean up as the heavy snow brought down a heavy tree branch on a portion of the garden fence. Not a problem as fences can be mended and now we have some more kindling to burn in the fire pit.

I will leave you all with the plea that next time you work on a project with a group of artists  truly appreciate that opportunity because as the wheel of life turns we will lose friends and peers. On the CDI Facebook site there is also an album that honors many of the fellow artists that have passed on. Remember and respect those artists who made their mark and passed on. Appreciate the artists and the moments spent with them. They are your history and part of your mythology.

Congrats to the New Tribal Folk at CDI!

The first sips of coffee in the morning taste so wonderful and again I ponder the need to find a good coffee endorsement. I had a busy week but I’m still managing to really enjoy the season. MSU had a great football win over UofM and I was happy to see that! Now if the Lions do there thing today it will be even better. Yesterday was a full day starting early and so I didn’t get to my blog. Today I also have a family brunch so I’m trying to fit this in now. If I’m still sleepy as I type please forgive me.

I’ve got my travel plans arranged for the “Darkest Night” premiere and promotions in the Philippines. It seems the “7 Stones” premiere is gonna be closer to Xmas due to FX work and sound design. Still no word on “Benjamin” and “Locked in a Room” premiere dates yet. I will say that with “Renovation” – the deal is about complete and we are clarifying our final three points before we roll out with that. I’m also working with GPI on setting a deal to release “Renovation” in the Philippines theatrically in addition to the limited release here in the US. Check out the film site http://www.renovationthemovie.com if you have not.

I had communications yesterday with the “In Our Time” folks and I need to get up with them on scheduling. The word is that on their slate our film has been moved up to #1. This project has a lot of interest worldwide. There is a lot of great info I have concerning this project but can only wait until production releases certain updates.

It is not to early to be planning 2012 – that should be a fun-filled year with projects.  Many films are in the running for production in 2012. A film will launch when it is truly ready. There are so many elements that need to line up to make some of the larger projects go forward. I continue my weekly development talks and I will say we have some great films in the hopper.

I want to give a big congrats to the CDI sales team on their 1st sponsorship sales of the 1st Lansing showing of “Outside the Wire”. So congrats to Mr. John Demarco and Mr. Jeff Watson. Also a nod to our in-house legal Mr. Eric Nelson who has been untangling some of our past business dealings that went astray. I want to recognize these folks for their hard work and happy they are part of the COLLECTIVE DEVELOPMENT tribe!

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Premieres, Puppies and Philippines!

The heat has made a small roar back into Michigan. It has been an enjoyable holiday weekend already. On the football tip – both the Det. Lions and MSU put checks in the win BOX. We’ve got the week off from soccer but won our last two games. I even scored and had an assist in each game which does not always happen. I like the team mentality and often prefer the “pass off” vs the “glory goal”. Many large artistic endeavors are team efforts vs the individual actions. They often contain individual artistic endeavors but they are all woven together as one piece of collective art.

Furthermore, this weekend has been made special by the fact that we got a new rescue puppy that will be trained to be the ongoing guard dog. We have a great guard dog now but she is getting up there in age. We also figured that the training would be easier with a good role model. So, now there is a little understudy named “Luke”.  A handsome coffee-color dude with blue/green eyes that will surely be a welcome new family addition. Our current “baby dog” is 4 and is having a slight adjustment as all her toys get played with.  She is the younger dog and a real love bug but not a true guard dog. More like an alarm and if we had animals to herd she would be in her element. The total now reads 3 dogs and 3 cats and I think our wildlife rescue is good and complete for now.

Onto the Movie news –

I’m being told that November will be the premiere screenings for “Locked in a Room”. Actually it looks like I’ll have many films showings that month. I’m still waiting to hear on “Benjamin” premiere screenings but I know that “Darkest Night” and “Seven Stones” are both suppose to show in November. I will have much to be thankful for:)

Follow that with a slew of December releases and a line up 2012 roles already underway and that equals BUSY. My attorney is currently working on shoot dates for “Madam CJ” and “In Our Time”. We were told the business structures are now set up and final structuring/casting is underway. I also hope to have more info on “Shadows of Death” my follow-up Philippine shoot with GPI. That will have us casting one American Jodi Foster type in a lead role. Casting notices will circulate soon.

Development activity has been – WIN some, LOSE some with some projects jumping ahead with packaging and others taking a step back. I guess that is the way of things. We will be announcing some development updates on certain projects via a series of press releases this month. You can only do your best and often good things will follow.

We do have a couple of “Outside the Wire” showings happening this month is Lansing, MI and so I’m excited for the hometown crowd to see this amazing story! I will do a complete post of times and dates in my next update. It is towards the end of the month and I hope many of you can make it out.

Also look for  a new Leading Lady announcement on Pepper’s http://www.djperryfanclub.com site.

Have a safe and fun-filled weekend.

No Freaky Deaky in Michigan and more…

The sun is shinning and the cold is slowly giving way to springtime buds. I had a busy week and a relaxing weekend. Now I wanted to share with you a few highlights of the week. First I’ve been in schedule craziness as I have 3 projects lined up back to back and I’m trying to work them all properly. As of yesterday my return trip to finish “Resurrection” in Las Vegas is being pushed to after Asia (Darkest Night) primarily due to a 2 week prep time I placed on myself for “Darkest Night” which includes final focus on character, change of looks, packing, getting stateside business in order. It was too much of a push on us both.

I have a TV film I’m co-starring in called “7 Stones” that I’m to do with director/writer Tom Norton. He’s the longtime friend I’ve been slowly developing the WW2 film “Operation Ruthless” with. Table read coming up once they conclude casting my female lead. That will also shoot soon after I return from Asia. As for the Asia (Philippines) film they have almost concluded crewing and casting over there. I’m one of two Americans the other being the writer/producer cameo but I’ve very excited about the whole trip.

Very good distribution talks this week on “Outside the Wire” which premieres at the Ohio Film Festival and now with the Vegas push I may be able to attend. These talks also extend to “Renovation” our horror/thriller and foreign rights on a few of our films including “Dean Teaster’s Ghost Town”.

Speaking of this fine film we have also started some business with “Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey” a company owned in part by Hank Williams Jr. after the passing of our friend Popcorn. He was in our Ghost Town film and there was a logical path of business and so it happened. I want to explore some foreign cross promotion between our western and the whiskey which goes international in a few months.

We’re waiting to see if our paperwork holds up with the Michigan film office on “Wild Michigan” which we are trying to get rolling this year. We’ve got more distribution companies on board and the value of this property has been noticed so pray. I will note that if the rebate doesn’t hold it may become “Wild Canada” which would be too bad for Michigan.

Speaking on this whole matter I do know right from the horses mouth (Sorry Charlie) that “Freaky Deaky” is NOT coming to Michigan because of the rebate situation. I was approached early on about a supporting role in that film and I thought how cool it was to film here. I had drinks years ago with Elmore Leonard at Motor Club in Hamtramck and look forward to working on the film. Looks like another out-of-state trip for me.

Development deals were solidified on “Secondary Heroes” a comedic/horror film and “Long Road Home” (faith drama) and more will be released about this in our PR. Look also to http://www.cdiproductions.com for new updates. I also had a few more acting offers come in with scripts to look at so I will do some reading this week. I’m way behind on all of my reading but I will play catch up now that I’ve pushed Vegas to after Asia.

I will have forthcoming info on the new studio releasing the CDI drama’s “Heaven’s Neighbors,” “Figure in the Forest, ” and animated children’s film “The Patchwork Girl of Oz”  next week. Also we were given our promised update on “In Our Time” the film that many people have been asking about. We were told that updates were being made to the website, new facebook sites, new PR and a new studio! We were in turn around with Lionsgate but now it seems they have gotten out from under that deal and reset at another major studio that they will announce soon.

So I’m gonna refill the Hazelnut coffee and enjoy my Sunday morning and I recommend you all do the same!

Around the Sun – Seeking Fun

Beautiful snow, bitter chill and the focus of people upon tasks of the New Year is in full swing. This has been a week where I knew people who had a baby born, a friend who had serious surgery and yet another friend who lost a beloved relative. The last one who passed was a very successful businessman who came down with an illness about a year ago. I know at one time he owned a medical company and sold jets yet in the end money mattered not. My pondering this week was IF someone of means knew how they might die would they focus their resources on a cure? I hope that over the next 10 years here we see certain diseases and illnesses go away. I seem to recall a scientist that inflicted himself with a disease to force himself to discover a cure. I still believe laughter to be one of the best preventions. Onto less serious matters…

Golden Globes – Okay one area of the acting world that they never teach you is the glamour PR end of the business. I must have played hookie that day of class. I’m talking about fashion. Ha! It’s a lucky day for me when I match. I do admit that I LOVE jackets and some hats. I have maybe three closets full of these items. Some are character clothes worn in my films. Such as my Wicked Spring or GPS hats. Or my Benjamin and Locked in a Room “Mr. Creepy” jacket. Most production companies have been cool enough to let me have these items. Likely one day some of these items will end up in an auction for the Humane Society. Right now their value is ah – modest. “Worn by who?” 🙂

Off topic again:) OK. So I’ve done some cool events in Boston, NYC, Hollywood, Vegas. Some have included the old red carpet. Funny thing that red carpet. Almost like it is some kind of yellow brick road…except this one is red. Maybe because it seems a little magical. I remember the first giant line of photographers at NIGHT OF 100 STARS lining the red carpet. I’m wearing a tux gotten at some local shop. The girls there at the shop loved helping me. FACT: I really dislike clothes shopping save maybe trying coats on.  BOTTOM LINE: I have other friends that have stuff thrown at them to wear at these events. What is their secret?

So can someone in the knowing tell me, how do I get sponsored on clothes for events? In my movies I’ve always had great artists who were PAID to make me match:) Where are they when I have an event to attend? That all said, I like being myself at functions. I feel that my best self is when I’m comfortable. So except in rare situations I dress purely for my comfort. I dress to my approval. Am I some self-centered ego maniac? OR Am I just a person who does not require others approval? I’m a person who sincerely believes that the man makes the clothes and not the other way around. A schmuck in a thousand dollar suit is still a schmuck. Ghandi dressed in a simple sheet is well…Ghandi.

I’ll get my meat suit ready for my next red carpet walk:)

Finding a clothing line sponsor has made my GOAL list this year. Coffee sponsor is STILL on my goal list. Coffee sponsor search went bust last year. On a positive – I’ve continued to use and promote ONE DROP BBQ and hot sauces at many of our grilling outings. This year I plan to make that list grow with products I actually like, use and enjoy. Why not?

OK. Some people have to be saying… “Come on DJ! The movies!” so let’s discuss a few. First RENOVATION will be making its 1st Non-premiere theatrical showing at the Yuma Historic Theater (AZ) March 11th and 12th watch http://www.renovationthemovie.com for more information. Tickets are $7.50

We’re also working on setting up a Las Vegas theatrical next. I might try something here in Michigan as well.

Acting-wise – I’m on hold for Vegas as they decide if they want to stick with what they have footage-wise or do they want/need any additional shooting. We might have several CDI associated projects underway this year. Some like SHERWOOD HORROR that we’ve talked about before are making some great strides. I’m very happy with the 2011 biz talks and I promise a slew of information here soon.

I will give you this EXCLUSIVE. Many folks on the international fan scene have been asking when DJ Perry is going to do another foreign film. I will say that an offer was made on a script I liked and so pen will be meeting paper very soon. Terms were agreed upon and I’m going to travel to an Asian Island this Spring to film a horror film. I love most horror films but the films now are starting to become very much alike. I find myself looking harder and harder for projects with more unique twists or tone of storytelling. I want to bring something new to you audiences out there.

Foreign film – KARMA CRIME, PASSION, REINCARNATION http://www.karmacpr.com was my other supernatural thriller filmed in India. I love the vibe of that film. I’m told it will likely be coming to US TV/DVD in 2011. It is very worth a watch!

So I will be giving more info on this new Asian horror film soon. I also have some online interviews coming up talking about RENOVATION, BENJAMIN, RESURRECTION, SILVER LAKE and LOCKED IN A ROOM. I’ve very excited about the product heading out this year!

I’m also helping to produce on this Asian horror film and it will also represent CDI’s (www.cdiproductions.com)  first international co-production. Watch CDI site for new updates on this exciting project!

I hear the Texas-based http://www.djperryfanclub.com will be featuring a new leading lady this week. I’m not going to tell you:) But she is a very talented actresses whom I had the great pleasure of working with on BENJAMIN (the NYC action dramedy). Many new updates on Pepper’s fan site so check it out and tell her anything you would like to see.

Other than that I’ve been working development and reading acting offers. I’ll continue to try to make some good choices in 2011. I feel as I got involved with mostly good projects last year. I’m also close to announcing some CDI work programs. I have a few programs that I need to have final discussions on with my CDI partner Jeff Kennedy. One area will be our Commercial Division. Feel free to look at our Commercial Division on the CDI site.

http://cdiproductions.com/divisions/commercial-division/

We’ve been doing some good work and so if you have need and want some talented folks to produce your doc, infomercial, online promo, music video, making of or TV shows let us know. Feature film is a given:)

The bottom line is growth is coming. New growth to each of us! Just like my pet redwood tree “RED” (original name) who grew 16 inches this past year. I look forward to see what new growth happens for us all on this next trip around the sun.

But…always remember to once in a while let go of the stresses of life, hold your arms high above your head and ENJOY THE RIDE! You never know when it is your time to slide back into the station.

Humbled and Happy

The rain is coming down and I’m very happy that yesterday was lawn day. I have grass seed down and so this should help. I’ve also been collecting Lilac pedals for some new wine I’m going to try making. If you want to talk about Zen it is one pedal at a time while either talking on the phone or reading lines. I realized that 15 quarts is a LOT of pedals and also that in mass they almost have a waxy feel…ODD.

So I’m happy to announce the fact that the project that I’ve been forced to be hush, hush on is now going public with their PR and so now I can share. I submitted blindly for a role in a very non-descriptive religious film about the time we had finished filming the 1st leg of “Book of Ruth” and I sent materials for the biblical character of Judas. I thought after playing nice guy ‘Benjamin’ I would enjoy another biblical feature but thought maybe a bad guy of sorts would be cool. I sent it off and immediately got no response. Like that? So fast forward 6 months and one Sunday out of the blue I get contacted by this production company with a synopsis and breakdown of this project called “In Our Time” and they said I was of interest to them. Come to find out I was one of 27 actors they were looking at for the lead role of Jesus in this studio picture. Funny thing is about this time Ray our main producer on “Book of Ruth” starts talking about how Pureflix and TBN and random folks are remarking to him how much I remind them of Jesus. So I agree to non disclose anything and read the script. EPIC. Now they want me to talk with producer/writer and explain how I see the character and story line. I honestly think I have a good grasp on the heart and soul of the role and explain my take. I guess I was the only person to pick up on a few major elements. From there I’m told I’m one of the seven they have narrowed down to and the front runner. They became versed in my work and I did a few voice recordings for them and well…the rest is history as they like to say.

I’m happy that I can share a first PR announcement at Christian Cinema and many more will follow. I’m excited that fate also put two of my friends in this film. I was asked about my thoughts on Mr. Rance Howard and Terry Jernigan who were being considered for roles. I think people scan around actors they want to use to get ideas for casting but that said Terry Jernigan has been peppering his career with faith films and they saw him starring in “Pilgrams Progress” I think it was.  Rance has worked so much it doesn’t surprise me. I think one of the producers on this film was on “Angels and Demons” and knew Rance that way. Either way it will be nice to work alongside two very good friends of mine.

I will say that the process of being JUST AN ACTOR has been humbling. I realize that with my alpha personality I’m a team player but I have a control aspect to me. I have found it hard at times and frustrating at times to be JUST TALENT. I have made a new vow to try to improve communication between production and cast and crew because being in the dark on a need to know info basis is not fun:) So the experience has been good for me. Also I just worked on lines but just tried to ignore the project because no point in wasting energy mulling over and over on something. When it was time they would contact me and away we would go. So I’m told we start very soon and I’ll get at least a week notice. The 1st leg of the shoot is in Bulgaria I think so it would be nice to know so I can get my home life in order. Enjoy the 1st PR and I’ll let you know more soon.

The talks on WILD MICHIGAN resurrection are going very well. The old project was put down to rest and we are also making moves to bring some justice to those responsible for the 1st false start. As I was told, it was not the time for “Wild Michigan” but we are casting up the final stars and I’m looking to come off “In Our Time” and go into pre-production on “Wild Michigan” but I will know more soon.

Development on the other CDI projects are going great and so I would love to put a whole slate of films into motion. On the personal, my dad is recovering well and can drive again. Remember your mothers out there this Sunday if you have them with you spend some time with them and if they are gone remember them fondly.

Have a great weekend.
