7 Updates – The Harvest of Hard Work
So last week was productive but also a week of dealing with the major absence of one personality from our furry pack Luke. I had fires burning both outside and in the office via the wood-burning stove. With Daphne and Lulu close by I swept leaves and organized the packing of yard items. Luke use to love to lay in leaves and patches of sun moving several times during the day. Daphne and Lulu did this with a few random tossing of the little ball for a chase. I also this week got a few supplies for my next batch of wine using our wild grapes, hops, some mulberries and a touch of rhubarb. I also got the materials for making dark ale for the winter months. I want to thank you all for letting me talk on the personal last week. Those personal issues all play into our art and our motivation. This week I’m going to do a “Just the facts” post because I’m going to do more yard work later on this beautiful fall day. MSU pulled out a win yesterday but the Lions have a week off. Let’s look at some updates…
- I signed contracts on two stories I wrote for inclusion in an upcoming book on horses called THE HORSE OF MY DREAMS, by Revell Books. I want to thank Callie Smith Grant for inviting and accepting my two stories. It’s showing me another way to use my imagination and storytelling beyond just screenplay. It will be a print and electronic book releasing this fall and it might make an excellent Christmas gift.
- I finished my 1stofficial draft of LOST HEART. This screenplay will be our Spring 2018 film and the 1stof a new deal with BMG.
- I also had a meeting over CDI non-family/faith content that went good. They have interest in a Sci Fi script I’m working on and a few other properties. It is great when you have a good meeting. I’ve had a few go South because of people looking for leverage by kicking at the production value or looking for an angle. But this company is producing and releasing for some great A list production companies. I was treated as an equal and that is a good start.
- I also might be digging into writing on another biblical adventure this winter. I’m going to be having some discussions on that this week. I have been actively talking with literary representation because I would like to have a more streamlined process. I have screenplays I don’t plan to produce so I should sell them off. Many talent and their production companies are looking for strong content. I have to do a new literary resume as an intro to the work.
- There is interest in both WILD FAITH and THE CHRIST SLAYER for a studio backed limited theatrical release. Wild Faith will most likely get that on the way to our home video. We have a wonderful deal underway that includes an additional of a celebrity narrator to our film. The narrator is our “Henry” grown into a man, thinking back on this and perhaps many forthcoming tales. The TV series is a real possibility and if so I’m excited by the Michigan work.
- The Christ Slayer is in process of color correction set up. Also sound and music work progresses along with a little dialogue clean up. I hope we can get the studio-backed theatrical. It ‘s depending upon if the excusing of a HOLD BACK clause can happen. What that means is that our digital and on-demand is set up along with DVD release. There is usually a window of time given between theatrical and streaming. With the target holiday being Easter all these targeted release dates are being pushed together. The film is epic and emotional and I sincerely hope it gets the larger theatrical with the home video release.
- To tie into the above topic – our MBF: Man’s Best Friend film also has the early interest and I see this film also rolling into the theatrical deal. All these films were built upon a home video deal but now as our distributor rides into theatrical – we do also. It will be a true blessing to have these films brought to theatres all over the USA/world. We’ll just keep focusing on telling the stories. But I did see a rough 20 plus minutes of the film and it left me with a big smile. The final three scenes I watched included Greg Mason, Tim Abell and Jim Gruelich. I cannot say enough how thankful I am to be surrounded by such great artists. The movie is nowhere near the climax and the power in the scenes is just popping.
In summary – we’re also exploring other expansion with our website and merchandise. It is a time of wrapping up business and developing new business. ‘ROCKY’ Could Have Been A Faith Film and Other Coffee Ramblings…by DJ Perry
The chilly fall has settled into Michigan making sipping coffee or hot cider even more enjoyable. Now is when I have to start thinking of the winter ahead. The stuff that will have to be put away and stored. The firewood for the coming snow. Even the change of clothes to heavier layers, is a normal process in Michigan. I think last week we discussed something which was the delay in shooting our next feature by a quarter. The funds are there and so many would want to rush to production, the fun part. But, we’re putting the icing on the cake for a wonderful distribution deal on WILD FAITH. It has been a touch slower since I’ve had the joy of working with the Hollywood agent system. But, in the end it will be worth it and will directly have an effect on the TV series. Upcoming 2019 will see the major organizing of the release and push on the series. We are planning to shoot in Michigan. Likely a series of shows shot in a tight production block. It’s new waters for me so I’m learning something new every day.
Tomorrow we’ll announce via PR our recent Crown Award and the Burbank International Film Fest win for ‘Best Faith Film’ and while I would have loved to have it gone against all the films – they work by genres. But WILD FAITH is just an accurate look at 1870’s life. As the screenwriter I did not add any overdue FAITH. People we’re just more living in tune with their faith during that time period. Life was more wooly and I think people had more life and death encounters be it disease, drought, famine, bear attacks – you get the point. I love the faith and inspirational themes. ROCKY being one of my favorite illustrations of that. On his way to the fight – the father priest throws down and few blessings. Yes. ROCKY could be a faith film and it would have surely won ‘Best Inspirational’ as I’ve seen it inspire masses and I’ve been inspired by that film. My point is, I’ve never set out to make a ‘Faith Film’ and I’ve never set out to not make a ‘Faith Film” – I’ve told a story. Characters in almost all stories are confronted by a situation that tests their faith thus the relatable conflict.
Dorothy in The Wizard of OZ must find her faith. Indiana Jones fights to keep his faith versus his scientific reasoning, Men vs shark in JAWS, puts faith out there to be chewed upon as a topic. I think every film made about mankind has faith woven into it. So, is it that the content must have X amount ‘faith’ in it? Judges in chairs that spin around and hit a button if your film has the required ‘faith’? I appreciate it mostly, the acceptance to our films. But because the story, characters, situations, lessons were all something that were touched upon. That shed a bit of light on our faults projected onto a screen, so we can better understand ourselves. Deep. I know. Occasionally, I feel quite grand with my profession, pride like a good woodworker, or any other artist. Mostly, I still feel like that kid, make believing with my neighborhood friends living out our own STRANGER THINGS life.
I’ve changed some in my screenwriting, I’ve noted. My earlier self was darker, heavier and nihilistic. My mom often questioning, why I kept dying in my films. Now, I’ve always had a funny, lighter side to my personality, ask anyone who really knows me. But, most of my writing came in my moments of solitary. Also writers in Michigan benefit from our long winters but the end result is often PSYCHO or THE SHINING writing in nature. Those previously mentioned films are two of my favorite for the season. Another side note: I do want to do another horror film but it has to be good. By good I mean story. Creating horror films in the handful of story formulas is like a rite of passage. The lovers of that genre cannibalize the artists with dastardly reviews. But meet them in person and they’ve always been very nice. Maybe because they saw you on camera foaming at the mouth and swinging an axe. Anyway, I was saying that I enjoy the laughter and smiles. I recall many showings of WICKED SPRING whereas people wept in the theater. We did that with our story. But I see so much negativity and anxiety with people not coping to our new world. A world where we’re more communication-connected than ever before BUT we’re not. FRIENDS have a new definition thanks to FACEBOOK but my definition stays the same. I want to be part of making people think, smile, laugh and still occasionally cry, if that comes with an enlightenment.
The ‘Faith Film’ anti-goodhousekeeping seal of quality is being shattered as more storytellers (without labels) are returning to tell stories that their grandmother, mothers and fathers would enjoy. Ben Hur (The Original) and Ten Commandments (The Classics) were always on TV when we had our family Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter gatherings. There are great organizations that are rising to recognize and award this kind of content. I always worry about censorship, we can choose to watch what we want. But if a demand is there, look at the rise in METV, Heroes & Icons, and the rise of the faith market. People are casting their votes with their rentals and purchases. I feel most honored by the online communications from viewers having powerful emotions invoked from our stories. It is a dream to have holidays where the films play and families bond over a watch. My goal is to make a few classics. All of them might not make it but we’ll give our ‘best effort’ every time.
I was reminded yesterday when inquiring about a director whom a close associate had worked with – their last film isn’t done. It hasn’t been completed in a matter of several years. As an actor, I’ve got two films shot in recent years, one a co-starring role, not finished. I’ve got a call, meeting, catch up with a director friend who’s trying to finish one of two projects we did together in the very distant past. It bothers me occasionally talking someone’s new project(s) when those people have loose strings to tie up. There are many films about that don’t interest me as a viewer, but I always tip my hat to finishing. Finishing is a skill needed in this industry, without it, suffering. But it sounds like my old friend is trying to finish, so that’s a good thing.
This week I finished my first solid draft on our next script with BMG entitled LOST HEART. In meetings with our distributor, they really liked a concept made easier that I had written something in the same vein. But I wanted to apply some of the growth I had made mentioned above. Same log line but different script. I had a wonderful time creating this story and it became so alive with characters and a world, other’s will long to visit. Jeff Kennedy and I, my partner in CDI, semi-retired – always had that as a goal. To create a world and invite people inside it. The CDI first five – really helped hone this craft. You have to BELIEVE in the world. Another 2019 goal is to get Jeff Kennedy back into a director’s chair. I have a few good ideas but they will require a good pow wow or two.
MBF has been in editing. They shot a few pick up establishing shots and transitions this week. Always good to do this once you get into the edit and really see what could be added. This film I’m so proud of. It showcases and pleads for better treatment of our war vets and dogs, that can heal us. We continue to release official stills from this film. Part 3 has a bold name. But the title has a meaning that audiences will discover, maybe not what they thought. I’m excited to say that Part 3 of The Quest Trilogy is coming all together. I watched a recent 5k work flow version with 98% VFX. Color Correction and conforming still lie ahead. ADR, music and sound design are steadily under construction. I’ve been working with the distributor and their marketing team as we prepare for release in early 2019. I was really happy with the story, smiling throughout. I love watching artists friends give moving performances. That’s what we want deep down. To captivate and transfer that emotion via story. This will be an exciting watch and so again, catch up – parts 1 (FORTY NIGHTS) & 2 (CHASING THE STAR) on Pureflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Christian Cinema, Parables TV….and so on. To our cast and crew, it will be worth the wait.

Finishing vs Starting – Biz Wrap Up
The hazelnut coffee sits beside me bringing my computer in my head online with each sip. I’ve been returning to action since returning from Burbank. So I’ve been trying to plan out my fall. I’ve been considering all options before us while moving ahead. We’ll be announcing a few exciting developments including a production deal.
Right now my focus is on finishing the distribution deal on WILD FAITH, which includes a developing TV series. As many of you know and we’ll expand upon in a PR release – we won ‘Best Faith Film’ at Burbank International Film Festival.
My next priority is the finishing and releasing of part 3 of THE QUEST TRILOGY entitled “The Christ Slayer”. This film is the final chapter in our biblical adventure series. I again play Jesus and this film has the most VFX to date. Bridgestone Multimedia Group has it marked as their flagship for Easter 2019. I’m very excited for audiences to experience this film. Director Nathaniel Nose has done a wonderful job with it and Dennis Therrian is composing an incredible score and doing sound design.
MBF: Man’s Best Friend is also in editing and will move into post music and sound design as The Christ Slayer exits post. We’ve been releasing official stills and a teaser will be released before Christmas.
I’ve also been writing a new script LOST HEART that I had intended to shoot this fall. But with the post schedule and my writing moving a tad slower because of the wrist (cast off now a splint for 30 days) – I think it may push to 2019. I want to do it right and that requires prep. But the script is still being worked and will likely be done this month. I just need to look at the entire slate and how we want to roll things out. Lots of moving pieces to consider. I think we might start doing a few table reads on possible scripts also.
Acting-wise I’m starting to feel the urge again to be in front of the camera. As always it has to be the right story. Outside the biz I’ve been enjoying the approaching fall. I’ve harvested hops and wild grapes for one of my new wines. We’ve got a few squash that will be a good addition to the dinner table. With no soccer today for me I’m going to try to put a one-handed mow on the yard. The wood stove might get a working tonight and so fire wood gathering and cutting will be more important in the coming weeks.

Our first theatre dates are March 16th-22nd at Celebration Cinema in Lansing and Grand Rapids, MI (Woodland).
International Christian Film Festival – This is the Oscar’s of the family/faith genre. Last year we had “Forty Nights” our 1st installment in THE QUEST TRILOGY nominated for Best Film, Best Lead Actor (Rance Howard), Best Score and Most Inspirational (which we won). Watch on Amazon Prime and other platforms.
This year the second installment “Chasing the Star” about the journey of the magi was nominated for Best Film, Best Score, Best Screenplay, Best Lead Actor (Garry Nation) and Most Inspirational (again) and so we’ll see.
But…like having two children on competing teams – “Wild Faith” our western was also entered this year. It is nominated for Best Film, Best Lead Actor (Shane Hagedorn), Best Actress (Lauren Lastrada) and Best Director (Jesse Low).
There is strong competition not just amongst our two films but from amazing talent like Ray Liotta, Judge Reinhold and Ashley Judd. I’m honored to be amongst the nominated films and to have two “children” gathering such attention is humbling. So Collective Development Inc. has 9 nominations and that’s something to be proud of.
You can watch “Chasing the Star” right now on Amazon Prime and several other participating platforms. “Wild Faith” will play theatrical events all Spring/Summer (I want to play a drive in) and will release to home video in the Fall on the run up to Christmas. The 3rd installment in THE QUEST TRILOGY – “The Christ Slayer” will be complete in August and play theaters on the run up to Christmas. Our distributor has the home video release set to target Easter 2019.
A busy season of releasing. But that also means we need NEW product. We’re a touch behind my ideal timeline for our next film “Man’s Best Friend” (MBF) but the account is open and money flowing in. We need the last few units committed before we move forward because once we start we finish.
In additional to that we have several developing projects. I had meetings right up to end-of-the-day Friday which will without a doubt bring new endeavors to the CDI tribe.
Other developments –
I’ve never acted in a music video. I was there when it all started MTV that is – and I like to see that the art of storytelling against a song is still going strong. Maybe not like in the heyday of music TV but still alive and kicking. I was approached about being hired to participate in a music video. They provided their earlier work, the work of the artist and a professionally written script. The subject matter holds some meaning to me and it felt – right. So I gave my interest and this coming week I’ll participate in my first music video front of camera. I’ll talk more about it once they are ready. Not my song or production so I’m letting them PR as they will. I’m sincerely excited about the project. I had just said a few weeks ago, if interested in me for something come with a professional proposal. It also worked amazingly with my schedule. It’s only a one day obligation so it really was a perfect storm. I’m looking forward to it.
The writing and deal making will continue this week. I’m excited that first cast and crew will get to see their combined work watching “Wild Faith” on the big screen. My family, friends and fans can also enjoy the film starting this week. (Friday) It’s always good to see one of our movies of with my parents. I think it helps justify all the worry they had in me as a dreamer building those “castles in thin air” teen/young man. It shows that I’m truly happy and doing what I was most passionate about in life. And for that I feel like the luckiest man alive on some days.
I’m going to continue to enjoy this day and rest my mind for the crazy week ahead. I’m not a person that needs all the hoopla of camera and red carpets but I will participate on these few occasions to collectively toast our finished story. I see it like a graduation party whereas we’re sending our “movie child” out into the world hoping it will do what it can to make our world a better place.

Wisdom & Wishes for Christmas
It’s Christmas Eve! I want to welcome all the new readers from Indonesia, Turkey, and Israel. I also want to thank all of you for stopping by for a sip of coffee and some ramblings from ole DJ Perry. Artists all over the world have been responsible for reminding us what is best in us. With the new year fast approaching CHANGE is upon us. Now I’m a person who understands change is always in motion but I prefer a slow evolving change versus radical sudden change. It’s funny that I’ve read and studied many ancient and insightful writings. I like to read a little and meditate on the ideas presented. Lately I’ve been reading a few pages each night from ‘The Tao of Pooh‘ which takes deep meaningful thoughts and presents them in comical easy-to-digest bits. All of us will face, are facing change as of this moment. The holidays here have many of us taking that time out to ponder, praise what we did right and project an image of what we would like different moving ahead to 2018. Let’s look at a few sayings from Pooh that unique bear.
“When you know and respect your own inner nature, you know where you belong. You also know where you don’t belong.”
“Where I belong” – to me is a known path not a final destination. I belong as a storyteller for ALL people. Religion, gender, race and political affiliation not withstanding. I want to help all people find themselves, their best selves. I don’t belong in the cut-throat game of what has become hateful game of red-rover. Just because you’re spewing hate for a good cause does not absolve you – you’re plugged into that cycle. All hate has feedback in the loop. Feel that feedback and know when to unplug and remove yourself. Feedback like fear is not a bad thing if you listen to it. Maybe discovering where you belong is to discover where you don’t belong.
“Things just happen in the right way, at the right time. At least when you let them, when you work with circumstances instead of saying, ‘This isn’t supposed to be happening this way,’ and trying harder to make it happen some other way.”
Fate has one floating down a river, sometimes sleepily and sometimes amongst rough waters – but you’re flowing to where you need to be. To worry about what has not happened. To worry how we’ll react to something that hasn’t happened. I have faith that I’ll know what course of action when I get there. Leadership even of the self is taking in all the feedback and deciding on a course of action. Sometimes if the circumstances say the river is jammed and impassable – you have to get out of the river and carry your canoe a short while. Up ahead is clear waters to navigate. You put your boat back in the water and continue your journey. Had you been in refusal to work with your circumstance as in “I’m not getting out of the river” – “I don’t want to walk a ways” – you might still be sitting stagnate looking helpless at the log jam. Faith is not always understanding but moving forward. Have some faith in yourself. Know that detours are just that – detours not roadblocks. Often they are the only answer to navigating around those things blocking our path.
“The surest way to become Tense, Awkward, and Confused is to develop a mind that tries too hard – one that thinks too much.”
Think less and feel more. Knowledge can be accumulated and wisdom is the application of it and learning from its results good or bad. Sometimes you have to not stare directly at the issue. Too much intense focus can give you blind spots. Keeping the RAY on full power obsessively trying to see a reason, pattern, purpose or direction before the time of actual action can just create confusion and feedback that will make a person’s inner balance seem out-of-phase and disrupted. Learn to control this 90% of the time and a great peace and power will be yours.
FILM UPDATES
This has been a wonderful holiday season to look back on what a productive year it has been. Our distributor has heavily pushed FORTY NIGHTS and CHASING THE STAR. The latter reached #2 on Amazon’s list for Faith and Family. Parables TV has been playing both films twice a day. I know we’ll see the day where once the third film, THE CHRIST SLAYER releases – all three will be playing together. Expansion into the UK, Netherlands (Family 7) and many other foreign territories continues into the new year. Part 3 goes into post music and sound in Jan 2018 and will be done around Easter 2018. We’ll also be releasing the first poster and theatrical trailer. soon into the new year.
But BEFORE that we’ll have the spot light on WILD FAITH. The end credits are about locked and the last tweaks of color correction will be applied next week. But aside from that and our ongoing mixing of sound levels – WILD FAITH is done. I will call it complete once those final changes are done. But we’ll be meeting to discuss the premiere showings and the theatricals here soon. The new exciting trailer for WILD FAITH will also be dropping soon. Perhaps between Christmas and New Year Eve or perhaps on New Year’s Day itself. I need to see exactly where we’re at.
Development – More development than you can shake a stick at. MBF (Man’s Best Friend) is the next one up. We collected and deposited more funds on this upcoming film. We still have a short ways to go but the holidays created a pause. I’m sure as we hit the new year many will be ready to move on new endeavors. This powerful film MBF will push many people’s dramatic ranges including myself. I’m up for the challenge as each of you should be. I’m excited for some of the new directions we’ll be taking as a company. Also we’ll work hard to keep doing more of what perhaps some of you are already enjoying from us at CDI. About the 15th of Jan. we should have the basic web platform up for the new Collective Development Inc. site.

FINAL WRAP UP & FUNNY STORY
So in year’s past I was never the right pick for commercial work. I was always ‘becoming’ someone and so my headshot never were up-to-date. The words were always too superficial. Maybe my voice had an adult tone that didn’t fit my youthful face? I don’t know the reasoning but commercials were never my thing. But friends of mine that had worked for a great non-profit heard that the company was having casting issues looking for the right actor for a company promotional video. They had not found that ‘right person’ and while I was a touch younger vs their breakdown – I was approached about a read. So the next morning I threw down a quick take and sent it off. I call it sketching – quick truth shoot with no over-thinking. If you hit part of the role and spark their interest, they will usually contact back. I don’t have time for 14 page auditions – except JJ send the new SW script and I’ll throw some reads down:) Okay. I know you have cooking and presents to wrap, I’ll hurry up. I will credit good writing for the piece where usually the depth is just not there. I felt the read. I gave the read. I was the read, I got the part. So I was a professor in the piece and they dressed me to suit the part. Some pants/cords fit me like they had made them for me. Add a blue shirt to bounce the baby-blues and a blazer and were all good. We nailed the shoot with a great little crew. I thanked everyone and went home. I was about to eat some sweet potato soup when I spread my napkin out across those cords. Oh my! “I stole these from a non-profit!” I originally wore my dockers to the shoot but after giving the shirt and blazer back, I felt like I was wearing my clothes and I was ready to roll. How many people watched me walking around saying, “DJ Perry is going to steal those pants.” I sent a message to the Production Manager. They were part of the directors stash of clothes. He said they looked great on me and Merry Christmas. Ha! But I really did enjoy myself. Who knows maybe 2018 will bring a few more surprises like that. I’m talking about the commercial not the pirated corduroy pants.

Coffee talk on Effective Communication, CUJO and Films COMING SOON!
The soccer season has ended, the garden harvest is slowing and the leaves are starting to fall. But this heat wave seems hot as any of our true summer days. On a positive note I’ve been trying to master this new grill and get my temps under control and such. Last night I had a very successful go at pork chops. I had my old grill down to a science and so it’s like re-learning and developing a process with the new grill. I’m going to refill the coffee and we can chat on some of the developments last week. I think I’m going to just throw them out there – updates.
CHASING THE STAR – A new marketing campaign is starting Oct 10th via our distributor, driving traffic to the AMAZON. We’ve also been invited to again submit to International Christian Film Festival for 2018. It’s been submitted and now we wait. I think we’ll know more in March.
FORTY NIGHTS – We’re just finishing new theatrical licensing deals for this film in Nov. in Texas and CHASING THE STAR in December. I do think this is in Gary Nation backyard. So unless it clashes with possible shoot dates (Is that a dropped hint?) he could attend.
Both these films are being pushed for the holiday season and I think audiences will enjoy them.
Here is a good lesson from the last couple weeks. There is a program that shows faith-content who approached us about possible licensing. Now after some communication , we requested some clarification. What followed was a poorly communicated email that after being quite offending they apologized and blamed some personal issues. OK. STOP. If I’m sending an email communication to HBO (Which I did) I would NEVER respond in the way this person did if I was trying to build a bridge to business. IF I had some personal issue that was going to paint my communications – STEP AWAY FROM THE EMAIL! DO NOT COMMUNICATE until you get your head straight. I was just surprised that once again this is someone claiming a mission/path that’s inline with Christianity yet they communicate like that. JUDGMENTAL. CONDESCENDING. RUDE. Not good business practice. It could have just been a bad week but if that’s the case – don’t communicate. I doubt this avenue will work out but I’m good with that.
Let’s talk positive. I went to a biz event in Grand Rapids with my attorney/producing amigo John Mashni at CHOP & HUE. They have done color correction and some great VFX credit work for a few of our films. It was great to partake in their event and success. I saw a few familiar faces and met a few new ones. I really enjoyed myself. I don’t break away from the work too often but I’m glad I did. I will try to attend a few more events but I always have so much to do and when I take a break it is usually in solitude.
The Christ Slayer – the VFX work on this picture is moving along in strength. We started working on our first official poster ideas this week. We should have a locked picture with VFX by the end of the year.
That fits nicely with WILD FAITH that will be finishing up at year’s end. The response to the poster, trailer and BTS has been strong. I’m still looking to launch the TV series but I think it will take studios/networks watching the final film. The characters and world are so endearing it makes you want to see more. I did get some creative writing on show #2 this past week. We will see how it all plays out.
MBF (Man’s Best Friend) is our next CDI film. We had an announcement that Anthony Hornus will be directing with Jesse Aragon serving as director of photography. Our biz commits are flowing in and this week we’ll start announcing cast. We have two possible shoot windows – one that is before the holidays (Nov) and one that is after (Jan/Feb). It all depends on the speed of the financial commits. We’ve got two more weeks to push and see what will work best for production. That is a key question that aspiring producers should get use to asking. WHAT IS BEST FOR PRODUCTION? Many inexperienced producers make decisions that put production second. That is often where trouble starts. I’m so excited about the cast and crew lining up and I know once again we’ll put something strong onscreen.
This week was also spend prepping some other endeavors. One being a certain Civil War film that will be making its way back into the market in 2018. Also the original script I wrote for Wild Faith was turned into a book. I will be releasing the book to Amazon under the original title. The script was adapted into a new script for budget before heading into production. Instead of having the author Dee Freeman redo the book to match the new movie, I decided to leave the book story AS IS. I think it gives an interesting look at the movie that never was but allows a look at what inspired – WHAT IS.
Speaking of books I know the KNIGHT CHILLS book is now for sale at Comic Cons and I hope a new generation of readers/viewers experience the story.

As we welcome in the fall season I’ve been circling back and watching a few of the old horror films. This week I took a watch on Darkest Nights. It was fun to return to that mango estate in the Philippines and try to survive the darkest night. I miss all my cast and crew mates. It was a one-of-a-kind experience and I’m thankful to have had it.
I get asked quite often if I will return to horror genre and the answer is of course, when I find the right story. I’ve had a few filmmakers upset at me because I passed on their film. SCRIPT. SCRIPT. SCRIPT. Execution is an issue for all filmmakers. It’s hard to take the words and make it all come to life but when the script is not strong it makes the process harder. And many directors are also the writer so they can take any feedback very personal. I understand this ‘protectiveness’ and if the company is happy with the script and you’re not, a polite pass is the best option. But sometimes even the polite pass can bring out someones anger. I’m hoping for a strong script every time one is submitted to me for acting. We as actors all want that. So to get back on track, I’ve been asked about my return to horror genre and the answer is when the right deal comes across the desk.
I had some fans ask about the C.U.J.O. reboot. I know that King’s team is working to reel back in some of his ‘rights’ to his classic films CUJO included. I know that talks are continuing with the Sunn Classic Pictures team. How will the chips fall is unknown. I would love to be part of a King project someday in the future. Will it be a C.U.J.O. reboot? That is not up to me but I will let you all know what I find out.
Outside of all this work I’ve been in exploratory talks over obtaining a literary agent. I’m about to go into production on my 5th script and I’ve got several scripts I would be willing to sell off. It will all come together. I know I have more calls to catch up on this coming week. For those that I did not get back to – rest assured I will.

‘Chasing the Star’ Release, Behind-the-Scenes and the NEW CDI Project INFO.
A little peanut butter toast and coffee to greet me on this fine morning. Last night I got to toast my longtime friend and film associate Dean Teaster for his 60th birthday. His property was looking just amazing. You can tell he’s put some serious time into it and it’s a very zen place to chillax. The tree fort is amazing and the cleared forest around it with the strings of lights, looked magical. A classic rock band, catered BBQ and a HUGE bar fueled the gathering into the night. I released my first burning Chinese lantern (pretty cool) and also watched the BIG fight to end my night. I hope my buddy will enjoy many more trips around the sun. A great time was had by all.
This week was full of film developments on many fronts.
The Quest Trilogy –
THE CHRIST SLAYER continues to move down post production looking to release next year. Meanwhile most of the attention is currently on CHASING THE STAR. The official release date is 9/5/17 but a few retailers have released early. Here’s the first Faith and General Market sites that you can rent/buy from.
Simply Grace magazine will run a featured story on Chasing the Star in November and Television On Demand becomes available Oct. 2nd – additionally were once again invited to attend the International Christian Film Festival 2018. This week business will continue to charge forward. At home – Our beans are slowing but the tomatoes are coming on fast and furious. My one pumpkin ‘Jack’ that was attacked has turned orange and so we do have one! The rhubarb/mulberry wine is ready to rack to the secondary. After a time in the secondary it goes to bottles. I’m also going to look at when we can do the shake siding on the office/fort. I really put in some time on the yard this past week which included discovering a large ground bee nest. I only got stung three times but now that’s been taken care of. Our furry boy Luke is on the mend and I hope that trend continues. Also today we have one of our last soccer games of our season before play offs. We’re looking like we might have low numbers today but we will battle with whatever warriors show up. Time to refill the coffee cup. Have a great week ahead.

Holiday Weekend Updates
Well last week we had a nice jump in readers and I’m not sure exactly why that was – maybe people like the more random format? I just came in from the second full day of working in the yard. I gave a good mow with trimming and we put in the garden. Also built a new garden entrance and basically just got the summer stuff into full swing. As noted before the HOPS are growing like mad and we’re about to have raspberry explosion. The mulberries are also prepping to ripen soon. This year we did more tomatoes, beans, squash, peppers and more. It makes for some really nice salads and sandwiches. This year we’re also trying some various lettuces. I’m also going to plant some gourds and will try pumpkins again. The pack has enjoyed the outside time. I hope to also be putting the last of the upper siding on the office in the coming months. I’ve been doing a lot of organization and rearranging. I’m just trying to get ready for the projects that lie ahead. Let’s try the random updates again.
Sir Kallio stalks in “Knight Chills”
The book for “Knight Chills” is on target to release this year and I was given the book art that was commissioned by the distribution company and it is COOL! I will look at giving a sneak peek in the weeks ahead.
A deal for the other CDI books might also be in the works so some of the other scripts that had been novelized might be heading to you. Ghost Town, Wild Faith – might be a few to get things rolling.
I also saw a first mock-up draft of the new CDI website. I’m excited about all the interactive attributes that will allow for a much better experience.
I’m beginning talks with a few other distributors for R-rated content within CDI. The thrillers and horror films past, present and future need to have the same flow as our family/faith distribution. So those talks will be happening this Summer.

On set “Chasing the Star” with Logan Kishi
“Chasing the Star” was delivered to our distributor BMG this past week to prep it for the Sept. 5th national launch. Exploring some new theatrical runs as the Michigan run came to a close.
“The Christ Slayer” has a first edit! We’ll be reviewing that this coming week. We got to watch a select scene from the film as a teaser and I was very happy with what I saw. Trailer and poster will be up next.
“Wild Faith” we’ll be reviewing the sound design this coming week as music is preparing to go full speed ahead. This trailer and film is generating a lot of hype. The film is deserving as you’ll all see once it’s released. We’re exploring all the possibilities for the ongoing series.
I’ve been working hard on making writing time and I’m closing in on a feature script that I feel strongly about both creatively and business-wise. I’m also in talks on a few possible paid work-for-hire gigs. I am looking forward to getting back in front of the camera just looking for the right role. After coming off “The Christ Slayer” I’m looking for a really strong script/role to sink my teeth into.
I hope you spend some time with family and friends. I have a few more gatherings with just that tonight and tomorrow. I think I might need to shut down for 15 minutes. Just a quick checking of the eye lids for holes.

Peace, Purpose and Progress!
It is a peaceful Saturday and I’ve finally gotten a chance to sit down and spend a few moments with all of you. This last week was extremely full of meetings, handing off of materials, in-studio work and many other matters of business. But let’s take a moment to discuss the topic everyone is speaking on.
I think that most of the headlines are currently focused on the terrible happenings in France. We can watch the misery and yet it still feels distant until it hits home. I remember how I felt when one of my best friends from the neighborhood growing up – got caught in that Boston bombing. He suffered some wounds but nothing too severe. I would guess the thoughts of that day would be the worst. But I imagine my pain had he died or lost limbs like so many. We watch on TV these masses of people fleeing savage behavior in their homeland, but imagine it was yours. I wonder where or when we all failed? Where tribes of people with differing beliefs exalted themselves above one another using their religion as justification. I believe if people truly anticipated a final judgement of sorts that was based upon how they lived their lives and treated people – the world could be a better place. So much violence being inflicted over something as simple as differing opinions on paths of faith.
As the possibility of life on other planets becomes more real versus just science fiction – perhaps that will change things. Now some scientists realistically fear attracting higher life forms, like alien hunters. Maybe if another life form started seeing all mankind as something to be harvested, removed or eliminated – maybe our little differences between us would lessen. Religion should be about tradition and something intimate between a person and who/what gives them their peace and purpose. I don’t like to talk judgmental politics or religion – my place is as a storyteller. But violence against innocent people is once again just a horrible example of the worst that mankind has to offer. It’s been happening for a long time to many tribes all over the world. This recent tragedy is just a current reminder of how horrible we can be to one another. If a religion pits people versus people it was likely created by people to serve people – not divinity. If your organized religion endorses this lack of tolerance – question the source.
Enough of that topic. Let’s look at some of the movie updates from the week.

“Bestseller” – Artwork with the distributor has started and I believe our national street date will be March 2016. Meanwhile we’re traveling to Grayling, MI next. That might be followed by Kalamazoo and the Detroit area.
“Donors” is releasing Feb. 2nd, 2016. EXCITING!

“40 Nights” the distributor and marketing teams have started work on marketing materials. I do believe Wal-Mart is assisting with the marketing art so we know they’re one of the participating retailers. Tomorrow we’ll release the 1st of a series of short teasers. Meanwhile we have music and sound design still full speed ahead. VFX work is finishing up so we can lay it all in and color correct. The next couple weeks we PUSH hard!
The “Chasing the Star” script was the center of meetings this week. We also have been doing a good amount of west coast casting since we’re shooting in AZ. We’ve been excited by some of the reads we’ve seen and we’ll be announcing some new casting choices this week. The business paperwork will be signed this month and we’ll start putting paper under people next month. In time for a Merry Christmas with this Christmas themed film.
I’ve got final paperwork for the distribution of the “Knight Chills” book and film. A comic book/graphic novel could also go into play. The sequel script is being worked on and may get some attention once I finish this. “From Venus” might also get this treatment.
“An Ordinary Killer” is getting remastered to prepare for a re-release. It will be the film showing Nov. 19th at our Sanctuary Spirits mixer. That is in Grand Ledge, MI and there is an event page on Facebook.

C.U.J.O., CDI Updates and Carrying On
What a beautiful day. I was out-of-town for a couple of days overseeing a commercial project. CDI has done a few select commercial projects in the past. It was a nice change of pace and extremely informative. It was for the manufacturing industry and I was totally impressed by what machines built by man are capable of. The process to create some of the common things we use is anything but common. The trip was enjoyable save some traffic which I’m not quite use to. But once home it was nice to return to business as usual. I’ve got some good updates but before we get into all that I will comment briefly on a much talked about event here in Michigan – the end of our film incentives. I see many film folk speaking like the end of everything film is upon us. When I started out filmmaking we had very few filmmakers in our state. (Michigan) The passion is here and if people want it to keep it thriving that is done by good business and art. I read several threads of communications from many types of people. I recall reading at least one thread that was quite combative. It centered upon a martial arts artist/actor? – who was in my opinion speaking truth on many levels but his brash presentation just weakened his words with pointless bragging and arguments. It’s one of the reasons I often don’t waste time posting publicly on such matters. This person appeared to be a martial artists and so I can relate to that “fight” mindset. He isn’t going to whine about what we had lost. I agreed with him that the former incentive program was geared to help draw outsiders to the state for a shoot versus growing Michigan filmmakers from within. When you own a house and have family/friends in Michigan you will get loyalty to our state. Put the power in the hands of outsiders and they will mostly leave to seek the better deal. In many ways they should because wise use of investment money is a must. But scripts do help dictate where something is filmed. Michigan filmmakers tend to create Michigan based films. Write what you know. Yes. Some artists benefitted briefly from what came into the state. Now, I’m not a politician or a corporate accountant and so I can’t say for certain if the incentive program was truly the best use of that money. I know that investing in out-of-state studio owners and such left a big black eye on our business. I’ve stated that many local filmmakers have little to zero business sense. They put all their faith into indiegogo/kickstarter/social give me campaigns. Are these people worthy of actual business investment? Usually not. So maybe out-of-state film business startups were the only good option on the table. I read posts of anger – calling for marches and threats of moving to GA and other states. Some historical business startups had incentives but many had no more than a vision, a plan and a passionate core of people. Many looking for short cuts would be further ahead if they had just taken the long road. So IF you love the state just roll up your sleeves and get to work. Make up your mind to learn to do things properly. Those who threatened to leave if the incentives leave – get going. Once the fist clenching, teeth gnashing is done – get motivated. Let’s take a look at some updates.

The 1st release on my involvement in this film came out last Sunday and it literally went around the world. (Just look up DJ PERRY and C.U.J.O.) Some fanboy writers were upset by the idea of a reboot and others were just excited. I’m looking forward to participating in this film and other Sunn Classic Pictures being discussed. I see a good future of CDI working with Sunn Classic Pictures. I will say having read the script that this is not some low-budget reboot. I’m sure I will have some more official releases concerning this project soon.
I’m going to wrap this up. I’m working on approving a new CDI logo for “40 Nights” and I have some script work to finish this week. I hope many of you can attend showings of BESTSELLER in Lansing, Michigan. I’ve been enjoying watching the 1st season of TRUE DETECTIVES and so I think I need a dose of that. I had two belated B-day parties this weekend for my mom and dad. I got one of my final B-day gifts today which was a rototiller. I also found a few great things for the office. My brother made me a beautiful magnetic dry erase board for meetings. Battle Plans can now be drawn up in style. Soccer is also back in action tomorrow so time to lace up the cleats again. First Watch on 40 NIGHT, BESTSELLER Expands and more…
It is a late night Saturday blog. It will actually post in the wee hours of Sunday but today was full and kept me away from my computer. It has been a good week of film business. Most of the week I worked from early morning until about 2:30 or so before moving to yard work. I had such a wild week full of many emotions as projects moved to different phases.
BESTSELLER coming off the sold out premiere started its run in Grand Rapids. That day leading up to the GR week of showings – had me feeling blissful. I had watched the 1st full cut of “40 Nights” the day prior. I was just stunned as I watched that film play out. It flowed so well and was moving in the performances and camera work. This was only a rough cut without music or sound – and what a great ending! I know what went into the shoot by the hard working cast and crew. It was such a good cut that if polished slightly it would be ready to roll into the next audio phase. We will do a few more test showings to get feedback and make minor tweaks. But I was so at peace because it was powerful to watch – even in this rough stage. I had a few great conversations about the film with people in the circle including our distributor. I’m excited to lock this edit by month’s end.
Back to BESTSELLER –
BESTSELLER playing on the Celebration Cinema screen in 5.1 was cool to watch. Seeing an audience JUMP and GASP in terror was truly a wonderful experience. We had a Q&A after this kick off which was nice to interact with an audience after they watched the film. There were a few aspiring filmmakers in the crowd and their questions are always fun to answer. The night ended with fish tacos and so that is pretty good.
Paperwork was exchanged this past week whereas CDI Distribution brokered TV license deals for OUTSIDE THE WIRE and STANDING POST for Red, White & Blue Non-Profit and also for the TV special – 7 STONES. We will be doing some official announcements but remember you heard it here first.
I’ve been writing everyday – I’m reworking an older script, writing on two others and outlining our next biblical faith drama. I’ve been enjoying this time with coffee and imagination. I look forward to seeing some of these go to the screen.

A PASS –
Recently, I considered being involved in another feature – a comedy but it was just bad timing. I have lots going on in June with writing, promotion, distribution and getting the garden and yard around. I’m also going to be an uncle this month again and our soccer season is in full swing. I will start some heavy developmental film work soon. I have to admit – the break after shooting “40 Nights” has been refreshing. As of today – the garden is now in and I did some clean up to the office porch. Productive day!
We had a rain out on soccer last week and I hope we don’t repeat that again. I’m going to do a few last things tonight before getting some well deserved rest. New Distribution & New Projects – Full Steam Ahead
The cold is creeping into Michigan and our bodies fight to adjust to the biting chill. The cold rain will soon become something else – snow. I’m sipping at the coffee trying to get the sinus pressure to let go of the vice grip on my head. It has been a very busy time for me as I try to wrap up business for the year and manage lots of new business that is emerging for the year ahead. I’ve been doing some heavy training prepping to play my role in December. I’m giving myself that physical edge that one would require to live and survive in a harsh alien world. WASTELAND shoots just before the week of Christmas and I’m looking forward to that change of pace. Let’s take a moment to look at some of the developments this past week. I’m glad many of you survived the ghosts and goblins of Halloween.
ASHES OF EDEN – I think our last festival play is over and I’m happy to be moving on to distribution. We announced our deal with the Winters Film Group to release the film nationally on DVD, VOD, PPV, TV. The distributor in our meeting this week praised the marketing as the buzz is out there. He already had a PPV (Pay Per View) faith company reach out to license the film. This film walks a great edge that will appeal to audiences who enjoy faith and non-faith films. We’ve got several more reviewers watching the film to release ahead of the film. I’ve also been in talks with several foreign territories and we will get this film out to all of you also.
BESTSELLER – This film has been in transition as we prepare to build the music and sound FX. We had a great meeting with much of the post team. We went through the entire film and plotted what and where each of these audio elements would go. We talked about the FX which has already begun. Some amazing work already created and next week we should have the opening credits done. What I love about this film so much ties into my watching of PSYCHO this past Halloween. The film has elements of the classic thrillers of days gone by. A true stylistic edge that will help the film stand apart from the same old, same old that can tend to be the norm. This film has some new team members working on it and so getting these folks up to speed and on the same page workflow wise can be an effort. But you are molding a team for future work. The key is to look at it less as an individual piece by piece and more like a group of runners passing the baton. The key is to be ultra focused as you pass the baton to the next person. The clean up and organizing of files can make it easier for the next runner who has to take the baton. That said, I think we are getting into a groove and communication is going good. That is the key to all of this. In this new age of technology text messages or emails do not or should not replace phone calls or face to face meetings. The baton is passed much smoother between the “runners” and so your run times get better. Communication is the key to good leadership and so if you are a key out there make sure to communicate well. You will become valuable and find much more success.
WASTELAND – Prop building is underway and also some key decisions on equipment. This coming week we are doing a read through with the director and key cast. I’m looking forward to it. A Sci-Fi western is going to be great fun. I’m awaiting some concept art on one of the space craft. Exciting stuff for sure.
DONORS another thriller of ours has an offer forthcoming. WICKED SPRING also has interest to get a Special Edition out this spring and so we will be discussing that this week. We actually have a few distributors taking interest in the CDI library.
Our legal team finally got our domestic rights back on a pair of CDI films that got stuck. Long story but now that we have them back one I can get those film back out to market. I also have wanted to release a collection of the early CDI films together. Now with this deal that is possible.
We also have some possible reboots, sequels, prequels and new films launching. I’m beyond excited about a few of them and once the ink dries we will be discussing. Of course, all of you who follow the blog here will get some early updates.
On the acting front – I was informed that two films I was slated to be in have been green lit and will be moving forward. Both are quite large projects and will be great fun to play. I think I will be back in action with Ray and some of the “Book of Ruth” team in 2015. There are lots of projects closing their deals that will allow them to shoot in 2015. I’m excited to participating in them. 2015 will see the release of several films while we film those that will come to you in 2016. That is the way of the business. Develop. Produce. Post. Release. – Repeat often:)

Tis the Season Wrap Up’s
I’m at home with my loved ones enjoying a snow day while sipping some hot hazelnut coffee and updating all of you. I was supposed to be in Pontiac finishing my last couple days filming on “Dead Quiet” but the snow storm caused a push. It has been a busy week between personal and business endeavors. Let me see if I can recap a few of these – personal and professional…
1) As some now I was passenger in a Thanksgiving day roll-over that resulted in our household getting a new vehicle. The shopping was almost everyday and we did get to test drive in bad snow so that was useful.
2) Some legal wrap ups underway which is an ongoing thing. Our industry is full of people who have to be put into check. I’m sure this is in many industries but our world of film is a web of agreements.
3) Follow up on some of the foreign licensing deals underway or developing

5) I had to disperse $ to some investors which is something I really enjoy doing. We also have domestic money flow starting on one of our other films that came to market a few months back so that is always good.
6) My studio talks are continuing hindered slightly by the approaching holidays and their end-of-year wrap up like everyone else. We are examining business to be done between us and I know 2014 will bring new business dealings.
7) I’m in the last stages of an option to purchase agreement on one of my scripts. In addition to developing some of my scripts for production I do plan to sell a few. I will do this direct and also my agency wants to shop a few. We will see if they can do as well as I do:)
8) The “Faith film” front is looking good and so we hope to get the next project following “Book of Ruth” up and going in 2014. I think we are close but it is always close until money is there.
9) I had to mourn the destruction of my elementary school this week which was sad. A buddy of mine from 3rd grade and I toasted to its passing.
10) I’m giving some advice and speaking to someone who is looking to turn a book into a film. On that same develop level I am doing some reading on another project that could be coming to camera in 2014. More once the deal is signed.
11) I did sign my ‘LOI” on the western film “Rifle” that looks to be on track to film this Spring. It would be my latest star turn in a western since “Ghost Town” and I’m eager to get back in the saddle.
12) I’m looking forward to another childhood buddy coming home for the holidays. I enjoy the time with family and friends.
13) Footage prep on “Bestseller” almost done and editing goes full speed after Christmas.
14) “Ashes of Eden” has some ADR and final music but is on track to be complete this month.
I think my blog has been inspired by my Christmas lists that I’ve been working hard to check off. I’m an impulse shopper and I have limited patience for the process so I try to start in advance. I’ve done good keeping up with wrapping while on business calls. I’m going to sign off and get a few things done today. Stay warm out there and enjoy the spirit of the season. Be good to one another.

Keeping Focus and 2014 Teases
I’m enjoying sipping the coffee on this chilly morning. I slept sound last night after some long moments in the cold yesterday shooting on the film “Dead Quiet”. I got to have some extreme FX make up done with some latex which I’m still peeling off in little pieces. It was nice to see Gabrielle Stone and work again with her. It is hard to believe it was 4 years – oh, how time flies. I also met some real nice cast and crew and I think they will pull off a good film.
It has been a busy week of business as many opportunities that have been worked on for some time have been opening up. It appears that the western that I’ve signed on to star in is moving along and once they do a formal PR announcement I will discuss more. It appears that the faith films in the vein of “Book of Ruth” could be going into production in 2014. Looking at sales reports we should be doing more of these. There appears to be an option against purchase on one of my scripts looking promising. Production and distribution options via a studio could be looming as discussions continue on that front. I’m excited about that because while we are doing some good direct sales with CDI Distribution I would love to focus more on production and less on funding and distribution. Also with budgets climbing into multiple millions having some additional experience of a studio would be welcome.
On the post front, “The Terrorist,” “Ashes of Eden,” “Donors” and “Bestseller” will all be coming out in 2014 and we will find a home for the “Supermodel Showdown” TV show. With 3 shows completed and being shown I think we will narrow down and find a home soon. Also many of the CDI library will also be expanding their audience into the foreign market.
Overall I would say that my plate is full. I’ve had 3 other possible acting projects for 2014 start discussions with me and I’m excited by the possibility of those. I enjoy the occasional “just acting” as it provides a much more relaxed journey. As I’ve mentioned before I also am happy that the state of Michigan has had more feature film production happening. Some of the best advice that I’ve ever had or given was to just do your thing. Do it to the best of your ability. (this means producing especially) Don’t keep looking over your shoulder. By this I mean, don’t concern yourself with what everyone else is doing – focus on what you are doing. I’m so busy with running our business and when I’m not busy with that I’m enjoying family and friends – I don’t keep up with everything everyone else is doing. It is not an arrogance it is a management of time. I have only so much time. I can spend it doing my development, production and distribution duties as well as evaluate acting offers. I’ve got an obligation to give my best. It doesn’t mean that I don’t make errors or fall short – but that is happening with my focus. Imagine if I spent more time stalking people’s work to see what they are doing. I don’t wish for what others have I just build my own and keep moving. Plain and simple – I outwork people. I also try to always give my best. That said, so should you. And between those projects remember to live.
A Great 2013 Ahead – What’s in Motion, Read On!

The Holiday season was a good one and we are wrapping up the last of our festivities this weekend. I’ve already been at some work this past week getting done what I can with most of Hollywood out for another week. That said, we’ve had several good meetings on post work for “Ashes of Eden” and not only has editing started but we are just a week maybe from releasing the 1st teaser! I think the artists will all be excited. I’ve had meetings over CDI commercial division and the development of certain projects. We’ve been getting deliverables around for two of our films going to TV this past week also. I had to strip off and re-load Skype on my Mac so I can be ready for some meetings. Several are over “Darkest Night” and the other Asian-based projects. We have some work underway with S. Korea and others for distribution and development.
“Deadly Renovations” announced some new artwork and that it would be releasing into Denmark, Sweden and other territories in that region. “Donors” released its first trailer and is moving into sound/music phase. We also hinted at one our next collaborations entitled “E & Me” which is a story I wrote and started the script a few years ago. I worked work Charles & Ace from the “Deadly Renovations” project to finish the script. We have a battle plan and so 2013 will see a new film finish (“Donors”) and a new film shot. (“E&Me”)
This week we should be making an official announcement about the upcoming release of “Locked in a Room” domestically in the US/Canadian markets. There has also been some development talk about what project will shoot next with At Risk Entertainment. I know some camera tests have happened and the script is being worked on by Larry Simmons.
“7 Stones” will likely see some more Michigan TV play while we shop it to the world TV networks. I had some early interest and we will see what lies ahead for this little film that packs a big emotional punch! “Realizism” another featurette will release in limited theaters and on DVD in April. “Benjamin” after playing Egypt is now gearing up for a limited theatrical before a wide release. Carlucci Weyant and I have had talks about other potential collaborations and we will see what develops.
“Book of Ruth, Journey of Faith” continues to sell well and we are preparing to launch into pre-production on another pair of biblical era films. Speaking of bible – I’ve been growing the beard and a teaser/trailer for “In Our Time” could be at hand. This powerful script is moving down B4Tyme’s production slate. I’m really looking forward to “Henry Ford” which if things line up will shoot in 2013. Besides my acting involvement CDI is going to handle the “Making of” on these films. Due to the fact that we’re a Michigan company the idea of doing something on Henry Ford is very exciting.
I had the pleasure of going through the holidays without some character screaming to get out of my head. But now that we’re into 2013 and I’ve started to look at a few roles. I’ve been communicating with a few directors out there and so we will see what happens. I’m ready! Write, Act, Develop, Produce, Post, Distribute… All good work and so let’s prepare to story tell once again in 2013!

Marketing, Magic Ruby Slippers and Michigan!
What a good week on many levels for me. I’ll sip some of my favorite coffee and reflect with you all. I decided to accept an offer to do a local Michigan project that is being done in connection with a university. It is a project that gives students experience and exposure to a professional world of filmmaking. I have to say I am deeply concerned on many levels about the future of filmmaking in our state. I ranted enough on the casting situation in Michigan last week, which in many ways is ass backwards. I saw more examples of it this week. For some I don’t think it is a desire to present poorly. It is just our entire environment is not accepting of the next level of film work. It is why in years past people would outgrow this market and be forced to move to another place. With the technology we now possess the country/world is becoming smaller. You have to believe in what you are selling. If an agent doesn’t fully know, understand and process this worth into a proper pitch they revert back to the one size fits all shoe store approach. The talent needs to be realized by the agent as a hand-made unique, special, magical pair of shoes – like ruby slippers or LIKE MIKE’s magic basketball shoes. You would have to sell 10,000 or 100,000 pair of average shoes to even come close to a pair of the above-mentioned special shoes. So if agents can’t get over the shoe store mentality they should at least become the seller of odd, unique, special, one-of-a-kind shoes. I can assure you the +10% will be much higher and you won’t have to do a mountain of paperwork.
The local acting union rep was approached to handle this university film program. When the programs information was brought forth to the rep they pushed the wrong agreement. This agreement had previously been used in years prior but still it was the wrong agreement. If you distribute the film for profit it is this agreement, if not for profit the one proposed would be fine. My question was why would someone push an agreement that puts already struggling actors on a “deferred” type agreement? If this agreement was used in past years whereas they did distribute the film for profit – why was this not adjusted? I can tell you those actors have monies due to them. If nobody brought it to anyone’s attention – Let’s stop there. I heard that the response to the notice of the wrong agreement attempted to be used was “If we get attention – we’ll renegotiate.” This is the person entrusted with the job of fitting the right project with the right agreement? Why would someone push an agreement that doesn’t pay talent up front and has no benefits of health and pension or residuals? There is more work associated with the next contract up, which requires deposits and more paperwork. Why do you think an employee on likely a straight pay would elect to take the easiest course of action. Again the same rep pushing the same agreement when confronted with the info that the wrong agreement was being proposed responded with – “Why not just accept donations for viewings or DVD sales?”. Again the situation calls for an obvious different agreement yet still the wrong one is pushed, why? Also this is in an environment whereas the students are intended to learn the correct process. There is a reputation given to our local acting union and I’ve never spoken badly about them, but I see now where this stems from. This is the office responsible to work on behalf of our local talent. Put that with the one size fits all agent mentality and the casting director’s common view of talent as cattle – It doesn’t make me mad but it does make me sad. I’m not on a witch-hunt. I don’t want anyone’s job or head. I just want people to put in an honest effort and do things right so we can work to eliminate the backwoods reputation that people attach to our state and film industry. I think the project is now non-union because so much time was wasted and wrong information given. Good preventative action always outweighs reactionary fix it actions after the fact.
Now let us bullet point some updates –
– The casting for the next GPI/CDI Philippine feature “The Beast” is underway. We are continuing our distribution discussions over “Darkest Night.” Actresses meeting the requirements should submit!
– I’ve been working on our “Faith” slate with Reel Frog Films and I think we will have an entire slate in production including Dean Teaster’s next feature “Long Road Home” which was requested by financiers this past week.
– “Deadly Renovations” is going up for pre-sale and we will keep feeding you these outlets.
– I’m waiting on final word on another film slate that CDI will operate as the production entity. “Soul Eater” is first on deck and it includes a series of western films.
– Development talks to match the right project with the proper opportunity continue.
– “Benjamin” is working distribution after a great NYC screening.
– At Risk Entertainment and CDI have been evaluating distribution deals for “Locked in a Room” and I think we will have something soon!
– I’m looking at acting offers presented that extend from now to 2013.
– CDI Commercial is working towards a few deals including a great “Making of” deal.
Lastly, I promised a little bit on my next acting role. The film has a working title of “Realizism” but I think I might start calling it “Strippers”. I play a colorful character Manny who I’ve been describing as a rogue with a heart of gold. The drama has a strong comedic edge to go with its serious message. Mitch Nyberg is directing it. It will have me working with some old friends and new ones. I film in a little more than a week and I’m excited to be working with my old friend the camera again!

“Be real and get the deal”
Again I want to take this moment to thank of all you who take the time to read my blog and share it with those who are trying to make their way in this artistic industry of ours. It was one heck of a week and I will try to update folks on some of my adventures. I will say the garden is doing great save the fact our puppy decided to chew the garden hose in half. Today will be a day of getting the yard and garden cleaned up for Father’s day tomorrow. We are having him over and so with the exception of rain possible it should be a good day.
Last night I went to my 1st ever poetry reading. It was to see my girl read with several others in their group to honor their mentor. Mentors are very important in our business and working and getting advice from those who have lasted is so needed. I’ve talked before about some who want their 15 minutes of fame. I see social networking is full of LIKE this and LIKE that and people whose egos ride on a star meter or number of friends. None of this will be as helpful as seeking out those that have been there and done it. To get those gems of wisdom on how they got their foothold and the secrets to longevity. The power of the art will and should outshine the popularity contests at functions and now online. In casting we never look at number of friends or the often corrupt star-meters on IMDB. If you have little to no credits save glorified extra work and no reel to show do not expect to get treated like a star. Many of these massive mutual LIKE groups just come across as desperate computer hackers. Non-working actors who spend more time trying to find an easy path versus the real path of work hard to get the work. Followed by work that begets work. We use the database to show cast/crew lists to distributors but the once great database has lost so much credibility to real producers that it is kind of sad. So I say, focus on the work and the PR buzz comes second. Don’t be in the “Fake it to you make it” club as 99% of those folks will fail in their endeavors. “Be real and get the deal” that is the motto I would replace the previous with.
It was a very inviting reception in Saugatuck, MI for “7 Stones” which I’m very appreciative of. A welcome on the signs with my name was appreciated but a touch odd as I am only one of many great artists on that film. I was not blown away by the projection system but appreciative that it was donated. Also the film still needs some major audio mixing before it is sent to distributors but that is part of the learning curve for the new young company that CDI associated with. Overall I think my co-stars home town enjoyed the drama unfolding on-screen and I am proud of the product.
Early that same day the Philippine horror film “Darkest Night” played for a handful of distributors in Hollywood and more had screeners sent. We will see now where the offers come from but I think it was a success in that the interest is there. What deal is to be made is yet to be seen but I’ve heard that it gave some good exposure to some very talented Philippine actors/crew. I look forward to returning this fall for the launch of the theatrical run and in the Spring to shoot “The Beast”.
One of the best Bday gifts might be the funding of a film slate where I sit as a Production head with CDI there to help execute production. They chose a handful of properties to put on their slate and the first SOUL EATER could get full green light at month’s end. That would see MASON from “The 8th Plague” back in action in a prequel.
Dean Teaster’s next feature “Long Road Home” is also close to launching after a deal was put on the table for distribution. This Faith Drama will be a good next feature for Dean Teaster and I fully expect that to shoot late Summer/Early Fall if schedules allow.
A TV Division has been developing and we will soon be announcing some updates here. A couple of projects are in development and one series has Jeff Kennedy’s name all over it. He and I need to sit down and discuss so until I do I cannot put too much out there. All I can say it that it will be way cool and the path to production is clear.
I’m told we are closer to a start with the “Henry Ford” project as they attach the director. I would say that this directors is relatively well-known and worth the wait:) CDI is handling all the behind the scenes materials and so it will be a good project for me on both sides of the camera. I’m slated to play a major supporting character opposite an A-List talent that many will know. I’m looking forward to throwing down in this powerful drama.
I’ve got 4 directors and 1 producer call lined up for today so even while working about the Bluetooth will get some usage. My plan is to solidify these films so I can move out of the business phase and into what I feel I do best. That is, bring the character to life! I’ve had some communications with folks this week about the SHOW vs the BIZ and how they intertwine with one another. It is a delicate balance but once you get that balance you will see more doors open. I’m going to hop off here and get to my personal and work business. That is another balance that we all must achieve in our lives to be successful.

PILLARS: UNIQUE, PURPOSE, FAITH, COURAGE
A good week of work both professionally and personally and now a long weekend to enjoy. On the personal it was mainly prepping the garden for planting this weekend. Once again it was done by hand and while hard work it does really ground and connect you to the task. I’ve also been reading a 1970’s wine making book I got at a sale for 10 cents and it has been very enlightening. I think a batch of beer might be the next endeavor of that sort. On the professional side many good things are also developing. I will try to give a nice little recap so get your coffee close and take a read.
I did a producers watch on “Darkest Night” and I was extremely happy. If you like the films like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, THE 4th KIND and the “found footage” genre of horror – you will love this film. It is unique and truly frightening. We are having a distributors screening on June 13th at Dick Clark Productions in L.A. and we have several RSVP’s and additional send outs. I think this film could do very well in a wide theater release but with the ongoing struggle we will see what level of attention it gets. Development work on the follow-up film “The Beast” will start heavy following the June 13th showing. Also there is whispers that they might want to fly me back to Manila for the theatrical kick off this fall.
Same day that night in Saugatuck, Michigan the powerful drama “7 Stones” is playing an event. Michigan folks wishing to attend can buy tickets at http://www.3rdcoastfilm.com we have had two previous “in-progress” showings to collect notes and this showing should reflect the finished product. It is one of 5 CDI associated projects coming out now.
Aug. 7th is the domestic release of another CDI associated film “Deadly Renovations” and the early artwork looks good. I’m excited for everyone involved with this project. “Donors” a new associated project with fellow producer Charles P. in Yuma, AZ should have a 1st look trailer very soon. New announcements should be coming on this and other projects in the coming weeks.
July will also be the month we really start targeting other distribution for “Locked in a Room” and I can see some additional theatricals in the near future.
I had meetings this past week with some potential clients for our CDI Commercial Division set up by one of our sales reps Mr. Jeff Watson. I think that division is really about to start exploding so I will be looking for other sales reps to work other markets for us.
I had a good meeting with our in-house attorney on clearing up some of the outstanding matters within CDI. By this I mean collections and it is unfortunate that he has to deal with that side of the coin vs some of the exciting new development people making their way to THE TRIBE!
The hosting site for my actors reel page is going down so I’m looking at a new set up for all that. (Thank you Dennis Therrian for your help here) Technology is evolving and we have to evolve with it. Our technology is so beyond the old computers I grew up on. Communication via email and such has its positives and negatives. I often see where people read into communications meaning that really isn’t there. It is a source problem. Your own mindset can influence what you read. If something is unclear I always like to clarify. It is the whole water being half full or half empty situation. Communication is key. If you don’t or can’t communicate with your circle taking on projects such as filmmaking can become impossible. I’ve had several talks with other producers on management of people on upcoming films. It is truly a thing of beauty when you see a full film crew operating as one whole. Insecurity of being overlooked, lack of respect for others and/or fear of failure can drive people away from the beauty of oneness. Hence the TRIBE. At the core is the elimination of selfish wants and focusing on collective good. I honestly, sincerely and wholeheartedly try to give and bring out the best in people. I think that is hard for people to truly believe because of the world we live in. Our industry can focus in on the negatives if an individual doesn’t embrace their unique nature and have a sense of fate or destiny. One is internal and one is external but both can bring us to a place and time that we were meant to be at. I think almost all my projects have been like that. I don’t lament the projects I don’t get because I wasn’t meant to. I don’t credit random luck to those projects I get either because I believe artists/storytellers are brought together. Call it MUMBO JUMBO or whatever you will but as I’ve written before, we all have a personal mythology. Bottom line is know you are unique and that you do have a purpose. You have to journey to get where you must go and that requires faith and courage.
UNIQUE, PURPOSE, FAITH, COURAGE – is there anything greater within us than these things?
Be an example – have the faith and the courage to be unique and follow your purpose. If you are a storyteller than commit to that and inspire others to do the same.

Week Updates and Going Western (Again)…

It was a long week so I retired early and woke early. I have the coffee flowing and I am happy to send out some updates to the subscribers out there. I’ve been streamlining some CDI company biz in anticipation for some upcoming work. It is funny how the path opens up new adventures simply by walking it.
I got word that “Book of Ruth” will be going to Wal-Mart and other retailers that have yet to carry the title. The film has really done well and in the wake of that we’ve got several other biblical films going up. Three are with Reel Frog and two moving right along are in the CDI stable. It is a growing marketing for us and nothing wrong with entertaining and adding a good message. Watch IMDB and here for some updates very soon.
In the past I’ve been a paid speaker – most recently at Michigan State University as a Key Note Speaker for a creative arts forum. I don’t normally do these events usually because of the plan time and also to schedule around films. Enough people have asked so I have agreed to let MP Talent in Grand Rapids book me into these speaking events. (TO BOOK: malinda@mptalentagency.com) It is a take off on this CLAWING MY WAY TO THE MIDDLE program of mine. It really focuses on bringing a business mentality in with the art. In our industry it is the SHOW+BUSINESS. The focus is NOT – how to act or how to do this or that although those answers can be provided. It is really about getting the straight forward no B.S. advice based on actual trial and error. I attended a film fest mixer in town on Thursday and I really enjoyed seeing some of the younger artists pushing their dreams forward. There are many pitfalls in this business and in life. I know some of this info will greatly help individuals as it already has. So I will be looking forward to sharing.
I think one of the weeks most exciting developments was that I gave interest in playing the legendary cowboy Morgan Earp in a western this fall called “Storm God Rides”. I’m excited that we will likely be filming back on the western set in Mescal Old Tuscan outside Tombstone, AZ. Some of my fellow western actor amigos have also put their materials forward and been cast. I know that my friend and associate Dean Teaster is playing my oldest brother Virgil Earp, so that will be fun. More as this develops but I’ve had fun with the camera tests and I’m ready to ride.
I’m still looking at projects for May and I’ve had a few good projects cross the desk but nothing locked yet. In the meantime I’ve been getting myself ready for soccer, winemaking and getting the garden prepped. It is beautiful here in Michigan and I think it is going to be a great year.

The Way of the Warrior
The last couple weeks have been an uphill march but I’m seeing the lush land beyond. Often we suffer the setbacks of our own expectations. Even more often it is our inability to see the full picture. Also having issues outside our control is another trigger for some people. I do say that if you don’t have ego armor and a constitution of steel Entertainment might not be the business for you. Now I did not say hobby as I know many people with the 9-5 who act at the community theater, dink with filmmaking or play music for fun, but as a full-blown business takes so much more. I’ve also noted that when the march is on and strong folks push to walk shoulder to shoulder with you but if things turn on you many will seek a distance. With this they are only too eager to return again when things look good. It is the character of people that counts. I don’t judge that character in times of bounty but in drought. I always like the idea of George Washington with his soldiers at Valley Forge. No shoes, food, tired, home sick…sounds like a team after a long post-production:) I think much of my success has been built upon failures. You learn from experience and put these new approaches into action. I am a warrior. Some know of my martial arts background which I no longer wear on my sleeve. To me it is a way of life, of thinking or being. I’ve got some seasoned warriors and I’ve got some new enthusiastic warriors that have joined the march. I try to lead by example and I’m happy when I see others take to this example. My path is the way of the business artist not one to being a celebrity. If the work is celebrated by others which it has been, great. Do not seek fame for fame sake would be my advice to many out there. It is a false power given by others and can be taken away as easily as given. The artistic spring a warrior draws from relies not upon anyones granting of fame.
OK. Onto some updates…
– Yesterday and today associates of mine on projects of mutual interest are being discussed and deals made. I’m excited to see how things evolve the next week in the wake of these meetings.
– A theatrical showcase of CDI films may be soon put into play with an Arts Council showing the evolution of films.
– CDI will soon have some announcements about a WEB/TV Division of CDI that will include a few pilot projects.
– “Donor” trailer should be arriving in the near future.
– “Darkest Night” is setting up for a L.A. screening for distributors late May and already we have interested parties coming to the table. Also we are in development on our 2nd associated film with GPI “The Beast”.
– “Deadly Renovations” has officially announced August 7th as our domestic DVD release date. VOD?PPV may be same day or slightly thereafter. Also new foreign sales path under way with a larger sales rep. More soon!
– Development continues on several fronts and we are gaining traction.
– “Locked in a Room” EMBRACE THE MADNESS! A May 3rd screening in Canton, MI is being set up and final editing tweaks are being made. This film from an earlier work cut reminds me if FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, MEMENTO and SAW had a baby:)
Other than all that I’ve been approached about another faith-film and I think I’ve got a few of those in my near future. I’ve been working with Ray (Book of Ruth) and we are close to launching a few new films there as well. Today it is a trip up North for family Bday celebration and just getting ready for a new week ahead. Things could go from ZERO to 60 real fast pending a few of these weekend meetings underway. I’m excited to share more on all that but patience must be had by all.
